When a task involves choosing a date, comparing options, or changing constraints, a useful AI response may be a form, chart, map, or other interactive interface—not another long block of prose. The right format depends on the task: use text for a direct explanation, and an interface when users need to select, compare, manipulate, or navigate information.
What does it mean for AI to return an interface?
Generative UI is an AI system that creates or composes an interactive interface for a request instead of returning everything as prose or markdown. That interface might be a booking form, a chart, a map, a checklist, or a task-specific dashboard. The aim is not to make every answer look more elaborate; it is to put useful choices and relationships where the user can act on them.

A booking example
Imagine arranging a restaurant booking through chat. If the system asks for a date, then a time, then a party size, then repeats the available choices in text, the user has to keep translating prose into decisions. A date picker, time selector, and submit button can make those choices visible and actionable in one place. Google’s A2UI announcement uses this kind of booking task to illustrate why an interface can reduce back-and-forth.
Interfaces are not always the answer
A short factual question or an open-ended explanation may be clearer as text. An interface can add waiting, visual clutter, and extra interaction without helping the user. The format should follow the work the user needs to do, not a blanket rule that AI responses should always be interactive.

What do the preference studies show?
Two research projects report that participants often preferred generative interfaces, but their figures come from separate studies and should not be combined or treated as universal predictions.
| Study | Reported result | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Research generative-UI evaluation | Users preferred the system’s generated UI to its standard markdown UI in 83% of evaluated cases. On the Information Seeking prompt set, the reported preference was 92.6%. Generated pages were at least comparable to expert-made pages in 44% of cases. | Results for a particular research system and evaluation. The paper reports that expert-made pages were broadly preferred overall; the figures do not show that interfaces outperform prose or expert design for every user or task. |
| Generative Interfaces for Language Models project, 2025 | The project page reports preference for generative interfaces in over 70% of cases. | A separate result from a different project and method. The page also reports a 76-participant study using participants’ own daily queries, but does not say that the over-70% figure applies exclusively to that study. It notes that preferences vary by domain. |
The Google Research paper describes its work as a preprint under review. Its system generated complete web pages and accompanying assets, and the evaluation compared those outputs with markdown, text, search results, and expert-made sites. These figures are evidence that generated interfaces can be useful in some settings—not proof of universal superiority or long-term gains in task completion.
When should AI give an interface instead of text?
Choose a format by asking what the user must do next. The case for an interface is strongest when useful information needs to be selected, compared, adjusted, or explored spatially.

- Use prose for a concise factual answer, a conceptual explanation, or open-ended reasoning where reading is the main task.
- Use a fixed template when a recurring task has stable fields and predictable choices, and a standard form or checklist can serve users without generating a new layout each time.
- Consider a generated interface when the task has changing constraints or options and users benefit from adjusting those inputs in context—for example, comparing alternatives by sortable attributes or exploring trip possibilities on a map.
Before choosing a generated interface, check whether it offers more than decoration. Can the user change a constraint, request an alternative, or understand what action will submit? If not, a well-structured text answer or conventional form may be simpler.
What should a trustworthy generated interface do?
Interface generation shifts some of the work from composing a response to helping a person understand and control a result. Google Cloud’s UX guidance draws on qualitative feedback from prototypes tested with 15 external users. That small study is useful as design input, not as a population-wide measure of preference.
- Make generation legible. Show when generation starts and ends, and make clear what is being generated. Google Cloud’s UX article recommends helping users understand triggers and endpoints.
- Keep the result adjustable. Let users edit preferences, constraints, or parameters and ask for alternatives. The UX article describes participants appreciating regeneration with specified preferences and suggested prompts or editable parameters.
- Show evidence behind claims. Provide links to source material for recommendations, summaries, and time-sensitive facts. A polished interface should not make information harder to verify.
- Make feedback contextual. Put a feedback option beside the response or element being rated so users can identify what worked or failed.
- Respect intent. The UX article describes users preferring controls that matched what they had asked for, such as image-generation controls when they had expressed image intent.
- Fit the host product. Use the host application’s visual conventions and accessibility practices; a generated layout should not become a separate, harder-to-use world.
How can systems render generated interfaces more safely?
One implementation approach is to generate the interface description while the host application retains control of the components that actually render. Google’s A2UI project describes sending declarative messages that a client turns into native, pre-approved components. In that model, an agent requests components from a trusted catalog rather than sending executable UI code. The project presents this as an early-stage open effort, not a settled universal standard or proof that all generated interfaces are secure.

OpenUI documentation describes another toolkit for generating interactive interfaces from an application’s components, with repair and monitoring capabilities. These examples illustrate an important design choice: constrain what can be rendered, validate the result, and preserve the host product’s control over styling and behavior.
AI-generated interfaces should also be distinguished from AI agents that operate another product’s interface. Microsoft Research describes API-based agents as working through programmatic endpoints and GUI-based agents as acting through graphical interfaces; hybrid approaches can combine them. Generating a form for a user to interact with is a different job from having an agent click through someone else’s application.

Generation may take too long
Google Research identifies latency as a primary limitation of its implementation, which could take about one to two minutes to generate a result. Streaming partially rendered output reduced the wait by about half in that system. These timings describe that research implementation, not all current generative-UI products; still, a delay can erase the convenience of an interface for a task that needs a quick answer.

The output may break
The same paper reports occasional JavaScript, CSS, or HTML errors. A system needs validation and a clear fallback—such as a text answer or a conventional page—when generated output fails, rather than leaving the user with a broken control or blank result.
Trust and security need more than a polished layout
Sources should remain visible for factual claims and recommendations, and the rendering boundary should be explicit. A2UI’s client-rendered, declarative design is one project’s approach; it does not guarantee the safety of other architectures. IEEE lists P3394 as an active project concerning LLM-agent interfaces, protocols, and guidelines for communication among applications, agents, and users. It is a standards project, not a finalized standard.

What is the practical rule?
Let the user’s task determine the response format. If the user mainly needs to read, answer in clear text. If the user needs to choose, compare, adjust, or explore, an interface may reduce effort—provided it is fast enough, adjustable, accessible, verifiable, and backed by a dependable fallback.
