Orkut has not relaunched. As of October 9, 2026, its founder, Orkut Büyükkökten, is asking people to support a proposed new social network through the official Orkut website. The site’s form is a show of support—not an account registration, username reservation, or place in line.
Is Orkut back?
No. The original Orkut service ended in 2014, and the current campaign does not provide a usable replacement. The official site presents a vision for a new network and invites people to add their names in support. A report by Diario de Pernambuco on October 8, 2026, said people could not create accounts, access communities, or use the old network’s features, and that no launch date or feature set had been confirmed. The official Orkut site likewise describes a proposed network rather than announcing that the former service has returned. Diario de Pernambuco

It lets visitors add their names in support and share a supporter card. The official site expressly says signing does not reserve a username, an account, or a place in line. It is not a preorder or product registration. Orkut

What does Orkut’s founder want to build?
In his letter on the official site, Büyükkökten says he wants an internet centered on real people, human connection, and belonging, rather than platforms optimized primarily for attention. He says former users often tell him they miss Orkut’s communities—groups formed around shared interests and everyday experiences. His contrast is: “In a feed you’re an audience, in a community you’re a member.” Orkut Büyükkökten’s letter
He also describes AI as potentially helpful when it supports friendship, while warning that bots, synthetic content, and uncertainty over who is real can undermine trust. These are the founder’s views and ambitions, not confirmed features or demonstrated outcomes of a new service. He closes the letter: “An algorithm can’t make life worth living. But a friend can. A community can.” Orkut Büyükkökten’s letter

What happened to the original Orkut?
Google announced on June 30, 2014, that Orkut would close on September 30, 2014. Google stopped new account creation when it announced the shutdown. Existing users could export profile information, community messages, and photos through Google Takeout until September 2016; Google said an archive of public communities would remain online. The current official biography gives two historical scale figures: more than 300 million users worldwide and, at its peak, over 50% of Google’s page views. The page does not date either figure, so they should not be read as independently verified or tied to a particular year. Orkut’s biography

What is still unknown about a possible return?
The sources available as of October 9, 2026, do not establish a launch date, final feature set, account availability, migration of data from the original service, or business model. The founder’s letter expresses a direction, but does not specify how a future product would handle:
- Community creation and moderation
- Identity and authenticity safeguards
- Privacy and recommendation or feed design
- Data migration from the old Orkut
- Funding or monetization
Those details matter more than nostalgia alone: until the service and its policies are announced, there is no basis for judging how closely it might resemble the original or whether its stated goals will shape the product.
