Choose IIT Madras School Connect if a student in Classes IX–XII wants a structured, eight-week online introduction to a particular field and can access it through a partnered school. Choose a school-based enrichment program if its actual format better meets the student’s need for in-person practice, direct teacher support, or learning built into the school day. There is no evidence that one option produces better outcomes overall; the right choice depends on the course and the local program.
What is IIT Madras School Connect?
School Connect is an introductory online certificate program from the IIT Madras Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), intended for students in Classes IX, X, XI, and XII. Students access it through a school partnered with the program, and individual courses may have additional subject-level requirements. Each course is described as eight weeks long. The format includes recorded lectures, a weekly live session, assignments every two weeks, and computer-based assessments. Students who meet the course requirements receive an IIT Madras CODE certificate. This is an introductory certificate, not an IIT degree.
Subjects and course fit
In its September 2026 announcement, IIT Madras listed 17 future-focused disciplines, including data science and AI, aerospace, cybersecurity, electronic systems, architecture and design, law, economics and finance, humanities, ecology, game technology, and engineering biological systems. The list describes program breadth, not a guarantee that every course is open in every batch. Check the specific course’s availability and prerequisites before deciding.

IIT Madras also reported that School Connect had partnered with more than 4,900 schools, including more than 60 outside India, and that over 1.75 lakh students had benefited. These are institute-reported participation figures; they do not establish learning outcomes or show that School Connect is more effective than a school’s own enrichment offering.

“School-based enrichment” can mean different things at different schools, so its schedule, cost, teaching style, and activities cannot be assumed. Use the comparison below to identify what to verify locally.

Which option fits the student?
School Connect may be a better fit when…
- The student is curious about a specific discipline on the current course list and wants a defined introduction before making later academic choices.
- The student can manage recorded content independently and keep up with the live session, assignments, and assessments alongside regular school.
- The student’s school is partnered with School Connect and the student meets the relevant course requirements.
- The online format is practical for the family’s schedule and existing internet and device access.
School enrichment may be a better fit when…
- The local program offers the particular kind of practice or project work the student wants.
- The student benefits from being able to ask a teacher for help in person or receive more immediate feedback.
- Participation during the school day would make the activity easier to manage than an additional online commitment.
- The local offer is a closer match for the student’s goal than the specific School Connect course available.
When neither is an obvious winner
Ask the student what they want to learn and how they prefer to learn it. Then compare the actual course and local program on subject match, eligibility, weekly schedule, workload, teacher access, practical activities, technology, and total cost. If possible, review a course outline and ask the school what students will make, practise, or be assessed on. A certificate or institutional name alone does not settle the choice.
Check the next School Connect dates before planning
IIT Madras’s October 2026 cohort announcement gave September 30, 2026 as the application deadline and October 5, 2026 as the start date; both dates have passed. The School Connect home page states that registration for the January 2027 batch is scheduled to open on October 21, 2026. Since that opening date is still upcoming as of October 7, 2026, confirm the latest dates and course availability directly with IIT Madras before making plans. Do not confuse the certificate with an IIT Madras degree
IIT Madras separately offers online degree programs. Its Management and Data Science admissions page says students may apply after appearing for Class XI finals but join after passing Class XII. That is a different route with a degree-level commitment, not the eight-week School Connect certificate. The page also identifies good internet and a laptop or desktop as key requirements for effective learning in those degree programs.
