I Swapped Sleep Earbuds for a Pillow Speaker: What a Three-Week Test Found

A Tom’s Guide reviewer says a $50 under-pillow speaker, the Jabees PEACE Duo, let them stop wearing earbuds to bed after months of sore ears. The speaker works for some listeners, but it is not a fit for everyone, and the reviewer’s experience does not amount to medical evidence.

What the reviewer tested

The product behind the headline is the Jabees PEACE Duo Pillow Speaker. Tom’s Guide reviewer Frances Daniels published the review on September 17, 2026, after using the speaker for more than three weeks. The writer had been sleeping in earbuds every night and reported that their ear canals had become sore. The review describes that as one person’s experience, not a clinical finding about earbuds in general.

How an under-pillow speaker differs from earbuds

Earbuds put sound directly into the ear canal. A pillow speaker sits under the head and delivers audio through the pillow, so nothing needs to be inserted or worn. According to the review, the PEACE Duo is built from two small speakers joined by a flexible strip, and it is designed for nighttime listening rather than daytime use.

The review lists the following features:

  • Connectivity: Bluetooth streaming from a phone or other device.
  • Offline playback: Micro SD playback, with soundscapes preloaded on the card.
  • Timer: 30 minutes, one hour, or two hours.
  • Battery: Up to 10 hours, as reported in the review, charged over USB-C.

Battery and timer figures come from the review and should be checked against the seller’s current specifications before you buy.

What it does well

The reviewer found the speaker well suited to ambient sound: white noise, rain, and other background audio that does not need to be understood. With the head on the pillow, the sound was audible to the listener. The reviewer said that once the head was lifted, the sound was not audible to a roommate, which is the main reason someone sharing a bed or room might choose this format over a speaker on the nightstand.

Where it falls short

Sound quality is the main limit. The reviewer found the audio too muffled for guided meditation, breathwork instructions, or sleep stories. If the goal is to follow spoken words in the dark, this speaker is likely to disappoint. Ambient audio is the stronger use case.

Sleep position and pillow material also matter:

  • Side sleepers were the better fit, according to the reviewer. Back sleepers may hear the sound less clearly.
  • Thick foam, especially memory foam, absorbs too much sound. The review warns against it.
  • Feather or down, polyester fill, and cotton fill pillows were the materials the reviewer reported as compatible.

Do not assume the speaker will work with every pillow. Test it with your own pillow before relying on it for the whole night.

Price and availability

The review gives a full price of $59.99 and a sale price of $49.99 at Jabees, and it links Amazon listings that were on sale at the time of writing. Prices and stock change frequently, so check the live product page before buying. The $50 figure in the headline reflects the sale price, not the full price.

The PEACE Duo is one of several products that solve the same problem in different ways. The table below compares the models mentioned in the sources. Where a detail was not published in the source, the cell says so.

The Sleeper Speaker’s manufacturer says its design is comfortable and gentle on the ears and ear wax. Those are the manufacturer’s claims. They have not been independently verified, and they should not be read as proof that the product prevents ear problems. The Soundcore figures are manufacturer estimates for comfort and battery life, not measured results for your ears. The Avantree is the wired option in this group; its 1.8 cm thickness is the manufacturer’s stated figure.

Choosing between earbuds and a pillow speaker

Use these questions to decide which format fits your sleep:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do you need to wear something in or over the ear? If not, a pillow speaker removes that source of discomfort.
  • What is your usual sleep position? Side sleepers are the reviewer’s better match for the PEACE Duo.
  • What is your pillow made of? Thick memory foam is a poor fit for under-pillow audio.
  • Do you want to hear speech, or only background sound? Ambient audio works better than spoken content.
  • Does someone share your bed or room? The reviewer reported that the sound was not audible to a roommate once the head was lifted.
  • Does the timer, battery life, and return policy match your routine? Confirm these before buying.

What the evidence covers

The comfort result in this story is one reviewer’s personal experience over a little more than three weeks. No independent clinical study was located for it, and the sources do not establish that a pillow speaker relieves ear pain for other people. If your ears hurt from earbuds, a clinician can examine them. A change to your listening setup may help, but it does not replace an assessment of persistent pain.

The battery, timer, and price figures are product details from the review and the manufacturers, not population statistics.

The review’s own subtitle states it plainly: “I tested the Jabees PEACE Duo Pillow Speaker for over 3 weeks and while I no longer have to wear painful earbuds to bed, this speaker isn’t for everyone.” That qualification is the most useful guide to whether this product fits your sleep.

The Bottom Line

A pillow speaker such as the Jabees PEACE Duo can suit a side sleeper who wants ambient sound without earbuds or a partner’s disturbance. It is a poor choice for spoken content, thick memory-foam pillows, or anyone who needs a clinical answer to ear pain.
