For example, you could ask, “Remind me next Friday to renew my passport.” Scheduled tasks are one useful example of a capability frequent users may overlook—not a claim that this is the only hidden feature.
What scheduled tasks do
OpenAI describes scheduled tasks as actions ChatGPT can run once or on a recurring schedule. They can also monitor for changes and respond to supported events when available. One example in OpenAI’s Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT guide is a notification when a package is delivered.

The idea is to set up a future action in a conversation instead of relying on yourself to reopen ChatGPT at the right moment. A task might be a simple reminder, a recurring prompt, or—where supported—a notification tied to an event. The exact event options and controls depend on availability in your account and app.
How to try a task
-
In ChatGPT, ask for the action and timing in plain language. For a simple reminder, try: “Remind me next Friday to renew my passport.” For an event-based task, specify what you want monitored, if that kind of task is available to you.
-
Review the task ChatGPT creates. Check that the date, time, recurrence, and requested action match what you intended; clarify or correct them in the conversation if needed.
-
Check the Scheduled area in the app to confirm the task is listed and review its controls. Also check your notification settings if you expect an alert.
Do not assume a task is active just because you asked for one: confirm it appears in the Scheduled area. OpenAI notes that task availability depends on the account, app, and app version, so a missing option may reflect access or version differences rather than a problem with your prompt. The official guide does not establish that every event type is supported for every user.
When a Project is the better fit
A scheduled task and a Project solve different problems. A task is for an action at a future time, on a recurring schedule, or in response to a supported event. A Project is a place to keep related conversations, files, and instructions together while working toward an ongoing objective. OpenAI explains Projects in its Projects in ChatGPT guide.
Rank #3
For example, a Project could hold reference material and chats for a long-running trip plan; a scheduled task could remind you to complete a particular booking step next week. Do not assume a scheduled task can read files saved in a Project: OpenAI’s task guide says tasks cannot access Project files.
Other ChatGPT capabilities beyond ordinary text chat
Scheduled tasks are only one example. OpenAI’s ChatGPT capabilities overview describes a broader set of tools and modes, including web search, deep research, image input and generation, file and audio uploads, data analysis, voice, Canvas, memory, Projects, and custom GPTs. Which options appear can depend on your subscription level and settings; the overview is a guide to capabilities, not a guarantee that every account has every tool.
If you have used ChatGPT only for typed questions and answers, it is worth checking the tools and menus available in your own account. Start with the task example above if you want a concrete way to try something beyond a one-off chat, then explore other options only if they fit what you need to do.
Why availability can differ
ChatGPT’s feature set is not identical for every user. Account access, subscription or workspace controls, settings, app availability, and app version can affect what you see. OpenAI’s What is ChatGPT: FAQ provides general account context, while the capability-specific help pages describe the relevant tools and limits.
Best Value
-
If you do not see a feature, check that you are using a current version of the app and look at the feature’s official help page for availability details.
-
If you can create a task but expect a notification and receive none, review the task in Scheduled and check notification settings.
-
If you are organizing ongoing work, use a Project for its chats, files, and instructions rather than expecting a scheduled task to draw on Project files.
