Not yet. Deepinder Goyal has described checking pilots’ fitness to fly as a possible future use for Temple, not a capability shown to screen or certify pilots today. He also says Temple’s thought-to-text work is years away, perhaps until a third or fourth version.
What did Goyal say about using Temple with pilots?
Goyal said he would like Temple used “on pilots to check if they are fit to fly” and by the Air Force to identify “who is the fittest to fly a mission today.” India Today and Mint reported the comments on October 5, 2026. They describe an ambition for the device, not evidence that an airline or military has adopted Temple or that it can make operational fitness decisions.

The distinction matters: a fitness-to-fly decision has to be reliable enough for a consequential safety decision. The reports do not establish that Temple is approved for aviation use, or that it has been validated to classify pilots as fit or unfit.

India Today describes Temple as using a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, a type also found in consumer wearables. Goyal said, “We use a PPG sensor. Same as Apple Watch, and other wearables.” BrainFlow is described as tracking changes associated with blood flow to the brain. That is not the same as directly reading neural signals or translating a person’s thoughts into text.

Goyal also said the PPG sensor would not hurt a developing brain. That is his assurance, not independent safety evidence. The available reporting does not provide an independent assessment establishing safety for children or other particular groups.
What do the reported study figures show—and what don’t they show?
India Today reported Goyal’s account of a second Temple BrainFlow validation study involving 60 participants and three physiological challenges. He said the study found correlations of 0.84 to 0.91 against time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for changes in brain blood volume. In a head-down tilt test, he reported a 0.91 correlation for brain blood volume and 0.49 for scalp blood volume. The report characterized the study as a preprint submitted for peer review.

Those are study-specific correlations between measurements, as reported by Goyal. They are not diagnostic accuracy rates, and they do not show how well Temple would identify whether an individual pilot is fit to fly. The reported figures alone also do not establish that the measurement works reliably across different people, conditions or real-world aviation settings.
Why is a blood-flow-related measurement not a pilot fitness verdict?
Even if a sensor tracks a physiological signal, deciding whether someone is fit for a mission requires evidence that the signal can support that decision. The reports do not show a validated threshold, a pilot screening protocol, or results demonstrating that Temple can distinguish fit from unfit pilots.

Neurologist Praveen Gupta, quoted by The Indian Express, questioned whether a device attached at one point could reliably represent blood flow across both sides of the brain and through all its arteries, particularly deeper and smaller ones. That is an expert’s measurement concern, not a regulator’s finding or a formal determination about Temple.
Could Temple read thoughts or open an app by intention?
Goyal said a research team was working on “thoughts to text,” but added that it looked “like a few years away” and might arrive in the third or fourth version of Temple. This describes future research, not a feature of the current device. The reporting does not establish that Temple can decode thoughts, convert them to text, or detect an intention to open an app and then control a phone.

Can people buy Temple now?
India Today reported that pre-orders in India were expected soon and that early-access waitlist members would receive priority. That is a limited report of expected availability, not confirmation that general orders are open. The cited reports do not establish a settled price or verify an Amazon listing.
