No one can give you a proven lifespan for foldable phones as a category. The best figure on record comes from Samsung: its Flex hinge is designed for at least 200,000 folding cycles, which Samsung translates to more than five years at 100 folds a day. That is a manufacturer’s cycle-life statement. It doesn’t guarantee that any single hinge, flexible display or whole phone will last that long, and the official material reviewed here includes no independent, cross-brand real-world failure rate.

How to read “200,000 folds”
A cycle count approximates repeated opening and closing under a manufacturer’s test or design criteria. It says nothing about calendar years, other components, or every kind of use. The arithmetic behind the “five years” claim is simple: 200,000 cycles at 100 a day is 2,000 days, or roughly five and a half years. Most people fold far less than 100 times a day, so the number may stretch longer for them, but that is arithmetic, not a measured result.

The wording also differs between Samsung pages. The Philippines FAQ says “on average.” The Korean page says “at least” 200,000 cycles for ordinary-use hinge operation. Those aren’t the same promise, so don’t treat them as one. Coverage also depends on model and region, so check the support page for your exact phone.

Cycle life also isn’t screen life. The hinge figure doesn’t cover the inner display’s surface, which can be scratched, pressed or punctured, or damage from drops, grit and liquid.

What can look or sound odd without being a defect
Samsung’s FAQs describe several characteristics as part of the design for the models they discuss:
- Small visible curves or bends along the fold, which Samsung attributes to how the screen is built.
- Minor differences in frame height or alignment arising from the hinge design.
- Slight shifting when the phone is shaken or touched while fully open or partly folded.
- Some clicking or snagging sensations while folding.
The Philippines FAQ covers the Z Flip5 and Fold5. Samsung Korea’s newer page discusses similar movement and fold-area features for its listed models. Treat these as descriptions of normal traits, not a remote diagnosis. A hinge that suddenly gets worse, a new display fault, lines, dead areas or visible damage is a reason to contact support, not to assume it’s harmless.

Dust is the hinge’s named enemy
Motorola’s Razr Fold support page says to avoid dust because it can reduce hinge life and damage the display. Its cleaning advice is to use a dry, soft cloth on the screen, avoid abrasive materials and bleach, and never spray cleaner directly onto the screen. Don’t assume other foldables share the same dust protection or cleaning rules. Follow your model’s own guidance.

A case can help protect the exterior. Motorola points Razr Fold owners to cases and accessories made for that phone. Nothing in the sources shows that a case extends hinge or inner-screen lifespan.

Repair and coverage matter as much as the cycle count
Samsung’s FAQ links to authorized support, repair booking, repair-cost estimates and Samsung Care+. Those links don’t establish current prices, terms or eligibility in your country. Before buying any foldable, look up the repair cost for the inner display, the warranty terms, and whether accidental damage is covered.
Comparing foldables when you shop
The published figures aren’t consistent enough across brands to rank them by lifespan. Compare each model on its own documentation:

- Whether a hinge figure is a test result, design target or average, and what the conditions were.
- Dust and water resistance, with the stated test conditions and warranty limits.
- Inner-display construction and the maker’s handling or protector guidance.
- Local repair availability, repair cost, warranty and accidental-damage cover.
- Independent long-term ownership reports, kept separate from manufacturer lab claims.
The realistic answer
Samsung’s published target works out to about five years of heavy daily folding for its listed Fold and Flip generations. For other brands, Google and Motorola publish no comparable number in the sources reviewed. Expect the hinge to be only one of several wear points, with dust, drops and screen surface damage the likelier problems. A solid warranty and a known repair price are the best protection for the unknowns.
