Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

They need a deliberate plan: identify the business problem, understand the applications and users affected, and deliver a bounded first improvement before choosing a broader modernization path.
Start with the problem, not the technology
IBM Redbooks recommends beginning a modernization journey by identifying the problem to solve and listening to users and stakeholders. That keeps a project focused on an outcome—rather than a technology change with no clear business case.

Common starting points include a difficult-to-use interface, lack of mobile access, performance concerns, or friction when connecting IBM i applications to other systems. Record which users experience the problem, how it affects their work, and which business process depends on the affected application.
Before changing anything, map the active programs and their dependencies: data, integrations, surrounding processes, and user groups. This gives the team a clearer view of what a change could affect and where a small improvement is feasible. IBM Redbooks discusses this user- and problem-led approach in its IBM i modernization guidance.

Choose a small first step with visible value
A first project should be narrow enough to deliver and evaluate without committing the organization to a platform-wide transformation. IBM Redbooks offers examples such as improving one frequently used interface, exposing a business function as a web service, or making performance data easier to access.
Define the intended outcome and scope before selecting tools. For example, a team might focus on a single user group and application screen, or on one integration that currently requires avoidable manual work. Agree on how the team will recognize improvement, then use what it learns to decide whether and where to continue.

Make skills and development workflow part of the plan
Legacy code and limited access to modern development tools can make staffing and retention harder, according to IBM Redbooks. IBM’s 2025 IBM i strategy presentation identifies modern RPG, open-source technologies, VS Code extensions, and automation as directions for improving developer experience. These are IBM’s stated priorities, not independent evidence about the labor market or a guarantee that a particular tool fits every team.

Assess the current workflow alongside the skills available to maintain it. Consider how developers work with source code, build and test changes, collaborate, and automate repetitive tasks. A modernization project can address a painful workflow in parallel with a user-facing improvement, but avoid introducing tools without a clear operational need and a support plan.

Include security and recovery in modernization decisions
Security requirements belong in the scope from the start, not as a final check after a design is chosen. IBM’s 2025 strategy presentation describes IBM i 7.6 integrated multifactor authentication (MFA), compatibility with TOTP client authenticators, Git-based compilation, and other security-related changes. These are release- and configuration-specific claims; confirm the applicable IBM documentation for the exact IBM i version and environment before relying on them.
Also assess availability and recovery requirements. A change to an interface, integration, development workflow, or hosting arrangement can affect how a service is operated and restored. Document the organization’s recovery needs and verify that the proposed approach fits its security, compliance, and data-control constraints.

Compare infrastructure options against the workload
IBM describes IBM i use in hybrid-cloud settings and incremental modernization, but that does not make cloud migration or any single deployment model right for every organization. Compare credible options against the workload and the team’s constraints rather than treating modernization as synonymous with replacement.

| Business and user value | Which specific problem will the change solve, and who benefits? |
| Applications and data | Which active programs, business processes, data, and integrations depend on the workload? |
| Integration and portability | How must the workload connect to other systems, and how much flexibility or portability does the organization need? |
| Security and control | What security, compliance, data-control, or sovereignty requirements apply? |
| Operations and resilience | What availability and recovery outcomes are required, and who will operate the environment? |
| People and workflow | Can the team support the development tools, skills, and operating model the option requires? |
| Cost and scope | What are the operational costs and burdens, and can the first phase be delivered within a clear boundary? |
IBM Consulting identifies performance, cost visibility, control, compliance, and data sovereignty among modernization concerns. Use those as evaluation areas, not as proof that one infrastructure choice is universally better. IBM’s descriptions of hybrid-cloud options and modernization are available on its infrastructure page and modernization services page.

Check lifecycle support for the exact version
Support status is specific to a product and version; a date for one release should not be applied to every IBM i installation. Check the lifecycle information for the exact version in use, then factor its support position into the timing and scope of any planned change. IBM’s product lifecycle site provides version-specific information.
