To know whether grocery ordering is actually working, monitor the customer journey from outside your network—not just whether the home page loads or a server responds. Check the key steps shoppers need, measure both failures and slowdowns, and connect each alert to evidence responders can use. A healthy server can coexist with a broken search, cart, or checkout handoff.
What “available” means to a grocery shopper
A website can return a successful response and still fail as a shopping service. A shopper may reach the storefront but be unable to find products, see usable availability or pricing, add an item to a cart, or proceed to checkout. Conversely, a page that loads slowly may technically be up while making the purchase journey frustrating or impractical.

For monitoring purposes, define availability around the customer-visible functions that matter to your store. A practical inventory includes storefront access, product discovery, item availability and pricing presentation, cart behavior, and the handoff into checkout. For each, describe what success looks like from the shopper’s perspective—for example, a search returns expected content, a selected item appears in the cart, or the next checkout step can be reached.
These are representative functions to adapt to your own site, not a universal grocery checkout script. The specific platforms, delivery areas, checkout providers, and service objectives differ by retailer. No grocery-specific universal outage threshold or probe schedule is established by the cited guidance.

Why external checks matter during an incident
Internal monitoring tells you about your own services; an external check tells you whether a customer-facing path is working from somewhere beyond your infrastructure. Google SRE’s Home Depot case study recommends supplementing white-box performance monitoring with black-box checks because failures can occur in networks, caches, or proxies outside an individual service.
This distinction is useful during an outage. A service dashboard might look healthy while a particular network path, cache layer, or customer-facing page is failing. An external check can reveal that mismatch. It does not replace internal telemetry: it helps detect impact, while metrics, dependency health, and logs help explain it.
Google SRE’s Incident Management Guide puts the alerting principle this way: “Alerts should be based on symptoms, not causes: Alerts should be based on end-to-end measures of customer/client experience, not based on a system’s internal behavior.” Treat that as a design principle: alert on a failed or degraded customer journey, then use internal signals to investigate why.

1. Probe the journeys that shoppers need
Use a black-box check for important browser journeys and simpler HTTP checks where a full browser is unnecessary. A lightweight request can confirm that a page or endpoint responds; a scripted browser check can validate that the page rendered useful content or that a shopper-like action worked. A home-page-only check is not enough to establish that ordering functions.

Choose a small set of representative, high-value paths rather than trying to automate every possible shopping behavior. Include the parts of the journey whose failure would prevent customers from ordering, and make the test result meaningful: a response alone is not success if required content is missing or the next step is unusable.
2. Check from relevant locations and networks
Run checks from external vantage points that reflect where your customers live and how they reach the service. For a retailer, probe locations should be chosen in light of delivery areas and customer distribution. A check from the company office or the same cloud network as the storefront can miss regional or path-specific failures.
The 2025 Retail Website Performance Benchmark Report from Observability.com calls out user-perspective measurements across geography and network type. Its findings are a vendor-published benchmark, not a universal standard or grocery-only study; use the idea to shape your coverage, not as proof that a particular set of locations is sufficient for your business.

Separate complete unavailability from partial degradation. A check can fail because of DNS or connection problems, an unexpected response status or page, missing content, a browser step that cannot be completed, or response time outside the tolerance your business has set. Keep the failure reason alongside the result so that responders can tell whether the symptom is “cannot connect,” “page rendered incorrectly,” or “journey is too slow.”

Set tolerances using your service objectives and normal behavior. The sources do not establish a universal response-time cutoff, error percentage, or check frequency for grocery retailers, so avoid copying a generic number without validating it against your own traffic patterns and customer impact. Internal resource alerts can supplement customer-facing alerts when they warn of impending exhaustion, but they should not substitute for a signal that the shopping experience is failing.
4. Join the customer signal to internal evidence
For every failed check, make it easy to inspect the affected journey, probe location, response code, and timing. Link the alert to the relevant service metrics, dependency health, logs, and recent production changes. Metrics help show the scale and shape of an issue; logs can help explain individual failures. Recent changes and dependency status can narrow the investigation, but neither should be treated as a substitute for observing what shoppers experience.
5. Make alerts actionable and test their route
An alert should reach a person or team able to act, with enough context to start triage. Keep playbooks current and make the alert identify the failed customer-visible function rather than only naming a low-level symptom. Google SRE recommends timely, user-facing, symptom-based alerts, and testing both the alert condition and notification path.
Test the monitoring itself. Google SRE describes using synthetic time series and assertions to test rule evaluation and routing. Exercise the condition that should fire, confirm it reaches the intended destination, and verify responders can find the relevant dashboard or runbook. Keep monitoring configuration controlled and reviewable so changes to a check do not quietly remove coverage.

How to check whether ordering is working during an outage
- Confirm the symptom from outside. Run an external check for storefront access and the key ordering steps, from locations relevant to your customers. Compare the customer-facing result with checks from your internal network rather than assuming either one tells the whole story.
- Identify where the journey stops. Record whether the check failed at access, discovery, cart, or the checkout handoff. A failed early step and a failure after adding an item have different customer impact and may involve different dependencies.
- Capture the observable evidence. Preserve the check’s location, response code, timing, and the page or step that failed. If a screenshot or other browser artifact is available, retain it with the incident details so a responder can see what the check saw.
- Correlate with internal signals. Inspect service and dependency metrics, relevant logs, and recent production changes. Use these to test possible causes; do not infer that customers are unaffected merely because a component’s internal health check is green.
- Route and escalate by impact. Send the alert to the responsible responder and include the failing journey and evidence. Follow the retailer’s own objectives for severity and escalation rather than applying a threshold that has not been validated for its service.
- Verify recovery from the shopper’s side. Keep the external check in view as teams mitigate the incident. A recovered server metric does not establish that the browser journey has recovered; confirm the affected step succeeds again.
Use screenshots as evidence, not as the whole monitoring system
A screenshot can help an incident responder inspect what a page looked like at capture time, but a captured image by itself does not establish that search, cart, or checkout works. Pair visual evidence with checks that validate the expected page content or action, and with internal telemetry for diagnosis.
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request, and its screenshot options include full-page capture, selecting an element by CSS selector, waiting for a selector or network idle, custom headers and cookies, and blocking selected requests or resource types. Those capabilities can support evidence collection, but the API should not be mistaken for a complete synthetic-monitoring and alert-routing system.
For a page capture, make a GET request with your API key and target URL. This runnable cURL example saves a WebP capture; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.

For incident evidence, replace the example target with a page you are authorized to capture. A clean screenshot can be useful for inspecting the underlying page, but a shopper-facing monitor may need to preserve the consent or overlay behavior that customers actually encounter. ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Configure capture behavior to match the question your check is intended to answer.

What benchmark findings do—and do not—show
Observability.com’s 2025 Retail Website Performance Benchmark Report states that “91% of retailers maintained near-perfect availability.” The report also says more than a quarter of the retailers it studied scored below 66 on its experience score. These are results from that report’s retail benchmark sample, not grocery-industry statistics or a general estimate for every retailer. Their practical implication is limited but important: an availability measure alone does not guarantee a strong user experience.

If you are evaluating a monitoring approach or service, assess it against the work your responders need to do. The following are selection questions, not claims that any particular provider has a specific feature or price.
| Evaluation area | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| External coverage | Can checks run from locations and network paths relevant to your delivery areas and customers? |
| Journey validation | Can you script browser actions and verify page content, not just receive an HTTP response? |
| Degradation detection | Can you distinguish slow or partially broken journeys from total failure? |
| Alert handling | Can alerts be routed, escalated, and suppressed appropriately for your incident process? |
| Diagnostic evidence | Can responders retain useful screenshots, traces, or other context with a failure? |
| Operational fit | Can results connect to your existing metrics, logs, and incident workflow? |
Common monitoring failures and how to correct them
- The home page is green, but customers cannot order. Add checks for product discovery, cart behavior, and the checkout handoff; a landing-page response does not test those functions.
- Internal checks pass while external users report failures. Add black-box probes outside your own network and cover customer-relevant locations. Compare their results with internal metrics to isolate the gap.
- Checks report success, but the page is unusable. Validate expected content or browser actions, not only the response status. Treat missing content or an incomplete step as a failure condition where it blocks the journey.
- Responders see alerts but cannot tell what failed. Attach journey, location, response code, timing, and links to relevant telemetry or recent changes. Keep the playbook close to the alert.
- Notifications do not reach the intended responder. Test the rule and its notification route, including the destination and escalation path. A configured alert is not proven until its delivery has been exercised.
- A synthetic checkout test risks creating a real order. Use a retailer-approved test path designed to avoid real customer orders or charges. Confirm the test’s side effects with the teams that own checkout before enabling it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can monitoring prove that every shopper can place an order?
No. A synthetic check samples specific journeys, locations, and times. It is evidence about those paths, not a guarantee for every customer, device, network, or order.
Should retailers use only browser checks?
No. Browser checks show customer-facing behavior, while HTTP checks and internal metrics or logs can provide faster, more focused signals for particular components. Choose the simplest check that can reliably validate the behavior you need.
