A smart home hub can make connected devices easier to control locally and across brands, but buying one does not make a home private by itself. Matter includes privacy and security protections, yet device makers, apps, cloud services, accounts, and the home network still shape what information leaves the house and who can access it.
What a home hub can—and cannot—do for privacy
A hub or controller coordinates compatible smart-home devices. When commands are handled on the home network, some actions can work without sending each instruction through a vendor’s cloud. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) describes Matter as a standard for local connectivity. That can reduce dependence on cloud services for supported local control, but it is not a promise that every device function stays local.

It helps to assess privacy as a set of specific questions: which commands remain on the home network, what data goes to a device maker or platform, who can manage access, how updates are delivered, and what stops working if the internet or a vendor service is unavailable. A hub is one part of that picture; endpoints, voice assistants, apps, cloud services, and accounts matter too.

Local control is not the same as no internet connection
Matter-only devices need an internet-connected controller in the home for control while you are away. Some devices may also connect directly to the internet through a manufacturer’s app. So a local command path at home does not rule out remote access or a separate connection to a vendor service. The precise behavior depends on the device, controller, and feature.

Matter’s protections have limits
The CSA says Matter uses data minimization, end-to-end encryption, unique device identity, and fine-grained access control. It states: “The Matter standard places a high priority on the protection of user privacy through practices such as data minimization.” Those are standard-level design measures, not independent proof that a particular hub or complete ecosystem is private. The CSA also cautions that overall privacy depends on protections provided by service providers and device makers.
Why trust is a real concern
NIST’s December 7, 2020 publication describes an in-depth interview study by Julie Haney, Susanne M. Furman, and Yasemine Acar involving 40 smart-home consumers. Participants raised privacy and security concerns, often described limited transparency or configuration options, and many accepted risks in exchange for perceived benefits. Because this was a qualitative interview study, it does not show how common those views are among all smart-home users.

The practical lesson is not that connected homes are inherently unsafe or that a hub solves the problem. It is that people need understandable controls and clear information about data, access, and support—and should check those details rather than relying on a “privacy-first” label.
How to evaluate a Matter hub or controller
Before buying, check the exact controller and the devices you plan to use. Matter can support multiple platforms through multi-admin, and bridges can connect some Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. Actual compatibility depends on whether the controller or bridge supports the specific devices and features your household needs.

| What to check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Local and cloud control | Which actions work on the home network, and which require a platform or manufacturer’s cloud? |
| Remote access | Does away-from-home control go through the home controller, a direct device connection, or both? |
| Protocols and device coverage | Does the setup support the protocols you need, such as Matter, Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet? Is a Zigbee or Z-Wave bridge required? Are your device categories and desired features supported? |
| Household access | Can household members view paired accessories, manage platform access, and remove access when needed? |
| Updates and account security | Is the controller and each device receiving updates? Are unique credentials and two-factor authentication available? |
| Vendor practices | What data does the maker or service collect, how is it used, and what happens if the service is discontinued? |
Controls vary by platform. For example, Apple documents iOS pairing permission and a place to view and manage Matter accessories; that is an example of one platform’s controls, not a guarantee that all Matter systems offer the same interface.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises treating the router as a central part of connected-device security: “The key to privacy in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) world is your router.” A hub cannot compensate for weak network or account security. Apply the FTC’s practical steps across the router and devices:

Reset connected devices when a home changes hands
A move or sale is also an access-control event. The FTC advises people buying or selling a connected home to reset devices, remove prior administrative access and personal information, and review privacy settings and support policies. A reset helps prevent a previous resident’s account or configuration from continuing to control devices; review each device’s own process and permissions rather than assuming that changing the Wi-Fi password is sufficient.
