Download Kdenlive from its official download page, then choose the package for your operating system. Kdenlive is free software. Windows offers an installer or a standalone build; macOS offers an installer; and the project officially maintains AppImage and Flatpak packages for Linux.
Choose the right Kdenlive download
The Kdenlive manual directs users to the download page for the current release for their operating system. Releases arrive about every three months, so check the live page for the current version and available files rather than relying on a version number in an older guide. Previous releases are available in the project’s attic. The project’s installation documentation explains the supported package types and requirements.

Install Kdenlive on Windows
The official Windows downloads include an installer and a standalone version. Kdenlive requires 64-bit Windows 10 version 1809 or later. The manual does not guarantee that it will work on Windows Server or embedded Windows editions.
- Open the official download page and select the Windows download.
- Choose the installer or standalone package, then download the file offered for your system.
- If you chose the installer, open it and follow its prompts. For the standalone package, follow any launch instructions supplied with the download.
Install Kdenlive on macOS
Kdenlive currently provides an installer for macOS. The project documentation distinguishes Intel Macs from Apple Silicon Macs: its Mac-specific guidance lists macOS 12 Monterey or newer for Intel, and notes that builds are available for M-series Apple Silicon. The general minimum-requirements list says macOS 13 Ventura or newer for Apple Silicon. Because those stated minimums differ, confirm the build and OS requirement shown on the live download page for your Mac before installing.

- Visit the official download page and select macOS.
- Check that the offered build matches your Mac’s processor and that your macOS version meets the stated requirement.
- Download and open the installer, then follow its prompts.
Install Kdenlive on Linux
The Kdenlive team officially maintains AppImage and Flatpak packages for Linux. PPA support ended starting with Kdenlive 24.02, so a PPA should not be presented as a currently project-maintained installation route. The project reaffirmed AppImage and Flatpak as its supported Linux packages in its June 6, 2026 release announcement.
AppImage
- Download the AppImage from the official download page.
- Make the file executable using your desktop’s file permissions interface or your distribution’s file manager.
- Launch the executable AppImage.
Flatpak
- Use the official download page to reach the Flatpak option.
- Install it through the Flatpak workflow available on your Linux system, following the prompts shown there.
Linux distributions may offer other routes, but those are distinct from the AppImage and Flatpak packages maintained by the Kdenlive team.

Check your computer against Kdenlive’s minimum guidance
The project’s minimum-requirements guidance scales CPU and RAM recommendations with the video resolution. These figures are stated minimums, not benchmark results or a promise of smooth playback.

The manual also calls for a compatible, working OpenGL 2.0 GPU. On Windows, a graphics card with compatible DirectX 9 or 11 drivers can also be used. The manual says editing relies heavily on CPU power; if your CPU or RAM is near the lower end, it points to Preview Resolution, Proxy, and Timeline Preview Rendering features to reduce the workload during editing.

If the download or installation does not match your system
- The file will not launch: Confirm that you selected the package for your operating system. On Linux, ensure an AppImage is executable before launching it.
- Your Mac is not supported by the listed requirement: Check whether it is Intel or Apple Silicon, then compare its macOS version with the requirement for that architecture on the download page.
- You are following an older Linux installation guide: Use the project-maintained AppImage or Flatpak route; PPA support ended starting with Kdenlive 24.02.
- Your system meets the minimums but playback struggles: Minimum requirements do not guarantee smooth performance. Try the manual’s Preview Resolution, Proxy, or Timeline Preview Rendering features.
