A GitLab 502 on a self-hosted VPS means the front-end gateway (normally NGINX) could not obtain a usable response from GitLab Workhorse or the Puma/Rails application behind it. If you have just rebooted the VPS or restarted GitLab, wait for startup first: GitLab says a single-core server can take up to a minute to bring Puma and Sidekiq back, and the instance returns 502 until Puma is ready. If the error persists, check service state, restart only the failed component, then investigate the NGINX → Workhorse → Puma path. A registry-only 502 follows a separate upstream and IPv4/IPv6 troubleshooting path.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Start with the smallest safe check
Before changing configuration, establish which request is failing and whether the failure began during maintenance. A 502 that appears immediately after a reboot can be a normal part of GitLab coming back online; a 502 that remains after services report healthy requires diagnosis.

- Recently rebooted or restarted GitLab: allow the documented startup interval. On a single-core server, GitLab says Puma and Sidekiq may take up to one minute to restart, and the site returns 502 until Puma is available.
- Main web UI, Git over HTTP, and API all fail: begin with the managed service status and the NGINX/Workhorse/Puma request path.
- Only the container registry fails: do not assume the Rails web stack is broken. Inspect the registry upstream and its address family (IPv4 versus IPv6).
- An external NGINX or Apache proxy is in front: check its account permissions, Workhorse target, and trusted-proxy configuration in addition to GitLab’s own services.
Do not treat a 502 as proof of data loss or as evidence of one universal GitLab defect. The status identifies a gateway-to-upstream failure; the affected service, installation layout, proxy topology, and logs determine the cause.
Understand the request path that produces a 502
In a Linux-package installation, a normal web request travels through several managed components:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- NGINX accepts the client connection.
- NGINX proxies the request to GitLab Workhorse.
- Workhorse handles the HTTP exchange with GitLab’s Puma/Rails application.
- Puma serves the Rails response, which returns through Workhorse and NGINX to the client.
GitLab describes Workhorse as a smart reverse proxy intended for resource-intensive and long-running requests. It intercepts every HTTP request to or from GitLab Rails. Consequently, the browser can show the same 502 page when NGINX is unhealthy, when Workhorse cannot reach Puma, when Puma is still starting, or when an external proxy cannot read its configured upstream. The visible status is therefore a symptom at the gateway boundary, not a component diagnosis.
Use the path to choose where to look: a failed NGINX service points to the front door; a running NGINX with a failed Workhorse or Puma points farther downstream; an external proxy with permission errors points to the hand-off between that proxy and Workhorse.
Step 1: Confirm scope and allow a normal restart to finish
Identify exactly what is returning 502
Test or observe each relevant surface separately:
- the main GitLab web interface;
- Git operations over HTTP;
- API requests;
- the container registry, including image push and pull requests.
If the first three fail together, investigate the shared web path. If the web interface works while registry requests fail, jump to the registry-only branch below. Recording the scope prevents a registry configuration problem from leading you to restart unrelated Rails services.
Distinguish startup from a persistent outage
When the VPS has just booted or GitLab has just been restarted, wait through the documented interval before editing files. GitLab explicitly states that the instance gives a 502 until Puma is up again. The “up to a minute” qualification applies to a single-core server and is not a guaranteed repair time for every VPS; larger installations, resource pressure, or a stuck service can take a different amount of time.
Step 2: Check the managed service state
Run the package status command
For a Linux-package installation, run:
sudo gitlab-ctl status
The command reports the state of GitLab-managed services. GitLab’s examples include NGINX, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, and Puma; the package also manages Workhorse and other components. Look for a service marked down, repeatedly restarting, or not completing its start transition. A status result that shows only some services healthy is more useful than the 502 page itself because it narrows the failing layer.

Interpret status without guessing
- NGINX is down: the front-end listener cannot reliably proxy requests. Restart NGINX alone first.
- Puma is down or still starting: Workhorse has no Rails application ready to answer; allow startup if maintenance was recent, then investigate if it remains down.
- Workhorse is down: NGINX may be unable to connect to the expected Workhorse socket or listener.
- PostgreSQL or Redis is unhealthy: application startup or request handling can remain incomplete even when NGINX itself is running.
- Sidekiq is restarting: this may accompany a post-reboot delay; it is one reason GitLab documents waiting for the stack to settle before assuming the 502 is permanent.
Status is a point-in-time view. Run it again after every restart or after the startup interval so that you are not acting on an obsolete state.
Step 3: Restart only what is failing
Restart NGINX when the front end is the problem
If status and the surrounding evidence point to the bundled NGINX service, restart that component rather than interrupting every GitLab service:
sudo gitlab-ctl restart nginx
After it completes, check the state again:
sudo gitlab-ctl status
This has a smaller blast radius than a full stack restart: application workers, database, Redis, and background jobs are not deliberately restarted just because the front-end proxy needed to be reloaded.
Use a full restart when several managed services are affected
When multiple components are down or the service relationship is unclear, restart the managed stack:
sudo gitlab-ctl restart
Then run sudo gitlab-ctl status again and allow the startup interval before judging the result. A full restart creates more interruption and can recreate the temporary 502 while Puma and Sidekiq return, so it should not be the first response to an isolated NGINX failure.

Reserve kill for a stuck service
GitLab notes that a stuck component may require gitlab-ctl kill <service> before restarting it. This is a last-resort action, not a routine fix: identify the service, understand the impact of terminating it, and use the command only when a normal restart cannot clear the stuck state. Follow with a status check and the narrowest applicable restart.
| Situation | First action | Interruption scope | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only bundled NGINX appears unhealthy | sudo gitlab-ctl restart nginx |
Front-end proxy only | NGINX is running and the 502 clears |
| Several managed services are down or startup is incomplete | sudo gitlab-ctl restart |
Whole GitLab-managed stack | Wait for Puma/Sidekiq, then rerun status |
| A named service will not stop or restart | Use gitlab-ctl kill <service> only as a last resort |
The selected service is forcibly terminated | Restart that service and confirm its state |
Step 4: Correlate NGINX, Workhorse, and Puma
If a restart does not remove the 502, follow the request path instead of repeating the same command. Correlate the state and available logs for NGINX, Workhorse, and Puma at the time of a failed request. The goal is to determine whether the connection fails before Workhorse, between Workhorse and Puma, or inside Rails.
NGINX-to-Workhorse failure
When NGINX is running but cannot connect to the Workhorse endpoint, the gateway has no usable upstream. This commonly appears after a proxy configuration change, a changed socket location, or a Workhorse service that did not start. Verify that the endpoint NGINX is configured to use matches the active Workhorse socket or TCP listener and that the service is actually listening.
Workhorse-to-Puma failure
Workhorse can be available while Puma is still booting or has stopped. In that case, NGINX reaches Workhorse, but Workhorse cannot obtain a Rails response. Compare Puma’s status with the time of the 502 and allow the documented startup interval after maintenance. If Puma remains down, the status and corresponding service logs are the evidence needed to investigate further; a generic “restart everything” cycle will not identify why it failed.

Puma and Sidekiq depend on the broader GitLab service environment. A failed PostgreSQL or Redis service can prevent normal application operation even when the proxy processes are up. Include those services in the status and log correlation rather than assuming every 502 is an NGINX fault.

Step 5: Repair an external NGINX or Apache proxy
The bundled Linux-package NGINX is not the only possible front end. If it is disabled and an external NGINX or Apache instance handles public traffic, that web server must be able to reach Workhorse and must be trusted correctly by GitLab.
Check the external web-server account and group access
GitLab requires the external web-server user to be configured and given access through the gitlab-www group when the bundled NGINX is disabled. A permission error while the external server reads the upstream is a strong indication that the account cannot access the Workhorse UNIX socket or related path. Correct the account and group arrangement, then apply the GitLab configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMatch the upstream transport
NGINX can proxy to a UNIX socket when permissions allow it. Apache cannot connect to a UNIX socket in the same way, so GitLab documents configuring a Workhorse TCP listener for Apache deployments. Ensure the external proxy points to the actual TCP address and port configured for Workhorse, not to an unavailable socket. Conversely, do not replace a working socket target with an arbitrary port; the address must be the one generated and enabled by your GitLab configuration.
Set trusted-proxy options deliberately
External proxies also require trusted-proxy settings so GitLab can correctly interpret forwarded connection information. Incorrect trust configuration can make a proxy topology appear broken even though the services are running. Keep the trust boundary limited to the proxy addresses you actually control.
Apply edits with reconfigure
After changing /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb, apply the settings with:
Best Value
sudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure
Use GitLab’s generated proxy configuration as the reference for the expected upstream, permissions, and listener settings. Then retest the exact URL that returned 502 and rerun sudo gitlab-ctl status. Reconfigure is the step that turns the file edit into generated service configuration; editing the file alone does not complete the change.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 6: Follow the registry-only troubleshooting branch
When the main GitLab UI, Git-over-HTTP traffic, and API work but container registry requests return 502, focus on the registry’s NGINX configuration and upstream. The registry is a distinct request path, so restarting Puma or Rails is unlikely to correct a registry listener or address mismatch.
Check localhost address-family resolution
GitLab documents a failure in which localhost resolves to IPv6 address ::1 while the registry expects IPv4. In that documented scenario, set the registry HTTP address explicitly to IPv4 in /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb:
registry['registry_http_addr'] = "127.0.0.1:5000"
Apply the change:
sudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure
Retest a registry request after the generated configuration has been applied. The explicit address fixes the localhost-to-IPv6 mismatch described by GitLab; it is not a universal registry remedy.
Separate a registry GCS push problem
GitLab also documents a separate registry deployment issue involving Google Cloud Storage pushes and HTTP/2. For that specific scenario, GitLab gives GODEBUG=http2client=0 as a workaround. Treat it as a targeted registry deployment setting, not as a general solution for a web UI 502 or for every failed image push.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Observed result | Upstream to inspect | Configuration focus |
|---|---|---|
| Main UI and API return 502 | NGINX → Workhorse → Puma | Managed service state, startup completion, sockets/listeners |
| Main UI works; registry returns 502 | Registry NGINX upstream and registry listener | IPv4/IPv6 binding, registry address, registry-specific errors |
| Registry push to GCS fails in the documented HTTP/2 scenario | Registry storage client | GODEBUG=http2client=0 workaround for that deployment |
Use evidence instead of universal “502 fixes”
There is no official percentage that assigns most GitLab 502 responses to one cause, no guaranteed repair time for every VPS, and no single command that repairs every installation. The same browser status can result from a normal Puma startup delay, a failed managed service, an inaccessible Workhorse socket, an incorrectly configured external proxy, or a registry-only address-family problem.
A disciplined sequence avoids making the outage worse:
- Record which endpoints fail and whether maintenance just occurred.
- Wait through the documented startup interval when the timing fits a restart.
- Run
sudo gitlab-ctl statusand identify the first unhealthy component. - Restart that component only, using
sudo gitlab-ctl restart nginxfor an NGINX-specific issue. - Use
sudo gitlab-ctl restartonly when the broader stack is affected or the narrow restart cannot restore service. - Correlate NGINX, Workhorse, Puma, PostgreSQL, and Redis state and logs when the 502 persists.
- For an external proxy, verify user permissions,
gitlab-wwwaccess, trusted-proxy settings, and the exact socket or TCP target, then runsudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure. - For a registry-only failure, inspect registry configuration and apply only the address or HTTP/2 workaround that matches the observed failure.
What a successful recovery looks like
Recovery is more than seeing one page load. Confirm that the component implicated by status is running, the previously failing request path now returns normally, and unrelated functions remain available. For a general web 502, verify the main UI and at least one affected API or Git-over-HTTP operation. For a registry issue, verify the registry operation that failed rather than inferring success from the web UI. If the error returns after another reboot or restart, preserve the timing and service-status evidence; recurring startup failures point to a component or topology problem that a one-time restart merely masks.
