il_registro is a self-hostable electronic school register project for Italian public education, built around a Go backend and a Vue-based web app. Its creator, Fabrizio, describes the web application as a working beta and the Android and iOS apps as alpha. The project’s feature, testing and compliance claims come from Fabrizio’s account; they have not been independently verified.
What il_registro is—and why its creator built it
In a DEV Community article published September 10, 2026, Fabrizio presents il_registro as an electronic school register intended for Italy’s public-education context. He identifies himself as a computer science teacher at a public high school and says his experience prompted him to build an alternative that schools could host themselves.

Fabrizio argues that proprietary registers can bring recurring costs, vendor lock-in and limited transparency. Those are his stated concerns, not independently established findings about the Italian market. His article also says electronic registers are legally required in Italy, but does not substantiate that claim with legislation or government guidance. Schools should verify applicable legal obligations with qualified sources rather than rely on the project account.
Fabrizio summarizes the civic motivation with the line, “Public education deserves public infrastructure.” It is a statement from his article, not an independently sourced endorsement.

- Personalized educational plans and communications with parents.
- Digital-signing workflows and timestamping.
- National identity integration, MIM/SIDI exports and notifications.
- Accessibility tools and synchronization with Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams.

How the Go and Vue architecture fits together
Fabrizio describes the project as a monorepo with a Go REST API backed by PostgreSQL and Redis, and WebSockets for real-time communication. The backend uses Gin, JWT authentication, TOTP multi-factor authentication, and a handler/service/repository organization. The article also references PostgreSQL 16+ partial indexes and includes a sample repository method, but does not link those descriptions to an independently reviewed codebase.

The web application uses Vue 3 and Quasar, with Pinia for state management. Fabrizio describes it as a progressive web app and cites keyboard-oriented grade entry, local drafts for lesson logs and undo notifications as usability features. He says he chose Go for deployment simplicity and concurrency, and Vue/Quasar for an approachable frontend and PWA behavior. These are his design reasons, not results from a controlled comparison of frameworks.

Native mobile clients are described as Kotlin with Jetpack Compose for Android and Swift with SwiftUI for iOS. They are less mature than the web application, according to the author.
Accessibility and compliance claims need independent evidence
The article reports text-to-speech, speech-to-text, reading-ruler and focus tools, and synchronization of accessibility preferences. It refers to WCAG 2.2 AA and AgID, but provides no independent accessibility audit or test results. A feature list alone cannot establish conformance; schools assessing the software would need evidence such as an audit and testing with people who use assistive technology.

- Weekly lesson planning pages for up to 45 weeks for 7 classes.
- Space for your seating charts.
- Attendance and grades pages for the entire 180-day school year for 7 classes, with up to 35 students per class.
- Extra pages for notes.
- Acid-free archival-quality paper takes pen or pencil.
Similarly, a mention of digital signatures, timestamps, identity integration or ministry exports does not by itself demonstrate that a system satisfies legal or operational requirements. Those claims call for separate technical and legal review.
What the reported status and test numbers mean
Fabrizio calls the web application a working beta and describes it as feature-complete. He labels the Android and iOS applications alpha and says they are not yet feature-complete relative to the web app. These are the project’s status labels in the article; they should not be read as evidence that a school can safely deploy the system for live records.

The same article reports “over 950 frontend unit tests” and “100% Go package coverage.” These are author-reported metrics, not independently reproduced measurements. Test counts and coverage can help describe a development process, but do not on their own establish correctness, security, accessibility or readiness for school operations.
Self-hosting is a possibility, not a deployment plan
The project is described as self-hostable, but the article does not specify production hardware or hosting requirements, deployment procedures, backup and recovery arrangements, support commitments, or an operational security model. A school evaluating self-hosting would need answers on those matters, as well as responsibility for updates, access control, incident response and data portability. The article alone does not establish that those needs are covered.
What the license does—and does not establish
Fabrizio says il_registro uses PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 and characterizes it as allowing public entities to use and modify the software while restricting commercial repackaging. That summary is not a substitute for the license terms. Anyone considering use, modification or redistribution should read the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 and seek qualified legal guidance where the intended use is unclear.
How to assess the project as a school
For a school, the central question is not simply whether the stack is open source or self-hostable. It is whether the system can meet the institution’s operational and legal needs, with evidence. Useful areas to check include:
- Release maturity: Confirm which functions are available in the current web beta and what remains incomplete in the mobile apps.
- Security and continuity: Request details on security review, updates, backups, recovery, authentication and incident handling.
- Accessibility: Look for independent audit results and practical testing, not only a list of accessibility features.
- Interoperability: Validate required exports and integrations against the school’s actual workflows.
- Support and ownership: Establish who maintains the deployment, responds to failures and handles data migration.
- Legal fit: Have qualified advisers assess both the applicable school requirements and the license for the intended use.
Those checks apply to any school-register system. Fabrizio’s article offers a view into one project’s goals and implementation choices; it does not supply the independent evidence needed to settle these questions.
