Logseq is a credible open-source alternative to Obsidian, and its support for Markdown and Org-mode makes it worth considering if you want more control over your notes. But open source alone does not prove that an AI feature keeps your notes private. My trust in an AI note workflow is a personal judgment, not a security guarantee—and the specific AI setup behind that judgment matters.
Why Logseq is a plausible Obsidian alternative
The Logseq project describes the app as an open-source platform for knowledge management and collaboration. An independent comparison also characterizes it as a privacy-first outliner. Those descriptions make Logseq a reasonable candidate for someone looking beyond Obsidian, but they do not establish that it will fit every note-taking workflow or that every feature is private by default.

Logseq’s README describes support for Markdown and Org-mode, giving users familiar text-based formats to work with. That is useful context for portability, but it is not a promise that every app feature or data structure will transfer cleanly to another tool. Check the result of any migration or export before relying on it as your only copy of important notes. Logseq’s README
What makes an AI note app trustworthy?
“Open source” and “privacy-first” are starting points, not answers to the most important question about AI: what happens to your content when you use it? The available project materials do not identify which AI plugin or service a particular user has tried, whether it sends note content off-device, or what controls are available to disable that flow. Those details need to be checked for the specific integration you intend to use.
#1 Best Overall
- A digital notebook for all your writing needs - Replace your stack of notebooks with a single device purpose-built for writing, reading, and thinking. No notifications or social media.
- With AI tools to transform your notes - Convert messy handwriting into readable font, summarize your notes, and change their length and tone with built-in AI notebook tools.
- Feels like pen on paper - See, feel and hear your thoughts meet the page with every stroke of the Premium Pen. No need to set up or charge, just start writing.
- Easily import and mark up documents - Import documents and PDFs using Send to Kindle, and mark them up directly on the page.
- Capture insights as you read – Just start writing on a book's page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.
- Where notes are stored: establish whether your notes live locally, in a synced service, or in both places.
- What the AI receives: identify what note content, prompts, or metadata is sent to an external provider, if anything.
- What you can control: find out whether the AI feature can be configured or switched off, and whether the app remains usable without it.
- How retrieval works: assess whether linking, search, and AI-assisted retrieval surface the information you need reliably.
- What maintenance takes: account for setup, plugin upkeep, sync, and backups—not just the initial download.
- What it costs: check current app and service pricing directly; it can change, and no current price comparison is established here.
A 2026 comparison of personal knowledge-management apps uses capture speed, linking, search and retrieval, AI, privacy and data ownership, time to value, and price as comparison criteria. Its author identifies as the founder of a competing note product and acknowledges product bias, so treat the criteria as a useful checklist rather than a neutral ranking. Read the comparison and its stated perspective.
Backups matter, especially with Logseq’s database version
As of October 9, 2026, the Logseq project describes its database version as beta, and its new mobile app and RTC as alpha. The project warns that data loss is possible in the database version and recommends automated or regular SQLite database backups. If you choose that version, make backups part of your workflow instead of assuming that open-source software or local files remove the risk. These development labels can change, so check the project’s current status before switching. Logseq project repository

How to decide whether it fits your workflow
Compare Logseq, Obsidian, or any cloud-first AI note app against the same needs rather than choosing based on a single label such as “open source” or “AI-native.” Start with your everyday note workflow, then inspect how AI and sync change the data flow.
- Test capture and organization. Try your usual ways of taking notes, linking ideas, and finding material again. A tool that is powerful but slows down capture may not suit your habits.
- Verify portability. Confirm which formats you can use and test an export with representative notes, including links and any structured content you depend on.
- Trace the AI data path. Read the documentation for the exact plugin or service you plan to use. Do not infer its behavior from the host app’s open-source status.
- Review dependencies and upkeep. Consider sync, plugins, backups, and any external services needed for the workflow you want.
- Check the current cost and maturity. Confirm current pricing and project status directly, especially if you depend on beta or alpha features.
On the available evidence, Logseq merits a trial as an open-source alternative with Markdown and Org-mode support. Whether its AI workflow deserves your trust depends on the specific integration and its data practices—not on the app’s label alone.
