Then divide that affordable amount among gifts and seasonal costs, track purchases as you go, and decide in advance how you’ll pay. That makes it easier to spot a problem while you can still adjust.
1. Work out what you can afford
Start with the money you expect to have available before and during the holidays. Subtract ordinary expenses and obligations, including housing, utilities, food, and other bills. Then estimate seasonal costs such as travel, meals, hosting, parties, and decorations. What remains—without skipping bills or depending on debt—is your holiday spending cap.

Make this calculation early enough to save toward the amount if needed. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends making a realistic plan before the holidays rather than treating a desired shopping total as affordable by default: CFPB’s five-step holiday spending plan.
2. Divide the cap among gifts and other costs
List the people you plan to buy for and the amount you intend to spend on each. Give non-gift costs their own categories so travel or a gathering does not quietly eat into the gift allowance. Add the amounts together and check that the total stays within your cap.

| Category | Planned amount | Spent so far | Remaining |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gifts | Your limit | Record purchases | Planned amount minus spent |
| Travel | Your limit | Record purchases | Planned amount minus spent |
| Meals and hosting | Your limit | Record purchases | Planned amount minus spent |
| Parties, decorations, and other seasonal costs | Your limit | Record purchases | Planned amount minus spent |
Adjust the categories until their combined planned amounts fit the total. If an expense is uncertain, estimate it and leave room for it rather than assuming it will cost nothing.
3. Use the list to control unplanned purchases
Keep the recipient list and category limits where you can check them while shopping. Cross off items when you buy them. The CFPB suggests a simple rule: if an item is not on your list, do not buy it. For something tempting, write down what it is and its price, then decide after checking the rest of your plan instead of making the choice in the moment.

4. Choose how to pay—and how you will repay
Decide on your payment method before shopping. Taking only the cash allocated for a trip can make the limit tangible. A credit card can be convenient and may provide consumer rights in some situations, but it is not extra spending money: plan how the bill will be paid and make sure the payment fits your budget. The CFPB’s guidance on retail store credit cards recommends considering whether you can pay the balance in full. If you carry a balance, interest can make purchases cost more than their original prices.

Weigh any store-card discount against the card’s terms and your ability to repay. A discount does not make a purchase affordable if it leads to interest or a bill you cannot cover.

5. Track spending and adjust before you exceed the cap
Record purchases in a notebook, save receipts, review account records, or use a digital tracker. A method you will update consistently is more useful than a complicated system you abandon. The CFPB describes several ways to track spending, including using a small notebook: CFPB’s spending-tracking guide.
Check actual spending against each category and the remaining total often enough to make changes before the season is over. If one category comes in under budget, either keep the difference unspent or deliberately move it to another category and update your plan. Do not treat a sale as new money or let an unplanned purchase expand the overall cap.

The CFPB reported in 2018 that nearly 20 percent of annual retail sales occurred in November and December. That is a historical figure, not a current-year measurement, but it helps explain why a plan made before the shopping rush can be useful: CFPB’s 2018 report on year-end credit-card borrowing.
