Use Steam’s “Conan Exiles Legacy” branch for the UE4 client, and run multiplayer on a private, self-hosted, or rented UE4 server. Before changing branches or updating a server, stop it and copy its database files. The critical rule is one-way migration: UE4 data can be read by UE5, but a character or database converted to UE5 cannot be returned to UE4.

What “Legacy UE4” means after Conan Exiles Enhanced
Funcom kept the Unreal Engine 4 build available as Conan Exiles Legacy. It is a separate client branch selected through Steam’s game-version menu, not a setting inside the normal Enhanced installation. The Legacy client is the route for players who need the pre-Enhanced UE4 environment.

The official PC-server situation is different. Funcom’s official PC servers moved to UE5 with the Enhanced launch. Legacy multiplayer therefore requires a private server, a self-hosted dedicated server, or a rental service that still offers a UE4-compatible server. Single-player and co-op remain options as well.
Your client and server must use the same version. A Legacy client cannot reliably join a UE5 server, and a UE5 client cannot be used as the client for a UE4 server.

Make a Legacy-preservation plan before you change anything
Do this planning while the current server is still intact. The safest sequence is to decide where you will play, identify the characters and maps you need, and then create offline backups before selecting a different branch.
- Choose the destination: private dedicated, self-hosted dedicated, rented UE4 server, or single-player/co-op.
- Confirm the server build: ask the host or check your dedicated-server installation so it matches the Legacy client version.
- List characters and maps: note whether each character is on Exiled Lands, Isle of Siptah, an official server, or a private server.
- Check transfer limits: destination type, modded content, and transfer cooldowns can affect eligibility.
- Stop the server before copying files: a live database may be changing while you copy it.
- Store more than one backup: keep a copy outside the server machine, such as on an external SSD, and do not rely on the only copy inside the game directory.
Switch the Steam client to Conan Exiles Legacy
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Conan Exiles Enhanced and choose Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas.
- In the version selector, choose Conan Exiles Legacy.
- Let Steam finish the branch download or update before launching the game.
- Start the Legacy client only after the server you intend to join has also been kept on, or restored to, UE4.
The branch selection changes the game files used by that Steam installation. It does not convert a UE5 database back into UE4, so make your server backup first.

Preserve the original filenames and keep the copies in a separate location. An external SSD is useful because it gives you a backup that is not dependent on the server’s internal drive. Make a new backup before every branch change, server update, or database replacement.

If you overwrite them with a database that has already been opened and updated by UE5, the migration boundary has been crossed and the data cannot be returned to Legacy.
Understand the one-way UE4-to-UE5 database boundary
Funcom’s migration guidance is explicit: UE4 databases are readable by UE5, but the reverse is not true. In practical terms, opening or converting a Legacy world in UE5 may make that database usable in Enhanced while eliminating the ability to restore it as a UE4 world.

- Unsafe direction: a UE5-updated database cannot be taken back to UE4.

game.dband, where applicable,dlc_siptah.dbbefore any UE5 launch or server update.
Do not use the same live database folder as an experiment. If you need to test Enhanced, use a separate copy and leave the preserved Legacy backup offline.
Choose the right Legacy multiplayer arrangement

The important distinction is not the server’s ownership but its build. A private server that silently updates to UE5 is no longer a Legacy server, even if its name, settings, and world appear unchanged.

Plan character transfers before an official-server shutdown
Official PC characters needed to be removed before the official-server UE5 conversion to remain in Legacy. If you still have a character on an official service that you want to preserve, do not wait for the conversion event: arrange the destination and transfer while the character is still eligible.
Transfers are not universal imports. Eligibility depends on the source server, the destination server, modded content, and any active cooldown. A character that can leave one server may not be accepted by the destination you selected.

Take screenshots or written notes of the character, source, destination, and transfer status before shutdown. This does not replace the game’s transfer rules, but it gives you a record when diagnosing a failed or unavailable transfer.
Handle Isle of Siptah separately
Isle of Siptah has stricter Legacy-preservation requirements than Exiled Lands. Enhanced does not provide a separate Isle of Siptah private-server/database path equivalent to the old arrangement, and bases and structures do not transfer in the same way.
If preserving Legacy progress is the priority, move characters to an Exiled Lands UE4 server first, before making a version change. Back up dlc_siptah.db as well as game.db; keeping only the main database leaves the Siptah world without its corresponding data.

What does and does not carry between maps and server types
Map, server, and character migration are separate decisions. A character transfer does not guarantee that a base, thralls, storage, or other structures will appear at the destination. The Siptah-to-Legacy route is particularly constrained, which is why moving the character to an Exiled Lands UE4 server before shutdown is the safer preservation plan.

- World database: preserved by backing up the correct UE4 database files.
- Structures: do not assume they follow a transferred character, especially from Isle of Siptah.
- Server mode: a single-player/co-op character cannot be imported to a dedicated server.
A safe update and recovery routine
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Copy
game.db; copydlc_siptah.dbtoo if the server uses Isle of Siptah. - Record the backup date, map, server build, and whether the files are known to be UE4.
- Store one copy on separate media and leave it untouched.
- Update or change only the working installation.
- Confirm the client branch and server branch match before anyone connects.
- If the update produces unwanted UE5 conversion or corruption, stop the server rather than continuing to play.
- Restore the untouched UE4 database copies to the server’s
Saveddirectory, then start the matching UE4 server and test with the Legacy client.
Restoration can recover the last preserved state, not progress made after that backup. Keep dated generations instead of replacing one backup forever.
Troubleshoot the common Legacy failures
The Legacy client cannot see or join the server
Check the version on both sides first. Funcom’s rule is that the client version must match the server version. If the server updated to UE5 while Steam is using Legacy, roll the server back to its preserved UE4 installation or use a different UE4 server.
The server starts, but the old world is missing
Stop the server and verify that the intended UE4 game.db is in the exact ConanSandboxSaved folder used by that installation. For Siptah, verify dlc_siptah.db as well. Check the backup date before replacing any working file.
A character transfer option is unavailable
Review the source and destination server types, modded content, and cooldown status. A single-player or co-op character cannot be imported to a dedicated server, and a destination may reject a source that is otherwise transferable elsewhere.
Siptah buildings are not present after moving
That is a map-transfer limitation, not necessarily database corruption. Siptah structures do not transfer in the same way as a character. Preserve the Siptah database and, if Legacy continuity matters, move the character to an Exiled Lands UE4 destination before the conversion boundary.
The world was opened in Enhanced by mistake
Stop using that working copy. Restore the untouched UE4 database backup rather than trying to downgrade the converted files. If no pre-UE5 backup exists, the converted data cannot be returned to UE4 according to Funcom’s migration guidance.
Legacy-server checklist
- Steam is set to Conan Exiles Legacy.
- The server is private, self-hosted, or rented—not an official PC server.
- Client and server versions match.
game.dbis backed up while the server is stopped.dlc_siptah.dbis also backed up for Isle of Siptah.- An untouched UE4 copy is stored on separate media.
- Characters are moved before any official-server conversion or shutdown deadline.
- Transfer source, destination, mods, and cooldown are confirmed.
- No UE5-updated database is copied over the preserved UE4 backup.
Dates that matter for the transition
Funcom described the official-PC transition as an event around the May 4 official-server shutdown and the May 5 Enhanced launch. Those dates mark the operational change to UE5; they are not a recurring maintenance schedule. If you are preserving a Legacy world now, rely on your own dated backups and the current server provider’s stated branch support rather than assuming an old official-server deadline can be reversed.
