The snapshot says Ice Caves can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes, but gives no exact coordinates or guaranteed surface biome. This information is snapshot-specific and does not establish availability in a stable release or Bedrock Edition.
Are Snowy Caves a real Minecraft biome?
The official sources reviewed describe Ice Caves in the Java snapshot, but do not identify “Snowy Caves” as a separate official cave biome. Mojang’s biome material distinguishes cave biomes such as lush and dripstone caves from surface biomes such as groves and snowy slopes. A cave that looks snowy, or content added by a player-made add-on, may use the phrase informally; that does not make it an official biome name.

This distinction is version-sensitive. The official Minecraft Help overview lists established biome names, and Mojang’s 1.18 update article describes snowy slopes and groves as surface biomes. Neither source establishes a universal absence across every edition, snapshot, add-on, or future update.

What is inside an Ice Cave?
The snapshot describes Ice Caves as consisting mainly of packed ice and calcite. Their other features include:
- Icicles hanging from ceilings, plus large packed-ice icicles that can form on the ground or ceiling.
- Occasional snow patches on the ground and ice crystals that sometimes generate on the ground.
- Ores in pockets of stone and deepslate; glow lichen does not generate in the biome.
- Normal cave mobs, as well as Strays and Frostbites.
Ice crystals emit light and can be placed in any direction. They break if their support block is removed. Downward-pointing icicles can naturally grow to five blocks long, and nearby light sources can break pointed blocks—so placing lights near icicles may alter the cave. Frostbites can inflict the Freezing effect with melee attacks and throw Ice Balls with ranged attacks. In the snapshot, leather armor protects against freezing as it does in Powder Snow, but does not stop the effect from being applied or remove it.

Where do you find Ice Caves in Minecraft?
Look for cave openings or cave systems beneath colder Overworld biomes. Mojang’s exact wording is: “The Ice Cave is a new cave biome that can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld.” The important qualifier is can: this describes a possible generation location, not a guarantee that every cold surface biome has an Ice Cave below it.
The 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes do not specify a Y-level, seed, exact list of surface biomes, or sure-fire locating method. Mojang’s older 1.18 notes explain more generally that cave biomes may sometimes generate directly below surface biomes; that does not provide a guaranteed Ice Cave location. Explore natural cave entrances and connected cave systems rather than relying on a particular coordinate or assuming that digging beneath any snowy patch will work.

Which edition has Ice Caves?
The documented feature is in Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3, published October 6, 2026. A snapshot is not proof that the feature has reached a stable Java release, and the cited notes do not establish Bedrock Edition support. Check the current official Java and Bedrock changelogs for release status before looking for the biome in a non-snapshot world.
