Choose a dedicated aerospace-and-defense ETF only when you have a specific defense, military-aerospace, security or government-space thesis and can accept greater concentration and policy risk. The distinction is not absolute: broad industrial funds may already hold a large allocation to aerospace and defense. State Street’s Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI), for example, reported 24.18% in aerospace and defense on October 15, 2026.
Fees, index rules and existing holdings can change the better choice. The comparison below uses the dated figures available for representative funds and explains how to check the latest fact sheet and prospectus before trading.

What each ETF category actually owns
Broad industrial ETFs
Industrial-sector ETFs group companies whose businesses are dominated by capital goods, commercial services and supplies, or transportation services. That definition spans manufacturers, infrastructure suppliers, logistics companies, airlines, railroads and other service providers rather than one single theme.
XLI illustrates the breadth. Its allocation on October 15, 2026 was 24.18% aerospace and defense, 20.08% machinery, 14.74% electrical equipment and 10.24% ground transportation. The balance was distributed among building products, commercial services, trading companies, logistics, construction, conglomerates and airlines. A fund with that mix can provide a diversified industrial-sector satellite position, but it is not a defense-pure investment.

Vanguard Industrials ETF (VIS) is another broad-sector example. Vanguard described its mandate as industrial-sector exposure and reported a 0.09% expense ratio as of December 19, 2025. Sector definitions and constituent weights differ by index provider, so two industrial ETFs will not have identical holdings.
Aerospace-and-defense ETFs
Dedicated funds narrow the investable universe to companies tied to aerospace and defense activities. The Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF (PPA) prospectus says its index covers companies involved in U.S. defense, military, national or homeland security and government space operations. The stated scope includes aircraft, naval vessels, armored vehicles, drones, missiles, command-and-control systems, intelligence, space systems and cybersecurity or artificial-intelligence efforts.
That narrower mandate can make the fund a more direct expression of a defense or aerospace view, but it also reduces diversification across unrelated industrial businesses. PPA had 61 underlying-index constituents on June 30, 2026, follows an 80% aerospace-and-defense investment policy and is classified as non-diversified. Non-diversified status permits a larger percentage of assets in fewer issuers than a diversified fund, which can amplify both gains and losses.
Category comparison at a glance
| Attribute | Broad industrial ETF | Dedicated aerospace-and-defense ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Primary exposure | Machinery, electrical equipment, transportation, commercial services, supplies and aerospace/defense | Aerospace, defense, military systems, security and related government-space businesses |
| Diversification | Several industrial subsectors; breadth depends on the index | Fewer industries and often fewer issuers; concentration is intentional |
| Defense purity | Partial and variable; XLI reported 24.18% aerospace and defense on 2026-10-15 | High relative exposure; ITA’s cited presentation showed 99.8% aerospace-and-defense sub-industry exposure on 2025-12-31 |
| Representative fee | XLI gross expense ratio 0.08%; VIS expense ratio 0.09% as of 2025-12-19 | ITA 0.38%; XAR 0.35% total annual operating expenses; PPA’s current fee should be checked in its latest prospectus |
| Typical portfolio role | Core or satellite sector allocation for broad industrial exposure | Targeted thematic or policy view on defense and aerospace |
| Main extra risk | Still cyclical and capable of losing principal; may not match a pure defense thesis | Issuer, contract, budget, regulation and geopolitical concentration |
These are category characteristics, not guarantees. An ETF can lose principal, and past performance does not predict future results.
How diversified are the representative funds?
XLI: broad exposure with meaningful defense overlap
XLI’s largest reported positions on October 15, 2026 were Caterpillar at 6.33%, GE at 6.06%, RTX at 4.72%, GE Vernova at 4.62%, Union Pacific at 3.21%, Deere at 3.06%, Eaton at 2.93%, Boeing at 2.79%, Uber at 2.73% and Parker-Hannifin at 2.27%.
The list shows why the broad-versus-targeted distinction matters. RTX and Boeing provide recognizable aerospace-and-defense exposure, while Caterpillar, Union Pacific, Deere, Eaton, Uber and other holdings connect the fund to construction, rail, farm equipment, electrical systems and transportation. A buyer seeking industrial growth may welcome that mix; an investor seeking only defense contractors may regard the non-defense holdings as dilution.
ITA: concentrated market-cap construction
iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA) began on May 1, 2006. BlackRock’s cited presentation reported $12.8 billion in assets under management, 38 holdings, a 0.38% expense ratio and quarterly rebalancing as of the stated 2025 materials. The same presentation showed 99.8% aerospace-and-defense sub-industry exposure on December 31, 2025.

ITA uses float-adjusted market-capitalization weighting and limits any single stock to 22.5%. Larger companies therefore receive larger weights until the cap or index rules intervene. This design can give efficient exposure to industry leaders, but it can also leave the fund’s results heavily influenced by a small group of large contractors and manufacturers.
PPA: modified market-cap weighting and non-diversified status
PPA tracks a modified market-capitalization index. Its prospectus describes the fund as an index fund seeking to track the investment results of its underlying index, which is composed of companies involved with the development, manufacture, operation and support of U.S. defense, military, national or homeland security and government space operations.
The index had 61 constituents as of June 30, 2026. PPA’s policy requires at least 80% of assets in aerospace-and-defense companies or securities with economic characteristics tied to that sector. The fund is non-diversified, and its latest fiscal-year filing reported 14% portfolio turnover. The 80% policy leaves room for other investments, but it does not make the fund a broad industrial portfolio.
XAR: sampled exposure with higher turnover
SPDR S&P Aerospace & Defense ETF (XAR) seeks investment results that, before fees and expenses, generally correspond to the total return performance of an index derived from the aerospace-and-defense segment of a U.S. total-market composite index. Its SEC summary prospectus dated October 31, 2025 reported 0.35% total annual operating expenses and 35% portfolio turnover.

Sampling can help track an index efficiently, but the fund’s holdings and tracking behavior may differ from a full-replication portfolio. The 35% turnover figure is a reminder that index changes, rebalances and corporate actions can create trading activity and taxable distributions.
Overlap: the check many investors skip
Buying a dedicated aerospace-and-defense ETF does not automatically diversify a portfolio that already owns an industrial ETF. XLI’s reported 24.18% aerospace-and-defense allocation demonstrates how much overlap can exist before adding a targeted fund.
Review the current holdings of every relevant ETF and compare them with individual stocks in the portfolio. GE Aerospace, RTX, Boeing and other defense-related names can appear directly in a dedicated fund and indirectly through a broad industrial fund. Overlap is not inherently bad; it becomes a problem when the combined position is larger than intended or when several funds respond to the same contract, budget or supply-chain event.

A practical overlap calculation
- Download the latest holdings file for each ETF from its issuer.
- Group securities that represent the same economic exposure, including parent companies and closely related share classes.
- Multiply each holding’s ETF weight by the percentage of the portfolio invested in that ETF.
- Add the resulting weights for each company or theme.
- Compare the total with the maximum position you are willing to tolerate in one issuer or subsector.
Because weights move with market prices and index rebalances, repeat this review after major portfolio changes and at least when an issuer publishes a new holdings file.

Market-cap weighting
Float-adjusted market-cap weighting, used by ITA, assigns more weight to companies with larger publicly tradable market values. It is transparent and generally inexpensive to maintain, but it can concentrate the fund in the industry’s largest winners. A 22.5% single-stock cap limits the maximum, yet a few large positions can still dominate returns.
Modified market-cap weighting
PPA’s modified market-cap approach starts with company size but applies additional index constraints. The exact caps, screens and rebalancing mechanics are defined in the current methodology and prospectus. Investors should read those documents rather than assume that “modified” means equal-weighted or broadly diversified.
Sampling
XAR uses sampling to seek the index’s return without necessarily owning every constituent in index weights. This can reduce implementation costs, but it introduces the possibility that portfolio characteristics, sector weights and tracking difference will not match a full-replication portfolio exactly.
Rebalancing and turnover
ITA rebalances quarterly according to the cited fund materials. PPA reported 14% turnover in its latest fiscal year, while XAR reported 35% in the October 31, 2025 summary prospectus. Turnover is not a forecast of future trading or tax cost, but it helps explain why two funds following similar themes can have different distributions and tracking results.

Fees, spreads and the cost of holding the exposure
The expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and is only one part of the investor’s cost. The representative figures show a substantial category gap: XLI’s gross expense ratio was 0.08%, VIS reported 0.09% as of December 19, 2025, ITA reported 0.38%, and XAR reported 0.35% total annual operating expenses in its October 31, 2025 prospectus.
On a hypothetical $10,000 balance, a 0.08% annual expense ratio equates to about $8 before compounding and changes in asset value; 0.38% equates to about $38. Those dollar amounts are illustrations of the percentages, not predictions of the account’s actual deduction. PPA’s current expense ratio was not stated in the cited figures, so use its latest prospectus rather than infer it from the other funds.

Trading costs also matter. A fund with a wider bid-ask spread can cost more to enter or exit than its expense ratio suggests, particularly during market stress or outside regular trading hours. Use a limit order when appropriate, avoid trading on a thinly traded session, and check the spread and average daily volume before placing a large order.

Industrial-cycle risk
Broad industrial funds are exposed to economic activity, capital spending, freight volumes, construction, commodity prices, interest rates and manufacturing cycles. Their diversification across subsectors can soften a downturn in one industry, but it cannot eliminate sector-wide losses.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Defense-budget and contract risk
Aerospace-and-defense funds add sensitivity to government budgets, procurement schedules, election outcomes, export controls, contract awards, cost overruns and geopolitical developments. A favorable headline may not translate into revenue immediately: contracts can be delayed, renegotiated or canceled, and programs can face production constraints.
Concentration risk
Targeted funds can hold fewer companies or place larger weights in the largest contractors. PPA’s non-diversified classification makes this risk explicit. Concentration can improve the impact of a successful thesis, but it also increases the effect of an earnings miss, litigation, program failure or regulatory decision involving one holding.
Tracking and implementation risk
Index funds may lag their benchmarks because of fees, transaction costs, sampling, corporate actions, cash balances and withholding taxes. A lower expense ratio does not guarantee better tracking, and a higher ratio does not guarantee superior returns.
Which fund type fits common portfolio goals?
You want one industrial-sector allocation
A broad industrial ETF is usually the closer match when the objective is exposure to machinery, transportation, electrical equipment and industrial services together. Compare the fund’s sector breakdown and top holdings, not just its name, because aerospace-and-defense weights can be substantial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou have a specific defense or government-space thesis
A dedicated aerospace-and-defense ETF is more precise when the thesis concerns military procurement, national security, defense technology, aerospace platforms or government space operations. Accept that precision comes with narrower diversification, policy sensitivity and typically higher fees.
Best Value
You already own several industrial stocks
First calculate overlap. A broad ETF may reduce single-stock risk while preserving exposure to the same companies you already own, or it may unintentionally increase it. A targeted ETF can be an even larger concentration if the portfolio already contains major contractors.
You prioritize low ongoing cost
Start with the lowest-cost fund that still provides the required exposure and acceptable tracking. The cited broad funds had expense ratios near 0.08% to 0.09%, compared with 0.35% to 0.38% for two dedicated examples. Fees should be weighed alongside diversification, liquidity, spread and tax consequences.
A step-by-step selection process
- Write the exposure you actually want. Choose among broad industrials, defense contractors, commercial aerospace, space systems or a combination. Avoid using “industrial” as a substitute for a defense thesis.
- Set a portfolio limit. Decide the maximum percentage for the sector or theme and the maximum exposure to any one issuer before looking at recent performance.
- Compare the index methodology. Record whether each fund uses float-adjusted market cap, modified market cap, equal weighting or sampling; note single-stock caps and rebalance frequency.
- Check dated holdings. Review the latest sector allocation, top-10 weights, number of holdings and any non-diversified designation. Use the date on the fact sheet because these values move.
- Calculate total cost. Include the expense ratio, bid-ask spread, brokerage commission if applicable, expected turnover and potential tax impact.
- Test overlap. Add the ETF’s look-through weights to individual stocks and other funds that own the same companies.
- Read the risk disclosures. Look specifically for concentration, government-contract dependence, foreign exposure, small-company exposure and tracking-error language.
- Choose an implementation rule. Decide whether to invest at once, phase purchases, rebalance on a schedule or cap the position until the thesis is reviewed.
- Verify before trading. Confirm the latest prospectus, expense ratio, holdings and index methodology on the issuer’s website because the figures cited here are tied to specific dates.
Illustrative portfolio decisions
Case 1: diversified industrial participation
An investor wants exposure to factory automation, heavy equipment, electrical infrastructure, rail and logistics, with some aerospace exposure but no single-company bet. A broad industrial ETF aligns with that objective. The investor should still examine whether a 24.18% aerospace-and-defense allocation, such as XLI’s reported figure, is acceptable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Case 2: a defined defense-spending thesis
An investor expects sustained military procurement and wants a vehicle focused on defense and aerospace rather than railroads or farm equipment. A dedicated fund is the more direct instrument. The investor must choose between concentration and construction differences: ITA’s float-adjusted market-cap approach with a 22.5% single-stock cap, PPA’s modified market-cap index and non-diversified status, or XAR’s sampled index exposure and reported 35% turnover.
Case 3: an existing position in major contractors
An investor already owns RTX, Boeing and other defense-related stocks and is considering an aerospace ETF. The first task is not picking the fund; it is measuring the combined exposure. A broad industrial ETF may add less incremental defense concentration than a dedicated fund, but it may also introduce industries the investor does not want.
What the published figures do—and do not—show
The dated expense ratios, holdings and allocations establish how the representative funds were positioned at those times. They do not establish a permanent ranking or an apples-to-apples performance winner. The funds use different benchmarks, methodologies, rebalance schedules and exposure definitions, so a single long-term return comparison would be misleading without matching periods and assumptions.
Use the figures as a framework for due diligence, then replace them with the latest issuer fact sheet and prospectus. Sector weights, assets, holdings, fees and turnover can all change.
