iCloud Mail Aliases vs. Hide My Email: Which Should You Use?

iCloud Mail aliases offer a few recognizable addresses tied to your account; Hide My Email creates manageable random addresses for supported signups and sending.

Choose an iCloud Mail alias for a small number of stable, recognizable alternate @icloud.com addresses tied to your iCloud Mail account. Choose Hide My Email when you want random addresses for individual signups or supported sending flows, with the option to stop forwarding later; it requires iCloud+ or qualifying Family Sharing access.

What’s the difference between an iCloud email alias and Hide My Email?

What matters iCloud Mail alias Hide My Email
Purpose An alternate address for your existing iCloud Mail account. A random address that keeps your personal address out of supported signups, forms, and Apple flows.
Address You choose the text before @icloud.com. Apple generates a unique random address; you can add a label and note.
Eligibility Requires a primary iCloud Mail address. Requires iCloud+ or access through an iCloud+ Family Sharing group.
Quantity and lifecycle Up to three standard aliases. They cannot be changed, transferred, or converted to primary accounts; replacement after deletion at the limit requires a seven-day wait. Apple says you can create as many addresses as needed, then deactivate or delete addresses you no longer use.
Incoming mail Messages arrive in your primary iCloud Mail inbox by default. Messages forward to the personal address selected for your Apple Account.
Sending and replies Apple documents sending from an alias in iCloud Mail. Apple documents sending and replying without exposing your personal address; sending in Mail is limited to one recipient at a time.
Good fit A few recognizable addresses for roles or purposes you expect to keep. Separate signups or forms where you want address privacy and the option to stop forwarding.

An alias is not a separate mailbox or Apple Account: it remains attached to your iCloud Mail account, and Apple says it cannot be used to create a separate Apple Account. Hide My Email addresses are also not a promise of anonymity. The documented feature masks your address and forwards mail; it does not establish anonymity from the service you use, Apple, or other forms of tracking. Apple explains iCloud Mail aliases and Hide My Email’s behavior and availability.

Which one should you use?

Choose an iCloud Mail alias for a lasting alternate address

An alias works well when you want a memorable address for a role—such as a public contact address—or a recognizable variation for a purpose you expect to continue using. You choose the address text, and mail sent there reaches your primary inbox. Because aliases are limited and difficult to replace, treat each one as a long-term address rather than a disposable signup address.

Choose Hide My Email for distinct signups and forms

Hide My Email suits situations where you would rather not give a site or supported app your personal address. A separate random address can be labeled for its use, and you can deactivate it if you no longer want messages forwarded. Apple supports creation in contexts including Safari, Mail, Apple Pay in supported versions, certain third-party apps, device settings, and iCloud.com; the available options depend on the device, software version, and context. Apple lists supported creation contexts.

Can I use Hide My Email without iCloud+?

Apple lists iCloud+ or qualifying access through an iCloud+ Family Sharing group as the requirement. A standard iCloud Mail alias, by contrast, requires a primary iCloud Mail address rather than iCloud+.

How many iCloud email aliases can I have?

Apple allows up to three @icloud.com aliases on a standard account. You choose the alias text, which must be 3–20 characters. Aliases cannot be edited after creation, transferred, or converted into primary accounts. If you have three aliases and delete one, Apple requires a seven-day wait before you can create a replacement. Deleting an alias is permanent; turning it off temporarily or deleting it causes mail sent to it to be returned to the sender. Apple notes a separate rule for legacy MobileMe accounts. See its guides to alias limits and lifecycle and adding and managing aliases.

Can I reply from a Hide My Email address?

Yes. Apple documents sending and replying in Mail while keeping your personal address private. In Mail, sending is limited to one recipient at a time. For iCloud.com Mail, Apple says the forwarding destination should be your iCloud Mail address or a custom-domain address if you want Hide My Email messages to appear there. Apple’s iCloud.com Mail instructions and its iPhone Mail instructions describe the supported sending and reply behavior.

How to create and manage each address

Create an iCloud Mail alias

  1. Go to iCloud.com Mail and open Mail settings.
  2. Open the account or alias settings and choose the option to add an alias.
  3. Enter the desired address text, within Apple’s 3–20 character limit, and save it. The address uses the @icloud.com domain.

Apple’s iCloud.com alias guide covers adding, turning off, and managing aliases.

Create or manage a Hide My Email address

You can generate addresses inline in supported Apple flows or manage them in device settings and on iCloud.com. Apple’s documented Hide My Email feature set requires iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS 12 or later, though individual contexts may have newer minimums; Apple Pay use, for example, is documented for iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. To create an address on iCloud.com, Apple requires two-factor authentication. Apple’s setup guide explains access across devices, and its iCloud.com guide covers address creation and editing.

In settings, you can change the forwarding destination among eligible addresses associated with your Apple Account. Deactivating an address stops its forwarding; you can manage your addresses in iPhone settings.
