Pearl Abyss Europe CEO Lybee Park says critics had limited time with a pre-launch build of Crimson Desert and may not have seen enough of its optional world details. That is her explanation for the game’s reception—not established proof that the review window caused lower scores. Critics judged the version they received, and Pearl Abyss set the review period.
What Lybee Park said about the reviews
In an interview published by The Game Business on October 8, 2026, Park said critics played a build that was not the exact launch version and had limited time to review it. She argued that reviewers often follow the main story, while details she considers central to the game’s appeal are spread throughout its world.

“I am not sure critics had the fair chance to explore those during the review period,” Park said. The Game Business interview also records her description of the review build and the time available. VGC reported the remarks on October 9, noting that the interview question referred to a 77 Metacritic critic score and Park’s view that reviewers did not get the optimal experience.

Park’s account describes what she believes reviewers may have missed; it does not demonstrate that a longer review period or a different build would have produced higher scores. The scores assess the game reviewers were given access to, and the review schedule was set by Pearl Abyss.

GamesRadar+ writer Austin Wood makes that counterpoint while allowing that more time might let reviewers experience a game more fully. Wood does not wholly accept Park’s explanation. Review windows vary, and neither source establishes a general rule that a longer window leads to a higher score.
VGC’s account also notes that the game received post-launch patches and updates, including changes related to difficulty, storage, and graphics. Pearl Abyss’s current Crimson Desert site describes an Enhanced edition, additional language support, post-launch updates, and a free upgrade for current owners. Those changes mean a review of an earlier build may not describe every element of the current game, but they do not settle why the original reviews scored it as they did.

How to read the critic and player scores
Score figures are snapshots, not a fixed, synchronized comparison. The Game Business cited a 77 Metacritic critic score in its October 8, 2026 interview article. Metacritic’s page, accessed October 9, displayed an 8.8 user score from 13,492 ratings and listed 115 critic reviews. GamesRadar reported an 8.7 user score on October 9. Those user-score figures differ by source and snapshot; they should not be combined into an undated critic-versus-player comparison.

A difference between aggregates alone cannot show that the review window caused a difference in opinion.

What the game is, and what changed after launch
Pearl Abyss announced Crimson Desert’s worldwide release on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally. The company describes it as an open-world action-adventure centered on exploration, combat, and traversal. Its launch announcement lists those platforms.
Park’s argument is specifically about exploration: she says small details distributed across the world contribute to the game’s “unique charm,” and that a main-story-focused review may not capture them. That is a useful way to understand her position, but it remains her assessment of the game and of reviewers’ experience—not a finding about what all critics did or how players respond.

What readers can conclude
- Park says reviewers had limited time and a build that differed from the launch version, and she believes they may not have explored enough of the world.
- That is an attributed explanation, not evidence that the review window explains the score gap.
- Review aggregates vary with platform, date, and rating sample; the cited critic and user figures are not one synchronized comparison.
- Post-launch updates and the current Enhanced edition mean the game has changed since its initial review period.
