iCloud Mail Alias Limit: Is It Now Nine?

iCloud.com is reportedly allowing some iCloud Mail users to create up to nine aliases, up from the previously documented limit of three. MacRumors said it confirmed the higher limit on October 5, 2026, but Apple’s support guide still lists three and Apple had not announced a change. Treat nine as a reported live limit, not a universally confirmed or permanent policy.

What changed—and what remains uncertain

MacRumors reported that its staff confirmed iCloud.com allowed as many as nine iCloud Mail aliases for an account, compared with the former three-alias limit. The report also noted that Apple had not announced the increase. MacRumors’ October 5, 2026 report is the source for the nine-alias figure.

Apple’s support guide, retrieved October 7, 2026, still says a primary iCloud Mail address can have up to three @icloud.com aliases. That conflicts with the reported interface change; the available information does not establish whether Apple’s documentation is simply out of date or whether the higher limit varies by account or region. A reader post on r/iCloud dated September 30, 2026 described seeing “2 of 9 used” while Apple’s help page still said three. That is an individual report, not evidence that nine aliases are available to every account. The r/iCloud discussion provides that anecdotal example.

What an iCloud Mail alias does

An alias is an alternate @icloud.com address attached to a primary iCloud Mail address. Apple describes it as a nickname that can help keep the primary address private. You can send and receive mail through an alias; incoming messages go to the primary inbox by default, and Apple says recipients do not see the primary address when you send from an alias. Apple’s guide to aliases explains their behavior.

An alias is not a separate Apple Account

Creating another @icloud.com alias does not create a separate mailbox identity or Apple Account. Apple says an alias cannot be used to create a separate Apple Account. Its support documentation also says aliases cannot be changed, transferred, or converted into primary accounts. If you need a distinct account rather than another address that routes into your primary inbox, an alias does not meet that need. Apple’s iCloud Mail address guidance covers these limits.

Turn an alias off or delete it carefully

Apple distinguishes temporarily disabling an alias from deleting it permanently. While an alias is turned off, messages sent to it are returned to the sender; deletion is permanent, and mail sent to the deleted address is also returned. Apple’s guide further says that after reaching the documented three-alias limit and deleting one, you must wait seven days before creating another. The guide does not say whether that waiting rule has changed with the reported nine-alias limit. Apple’s alias guide describes disabling, deleting, and the documented wait.

Custom-domain email is a different feature

If you want an address using a domain you own rather than an @icloud.com address, Apple offers custom email domains as a separate iCloud+ feature. You do not need a custom domain to create iCloud Mail aliases, and the reported alias increase does not change the distinction between the two features.
