Industrial Village is built around two linked activities rather than a single magic or exploration objective. Immersive Engineering supplies the industrial side: multiblock machinery, power generation, cables, processing and factory-style automation. MineColonies supplies the settlement side: you plan a colony, place buildings, assign citizens and expand the infrastructure needed to support it. The progression is intended to feel guided, beginning with basic tools and ending with complex machines and a more self-sufficient colony.
The project page reported 566,286 downloads and listed December 16, 2025 as its latest update. Those figures are time-specific project metadata, not a guarantee that the pack has the same release or download total when you read this guide.

Check these requirements before installing
Have the correct Minecraft purchase and edition
You need Minecraft Java Edition on a PC. The product commonly sold as Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC includes Java, but launch the Java profile in the official launcher before trying to install a modpack. A Bedrock-only installation cannot load Forge mods.
Choose one launcher and keep its profile intact
Use a launcher that supports CurseForge profiles. A profile is more than a list of downloadable mods: it carries the loader, configuration files and mod versions required for the pack. CurseForge documentation warns that mods are not interchangeable across every loader and Minecraft version, so do not copy individual files from a different 1.20 release or a Fabric instance into this profile.

- For solo play, only the client profile is needed.
- For a local group, one computer can run the dedicated server while players on the same network use matching client profiles.
- For players outside your home, the server computer must be reachable through your router and operating-system firewall, or you can use a managed Minecraft host.
- Everyone should agree on one pack release before anyone starts a long-term colony. Updating one client early can make it incompatible with the existing server.
Install the client profile
- Install or open a launcher with CurseForge profile support.
- Search the launcher’s Minecraft modpack catalog for Industrial Village.
- Select the profile whose game version is 1.20.1 and whose loader is Forge. Do not select a similarly named profile built for another version.
- Let the launcher install the complete profile, including its mods and configuration files. Avoid manually replacing files unless the pack’s release notes specifically tell you to do so.
- Start the profile once with no extra mods or shader packs. The first launch may take longer while Forge creates directories and the pack builds caches.
- From the title screen, create a test world and confirm that the expected industrial and colony content loads. Exit normally so the launcher can finish writing configuration files.
Why a clean first launch matters
Adding performance mods, shaders or personal configuration changes before the first successful launch makes diagnosis difficult. A clean run establishes that Java, Forge, the pack files and the launcher profile work together. Make a copy of the working instance before experimenting, especially if several people will share a server.
Using another launcher
General Modrinth documentation identifies the Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, MultiMC and ATLauncher as client-side options for modded Minecraft. They can be useful if you already manage instances there, but the Industrial Village profile and its canonical release files remain authoritative. Do not assume that a launcher’s generic import function has selected the correct Forge build or transferred the pack’s configurations; verify the resulting instance before joining a shared world.

Install the dedicated server pack
The dedicated archive listed for the current release is IV-1.20.1-Serverpack-1.12. Extract it into a new, dedicated folder rather than into your client’s .minecraft directory. Keeping server and client files separate makes backups, updates and permission management safer.
1. Install Java 17
The published server instructions require Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20 servers. Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the server computer. If Java is installed in its default location, the supplied scripts may find it automatically. If it is installed elsewhere, edit the script or its configuration so it points to the correct Java executable. A newer or older Java runtime can produce startup failures even when the modpack files are correct.
2. Read and accept the EULA
- Open the extracted server folder after the first attempted launch, or locate the generated
eula.txt. - Read the Minecraft EULA.
- If you accept it, change the line
eula=falsetoeula=trueand save the file.
The server will not complete normal startup while the file remains set to false. Acceptance is a legal choice for the server owner; do not treat the edit as a technical bypass.
3. Review server.properties
Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and review the settings before inviting anyone. At minimum, confirm the world name, difficulty, game mode, access controls and the network port you intend to expose. Change only what you understand, and keep a copy of the original file so you can recover from an accidental syntax change. Every player should join using the address and port represented by the server’s final settings.

4. Set optional Java arguments
The pack includes user_jvm_args.txt for custom Java arguments. Use it for memory or diagnostic options only when you know why an argument is needed. Do not paste client-launcher arguments into the server script without checking their purpose. If the server exits immediately after an argument change, remove the last change and test again.
5. Start the server
- On Windows, run
run.bat. - On Unix-like systems such as Linux or macOS, run
run.sh. If the shell reports a permission problem, grant execute permission to the script or invoke it through the shell according to your operating system’s normal procedure. - Keep the server process open and watch the console for a completed startup message before connecting a client.
Run the server from its own folder so generated worlds, logs and configuration files stay with the pack. Stop it through the server console rather than forcibly closing the window whenever possible; an orderly stop reduces the chance of a damaged world save.

Let friends connect
Players on the same network
For a home or office LAN, give players the server computer’s local network address and the port configured in server.properties. Ensure the operating-system firewall permits Java or the server process to accept connections. Test with one client before distributing the address to the entire group.
Players outside the network
Remote players need a route from the internet to the server computer. Configure port forwarding on the router for the port specified by the server, direct it to the server computer’s local address, and allow the same traffic through the computer’s firewall. Because home internet addresses can change, tell players the current public address or use a stable address service that you control. Never publish administrative credentials or expose unrelated router services just to make the Minecraft port reachable.

Connection checklist
- The server console has finished starting and is still running.
- The joining player is using the exact Industrial Village profile, not a vanilla or differently modified instance.
- The client and server use the same Minecraft version, Forge loader, pack release and compatible configuration files.
- The address supplied to the player is the reachable address for that player’s location: local address on a LAN, public address for an external connection.
- The forwarded port, firewall rule and
server.propertiesport agree.
Self-hosting versus a managed host
Both approaches can run the pack. The practical choice depends less on the mod list than on who will maintain Java, files, networking and backups.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted computer | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Install Java, extract the archive, accept the EULA, edit settings and start the scripts. | Usually a control panel provisions the server and can install a server pack for you. |
| File and JVM control | Direct access to server.properties, user_jvm_args.txt, logs and world files. |
Control depends on the provider’s panel and file manager; advanced arguments may be limited. |
| Updates | You download and apply the correct server-pack release, then coordinate client updates. | Some services offer automated pack installation or updates, but you still need to verify release compatibility and keep backups. |
| Network access | You handle port forwarding, firewall rules and changing home addresses. | The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, so no home-router forwarding is required. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but you supply hardware, electricity and your own maintenance. | A recurring hosting charge applies; the amount depends on the provider and selected resources and is not established here. |
Choose self-hosting when you want complete control over files and are comfortable maintaining a Java process and network. Choose a managed service when the group values a control panel, a public endpoint and less manual infrastructure work. In either case, the pack’s own release files and compatibility requirements remain the authority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep clients and server synchronized
Most modded-server failures are version mismatches rather than mysterious hardware problems. Establish a simple release policy:
- Nominate one person to approve pack updates.
- Record the exact pack release and server archive used by the group.
- Back up the world and configuration files before changing anything.
- Update the server in a separate test copy first when the world matters.
- Distribute the same client profile release to every player only after the server has been verified.
Do not “fix” a mismatch by deleting random mods from a client or copying a server-only file into the client. The profile’s configuration and mod set are designed as a unit. If you have customized settings, document those changes so they can be reproduced after an update.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The server window closes immediately
- Confirm that Java 17 is installed and that the script is pointing to that executable.
- Run the script from the server folder so its relative paths resolve correctly.
- Check whether
eula.txtstill containseula=false. - Undo the most recent edit to
user_jvm_args.txtand try again. - Read the newest log for the first error rather than the final cascade of messages.
The launcher reports a missing or incompatible mod
- Verify the profile’s Minecraft version and Forge loader.
- Reinstall or repair the complete Industrial Village profile instead of adding a replacement mod downloaded for another version.
- Remove manually added mods and test the unmodified profile.
- Compare the client’s pack release with the server archive name and the release date you selected.
A player is kicked during connection
- Compare the client and server mod lists and configurations.
- Make sure the player is using Java Edition and the intended launcher profile.
- Check the server console at the moment of the kick; it often identifies a registry, configuration or loader mismatch.
- Restore the player’s instance from the known-good profile copy if local experiments changed files.
Friends cannot reach the server from outside
- Test locally first. If local players cannot join, solve the server or firewall problem before testing the internet path.
- Confirm that port forwarding targets the server computer’s current local address.
- Check the router and operating-system firewall rules for the exact port in
server.properties. - Verify that the public address has not changed and that the internet provider does not block inbound connections.
- If the network cannot accept inbound traffic, move the server to a managed host rather than weakening unrelated security controls.
The colony or world behaves differently after an update
Stop the server, restore the pre-update backup and test the new release on a copy of the world. Do not repeatedly load the only copy while changing mod versions. A rollback is much easier when the world folder, configuration directory and server archive have been preserved together.
Backups and routine maintenance
What to back up
- The entire world directory, including player and colony data.
server.properties,user_jvm_args.txt, EULA state and any access-control files you intentionally changed.- The exact server-pack archive or a record of its release identifier.
- Any scripts or notes containing custom Java paths and launch arguments.
When to back up
- Before every pack, mod or configuration update.
- Before changing Java arguments or network settings.
- After a successful maintenance window, so you have a known-good restore point.
- On a schedule appropriate to how often the colony changes; a busy shared world needs more frequent copies than an occasional test world.
Keep at least one backup outside the live server folder. A backup that shares the same disk and is overwritten by the same failure is not a reliable recovery plan.
How to decide whether Industrial Village fits your group
This pack is a good match if your group wants a directed technical progression with a visible settlement to build and manage. It is less suitable for players who want a lightweight vanilla-plus experience or who do not want to maintain a Forge profile. The central loop asks you to coordinate resources, machines, power and citizen needs, so agree in advance who will handle server maintenance and who will organize the colony.
Start with a clean client profile and a test server world, confirm that one player can connect, and only then invest in a permanent colony. That sequence separates installation problems from gameplay decisions and gives you a safe point from which to add optional client customizations.
