School students have two distinct ways to study online with IIT Madras: short certificate courses through IITM School Connect for Classes IX–XII, and longer online BS degree programs with their own admissions and progression rules. For School Connect, start with the course listing and ask your school whether it is a partner; for a degree, use the admissions page for the specific program.

Find a School Connect course and enroll
- Open the official course listing. Check the IITM School Connect page for courses shown for the current cohort. Listed subject areas have included data science and AI, electronic systems, architecture and design, and engineering biological systems; availability can change by cohort.
- Read the individual course details. Confirm the class level, prerequisites, duration and certificate conditions on that course’s page. Do not assume one course’s rules apply to another.
- Ask your school whether it is a partner. School partnership is mandatory. The School Connect student guide directs students to contact their school for the enrollment procedure. Portal access follows verification by the School Connect team.
- Follow the active cohort’s instructions. Registration dates and form requirements can change. For example, the August 2026 form required the student’s own valid Gmail address; that historical condition should not be assumed for a later cohort.
IIT Madras announced on 7 September 2026 that applications had opened for the October 2026 cohort. The School Connect listing stated that registration for the January 2027 batch would open on 21 October 2026. That is an announced future date, not confirmation that registration is open now; check the live listing for the current status. The listing also described four batches per year, but students should use the live calendar for actual dates.
Check whether an online BS program fits your situation
BS Data Science and Applications
The BS Data Science admissions page says applicants may apply after passing Class XII or an equivalent. School students who have appeared for their Class XI final exams may apply and join after passing Class XII. The page also says applicants are expected to have studied Mathematics and English in Class X. It outlines a qualifier process; follow its cycle-specific instructions for eligibility, documents and deadlines.

The same admissions page identifies a laptop or desktop and good internet as key requirements for learning. It also mentions a smartphone for home-proctored online exams and travel to assigned exam centres for quizzes and exams. Check the current mandatory system specifications and exam instructions before making arrangements. These are program-specific requirements, not proof that every School Connect student must own a computer.
Other online BS options
IIT Madras’s CODE overview says students who have completed their Class XI final exams can attempt the qualifier and enter the foundation level while still studying Class XII, then join after completing Class XII. Treat that as a general overview: the relevant program’s admissions page controls the current eligibility and progression rules. Do not assume the Data Science requirements also apply to Electronic Systems or another program.

Check dates and claims before applying
- Use live pages, not old announcements. The School Connect dates above are cohort-specific. A 2026 School Connect announcement described the course format as eight weeks; course schedules can vary.
- Verify degree deadlines for the current cycle. A 11 May 2026 IIT Madras release described a 31 May deadline for BS admissions. That date has passed; it is not a current deadline. Use the chosen program’s admissions page.
- Interpret participation figures carefully. IIT Madras’s 2024–25 annual report says more than 36,000 students enrolled in referenced online programs, including Data Science and Electronic Systems. This is not a School Connect enrollment count.
For context, Andrew Thangaraj, Chair of IIT Madras’s Centre for Outreach and Digital Education, said in the 7 September 2026 School Connect announcement: “School Connect was built to give students an opportunity to explore, experience and understand different fields before making important academic choices.”
