The 50 billion tree ambition is a Saudi-led regional restoration effort—not a plan to plant all 50 billion trees in Saudi Arabia. Its announced division is 10 billion trees in Saudi Arabia and 40 billion across the wider Middle East. The goal includes planting or regenerating trees and restoring degraded land, and its latest reported figures distinguish targets from work already reported as complete.
Why the 50 billion figure is regional
Saudi Arabia announced the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) in March 2021. The SGI sets the domestic ambition: 10 billion trees in Saudi Arabia. The additional 40 billion is intended for the wider region, bringing the combined MGI ambition to 50 billion. Saudi Arabia’s official explanation describes this as a goal to restore 200 million hectares over coming decades. Saudi Green Initiative announcement

| Saudi Green Initiative | Saudi Arabia | 10 billion trees; the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture says this is equivalent to rehabilitating 40 million hectares. |
| Middle East Green Initiative | Saudi Arabia and the wider region | 50 billion trees to be planted or regenerated, equivalent to restoring 200 million hectares over the initiative’s lifetime. |

What the initiative means by restoration
The MGI’s charter, adopted at a ministerial meeting on 26 October 2022 and endorsed by leaders in November 2022, describes a broader agenda than counting newly planted trees. Its goal is to plant or regenerate 50 billion trees and restore 200 million hectares over the initiative’s lifetime. The charter identifies land degradation, ecosystem restoration and protection of vegetation cover as central concerns, including forests, rangelands and agricultural areas. What progress has been reported—and what the figures mean
Regional targets reviewed in July 2026
On 22 July 2026, the MGI Executive Committee reviewed member-country targets totaling 35.4 billion trees and 99.4 million hectares of degraded land. The MGI said its Secretariat was developing a five-year strategy and roadmap. Those figures describe the national targets reviewed for the regional effort; they do not show that those trees have been planted or that the land has already been restored. Saudi Arabia’s reported domestic work
Separately, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture reported on 27 March 2026 that the country had restored one million hectares of degraded land and planted more than 159 million trees under the Saudi Green Initiative. The ministry places these figures against the domestic goal of 10 billion trees, equivalent to rehabilitating 40 million hectares. These are ministry-reported results for Saudi Arabia, not a progress total for all MGI member countries. Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, 27 March 2026

In the same ministry milestone report, UNCCD Executive Secretary Dr. Yasmine Fouad said: “This achievement proves that land restoration is possible even in the most challenging environments.” The comment refers to Saudi Arabia’s reported restoration of one million hectares; it is not an independent assessment of tree survival or the full regional initiative.

Do the planting totals show how many trees survived?
No survival-rate figure or independent long-term ecological assessment is established in the official sources cited here. A reported number of trees planted is not the same as a count of mature, surviving trees, and a target is not evidence that planting or restoration has been completed. Assessing lasting impact would require outcome information such as survival over time and evidence of ecological change; the reported totals alone do not provide it.

How to read the headline ambition
- 50 billion is the combined regional ambition, not Saudi Arabia’s domestic target.
- 10 billion is Saudi Arabia’s stated domestic goal; 40 billion is the wider-region contribution described in the initiative’s announcement.
- The charter says “planting or regenerating” and frames the goal alongside land and ecosystem restoration.
- The regional figures reviewed in July 2026 are member-country targets; Saudi Arabia’s reported figures are domestic progress claims. Neither should be mistaken for an independently verified count of surviving trees.
