A normal tap on + still works when you need albums, search, Markup, or other attachment types. The long-press is a faster but less discoverable route to your recent pictures.

The quickest way to attach a photo in iMessage
The shortcut is a single deliberate gesture rather than a single tap: press and hold the + icon immediately to the left of the message text field. Keep holding until the photo picker appears, then select the images you want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Messages and enter the conversation.
- Locate the + button beside the typing field.
- Touch and hold + instead of tapping it once.
- When your recent photos appear, tap each image you want to include. Selected images show a selection indicator.
- Add a message or make any available edits.
- Tap Send.
This is the practical workaround described for iOS 17 and later by iMore, MacRumors, and a 2026 Tom’s Guide tips feature. It takes you straight to recent images instead of making you tap +, then Photos.

Why the extra menu appeared in iOS 17
In iOS 16, Messages displayed separate Camera and Photos buttons in the app row beneath the composer. iOS 17 replaced those dedicated buttons with one + control that opens a vertical list of attachment options. The visible, standard route therefore became two stages: tap +, then tap Photos.
The long-press does not remove the menu or change your Messages settings. It is a shortcut layered on top of the redesigned interface. A regular tap continues to open the list, while a touch-and-hold jumps directly to recent photos.
Long-press versus the regular Photos workflow
Choose the gesture when speed matters and your target is probably among your latest pictures. Use the menu when you need to browse deliberately or attach something other than a photo.

| Method | Speed | Discoverability | What it exposes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Touch and hold + | Fastest path to recent images; skips the attachment list | Hidden until you know the gesture | Recent-photo picker | Sending one or several pictures taken or saved recently |
| Tap +, then Photos | One extra tap | Visible and easy to learn | Full Photos attachment flow, including browsing and search | When you want to see the available options before choosing |
| Apple’s documented workflow | Several deliberate steps | Fully labeled | Recent items, search, albums, selection, editing, and Markup | Finding older images or annotating before sending |
Apple’s current iPhone User Guide documents the menu-based workflow, not the long-press gesture. That distinction matters if you are troubleshooting: the shortcut is a reported iOS behavior, while the labeled menu is Apple’s documented fallback.

Use the standard picker when you need albums, search, or Markup
The normal route gives you more control and is preferable when the image is not in your recent items or needs annotation.
- In a Messages conversation, tap + beside the text field.
- Tap Photos in the vertical list.
- Swipe up in the picker to browse or search your library, or open an album.
- Tap one or more images.
- Use the available editing tools or Markup if you need to crop, draw, add text, or otherwise annotate before sending.
- Tap Done after editing or selecting.
- Tap Send.
Multiple images can be selected before you send them. The long-press route is therefore a shortcut to the starting point, not a one-photo-only mode.
How to select and prepare several photos
Selecting more than one image
After the recent-photo picker opens, tap each picture you want. Look for the selection marker on every chosen image before continuing. If you accidentally include an image, tap it again to remove the selection.
For older pictures, albums, or a specific date, use the regular + then Photos route. Its search and album controls are easier to use than trying to locate an old image in a recents view.

Editing before sending
When the picker offers editing, complete those changes before you confirm. Apple’s documented workflow also supports Markup, which is useful for circling a detail, adding an arrow, or writing a short note directly on the image. Tap Done when the image looks right, then send it from the composer.
Adding context without leaving Messages
You can type an explanation in the message field before tapping Send. This is useful when several images could be confused with one another; send them together with a short description rather than relying on their order alone.
If holding the plus button does nothing
The shortcut depends on recognizing a touch-and-hold. Work through these checks before assuming the feature is unavailable.
- Hold the exact control: press directly on the + immediately left of the text field, not on the field itself or an empty part of the composer.
- Do not release immediately: a quick tap opens the vertical attachment list by design. Keep your finger down until the picker changes.
- Use the visible fallback: tap +, then choose Photos. This is the documented route and should remain available even when the gesture is unfamiliar.
- Check the software context: the shortcut has been reported for iOS 17 and is still described in a 2026 iPhone tips article. Earlier iOS versions used a different layout, so the same gesture should not be assumed to exist there.
- Confirm you are in Messages: the procedure applies to an iPhone Messages conversation. Other apps may use a different plus button or attachment interface.
- Try again after returning to the conversation: if the composer is displaying another attachment panel, close that panel and start from the standard message field.
If the long-press remains unreliable, use the labeled menu. You lose one shortcut gesture but retain access to every documented photo-selection feature.

Photo sending limits, compression, and previews
How a picture is delivered is not determined solely by the gesture. Apple notes that carrier attachment limits can apply and that iPhone may compress attachments when necessary. The applicable limit and resulting quality can depend on the carrier and the conditions of the message.
For a smaller initial transfer, Apple provides Settings > Apps > Messages > Send Low Quality Photo Previews. Enable that setting when you prefer smaller previews to be sent first. It is an independent Messages setting; turning it on is not required for the long-press shortcut.
Compression can change the file that reaches the recipient, especially when a carrier limit requires a smaller attachment. If the original resolution is important, check the delivery method and the recipient’s ability to receive large files before sending a large batch. The shortcut only changes how you choose the pictures; it does not bypass attachment limits.

Use the menu for deliberate searching
Tap + and then Photos when the image is in an album, requires a search, or is not among your recent items. The extra tap buys you visibility into the full picker.
Use the documented flow for editing or annotation
If you need crop, editing, or Markup tools, begin with the labeled Photos option. That route makes the editing controls easier to find and gives you a clear Done step before sending.
Use the menu for non-photo attachments
The + list is still the correct starting point for other attachment choices. A long-press is optimized for recent photos, not for discovering every option Messages offers.

- Is the image recent? Hold +.
- Do you need an album or search? Tap +, then Photos.
- Do you need Markup or editing? Use the documented Photos workflow and finish with Done.
- Are you selecting several images? Either route supports multiple selection before sending.
- Could the files be large for your carrier? Expect possible compression or attachment limits; the gesture does not change those rules.
- Do you want smaller previews sent first? Review Settings > Apps > Messages > Send Low Quality Photo Previews.
What changed, and what did not
The visible interface changed between iOS 16 and iOS 17: separate Camera and Photos buttons were replaced by the + menu. The underlying ability to attach photos did not disappear. You can still open Photos from the menu, select multiple images, browse albums, search, edit, use Markup, and send from the same conversation.
The hidden gesture simply restores a faster path for the most common case. Because Apple’s user guide documents the menu rather than the long-press, treat the gesture as a convenience and keep the regular route in mind for compatibility and troubleshooting.
Bottom line for everyday use
Press and hold + beside the Messages text field to jump straight to recent photos on iOS 17 and later. Tap the pictures, edit if needed, and send. When you need search, albums, Markup, another attachment type, or a fully labeled path, tap + normally and choose Photos instead.
