That depends on how the nodes are assigned, which datastore and network components are in use, and what workloads and failure scenarios have actually been exercised.
This tour keeps those distinctions clear. The specific hardware, K3s release, node roles, and tests in this homelab are not established here, so they should not be mistaken for a verified inventory or first-hand test report.

What does “three-node K3s” mean?
In K3s, a server runs k3s server and manages control-plane services and the datastore. An agent runs k3s agent and joins the cluster without those components. Both roles run kubelet, the container runtime, and the container networking interface (CNI). The K3s architecture documentation explains the distinction.

- One server and two agents: applications can run across three machines, but the control plane depends on the single server.
- Three servers with embedded etcd: all three participate in the control plane and datastore, creating the documented embedded-etcd high-availability arrangement.
- Another server/datastore design: an external datastore or a different role distribution changes the architecture and its failure behavior.
Without the actual node roles and datastore, “three-node” is a machine count—not a reliable description of control-plane resilience.
Does a three-node cluster provide high availability?
Not automatically. A single K3s server with two agents adds worker capacity, but losing that server leaves the cluster without its control plane. K3s documents embedded-etcd high availability as requiring at least three server nodes; optional agents can be added for application workloads. See the embedded-etcd HA guide.
Embedded etcd relies on quorum: a majority of members must be available. K3s recommends an odd number of server nodes because adding one to an odd-sized group does not increase the number of failures it can tolerate before quorum is lost. This is a control-plane design property, not a guarantee that applications remain available through every failure. Application replicas, storage behavior, networking, and recovery procedures also matter.

For a homelab tour to support an HA claim, identify the server count and datastore, then describe the failure scenario actually tested and what remained operational. Do not infer observed failover from the topology alone.
How do I set up a three-node K3s homelab?
First decide whether the goal is a simple cluster for workloads or a multi-server control plane. K3s says a single-server installation is a fully functional cluster, with datastore, control plane, kubelet, and container runtime. Its quick-start guide shows agents joining through a K3s URL and token, and points users who need multiple servers to the HA documentation.
- Choose the topology: decide which machines will run
k3s serverand which will runk3s agent. For embedded-etcd HA, plan for at least three server nodes. - Choose the datastore and networking: select the supported datastore arrangement and CNI, then confirm that the required node-to-node and agent-to-server traffic is permitted.
- Install and join nodes: follow the current K3s quick-start instructions for the chosen topology. The documented installer configures its service to restart after reboot or process failure and places a kubeconfig at
/etc/rancher/k3s/k3s.yaml; these are documented defaults, not proof that every installation uses them. - Record the resulting configuration: note the K3s version, node roles, datastore, CNI, storage provisioner, and which packaged services remain enabled. These details are essential for interpreting any later test.
Do not publish join tokens, kubeconfig credentials, or exposed management endpoints as part of a homelab walkthrough.

What hardware and storage does K3s need?
The K3s requirements page lists minimums of 2 CPU cores and 2 GB RAM for a server, and 1 CPU core and 512 MB RAM for an agent. The page does not state a publication year for those figures. They are baselines, not comfortable sizing guarantees: workloads consume additional CPU, memory, and disk, and actual needs depend on what runs in the cluster.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Disk performance can affect datastore and cluster performance. K3s recommends SSDs; for Raspberry Pi and other ARM devices, it recommends an external SSD because etcd is write-intensive. The same documentation warns that embedded etcd may have performance issues on slower disks, including Raspberry Pi SD cards. That guidance does not establish which hardware or storage this homelab uses.
To make a hardware tour useful, give each node’s model, CPU, memory, operating system, and storage device, then distinguish installed capacity from resources left available to workloads. If the cluster uses persistent volumes, describe the storage implementation and its limits rather than treating the presence of a storage provisioner as evidence of production-grade durability.

Which network ports and components matter?
Network requirements depend on datastore, CNI, and enabled features. K3s documents TCP 6443 between agents and servers for supervisor/API traffic. Flannel VXLAN requires UDP 8472 between nodes, while embedded-etcd HA requires TCP 2379 and 2380 between servers. K3s warns not to expose the VXLAN port to the world. Consult the requirements documentation for the topology in use.
K3s lists packaged components such as containerd, Flannel, CoreDNS, Traefik ingress, ServiceLB, network policy support, local-path-provisioner, and Spegel distributed registry mirror in its overview. A particular cluster’s configuration may retain, disable, or replace components, so a tour should state what is actually enabled instead of implying every default is present.
Describe network boundaries at a useful level—such as VLAN and firewall policy, permitted management access, and whether services are reachable remotely—without revealing secrets or inviting access to the control plane.

What production patterns can a homelab test?
A small cluster can help rehearse operational workflows, but the value of a test depends on the configuration and evidence. A description should name the pattern, the setup, the action taken, and the observed result. Examples include deployment rollouts, ingress behavior, persistent-volume workflows, backup and restore, upgrades, and recovery after a node or service failure. The available facts here do not establish that any of these tests were performed in this homelab.
Keep the scope of a result precise. A successful rollout on a small cluster demonstrates that workflow under those conditions; it does not by itself establish production capacity, resilience, or recovery objectives. Likewise, a three-server etcd topology is relevant to control-plane HA, but application availability still depends on workload replicas, storage, and networking.
What should a useful homelab tour disclose?
For readers to reproduce the architecture or judge what its tests mean, a concrete tour should identify:
Quick Recap
- Each node’s model, CPU, RAM, operating system, and storage.
- The K3s version and whether each machine is a server or agent.
- The datastore, CNI, and network boundaries.
- Which packaged components are retained, disabled, or replaced—and why.
- The workloads and production-like workflows exercised, including the actual results and limitations observed.
- How cluster access, credentials, backups, and recovery are handled without disclosing secrets.
