From Error Logs to Past Fixes with Hindsight Recall

Can you search past fixes from an error log? Yes, if incidents were retained in a memory bank. Here is how the recall workflow runs, what to store, and how to validate matches.

Yes, with two conditions. A query can only return a past fix if someone stored that fix in a memory bank, and whatever comes back is a lead to check, not a verified remedy. The pattern works like this: capture each resolved incident, pass a new error trace to Hindsight’s recall() call as the query, read the matches, and then test the proposed fix against the system as it is now.

How the workflow fits together

The pattern treats incident history as a memory that can be searched at the moment a new failure appears. It has five steps, and most of the effort sits in the first one.

  1. Capture the incident when it closes. Store the exact error text, the service and version, the environment, any recent change, the fix that was applied, and how the team confirmed it worked.
  2. Retain it in a dedicated memory bank. Use one stable bank identifier for incident knowledge so that every later query searches the same place.
  3. Recall against the new error trace. Pass the raw trace as the query, along with the bank identifier and a result limit.
  4. Read the matches with their context. Check when each past incident happened, where, and what was done, not only how similar the text looks.
  5. Validate before acting. Confirm that the conditions behind the old fix still hold on the current system.

Passing an error trace to recall

A published walkthrough of this pattern describes a Python function that wraps Hindsight’s recall() call. It sends the error trace as the query, names the memory bank, and caps the number of results, then returns the matches to a DevOps pipeline agent. The snippet below follows that description. It has not been run against a live bank, and you should confirm the client constructor and the shape of returned results in the current SDK documentation before relying on it.

from hindsight_client import Hindsight

def find_past_fixes(client: Hindsight, error_trace: str,
                    bank_id: str = 'devops-incidents', top_k: int = 5):
    """Return stored incident memories that resemble this trace."""
    return client.recall(bank_id=bank_id, query=error_trace, limit=top_k)

# Create the client from the API URL and token in your environment,
# as your SDK documents.
# client = ...

error = """Container payments-api-7f9d was OOMKilled (Exit Code 137)
after deploy 4.12.3 at 02:10 UTC"""

results = find_past_fixes(client, error)

Three parameters do the work. bank_id chooses which memory bank is searched, so a wrong or changing identifier silently searches the wrong history. query carries the error text itself, which is why preserving that text at capture time matters. limit controls how many candidates come back. The walkthrough says this approach brings synonym matching and less noise than plain string search. That is the author’s description of the example, not a measured result.

What recall does under the hood

Hindsight’s official overview describes recall() as running four retrieval strategies in parallel:

  • Semantic search, which matches meaning rather than exact words.
  • Keyword search (BM25), which rewards exact term matches such as a specific exception name.
  • Graph search, which follows relationships between stored entities.
  • Temporal search, which takes time into account.

The overview then fuses the ranks from these strategies, reranks the candidates, and selects context to fit a token budget. The point of running several strategies is that operational errors rarely match on wording alone. A keyword hit on a precise code such as Exit Code 137 and a semantic hit on a description of memory exhaustion can point to the same past incident from different angles.

The walkthrough states that an error with Exit Code 137 and OOMKilled will match in a given bank. The official documentation supports the reasoning for looking beyond exact strings, but it does not verify that specific match. Test it with your own past incidents before you assume it.

Retain, recall, and reflect are different operations

Hindsight documents three distinct operations. Retain places information into a memory bank. Recall finds stored memories relevant to a query. Reflect reasons over what it finds to produce an answer. A memory bank holds facts, entities, observations, and knowledge pages.

For triage, recall is the step that returns the evidence you can inspect directly. A reflected answer is a synthesis built from those memories, so treat it as one more hypothesis to check against the raw matches. Anything you never retained cannot be recalled, which makes capture the real design problem.

What a team must retain for incidents to be retrievable

The table below lists the fields that make a stored incident useful later. The values are illustrative, not drawn from a real system.

Field Why it matters for later retrieval Illustrative value
Exact error text Keyword and semantic matching both depend on the original wording; a paraphrase loses signal. Exit Code 137, OOMKilled
Timestamp Supports temporal retrieval and tells you whether an old fix is recent enough to trust. 2026-09-14 02:10 UTC
Service and version Separates identical-looking errors that come from different releases. payments-api 4.12.3
Environment A fix that worked in staging may not apply in production. Production, one region
Recent change Often the trigger; a match without it may be a coincidence. Cache size changed in the prior deploy
Resolution steps This is the content that gets reused. Raised memory limit and restarted the deployment
Verification Shows the fix worked rather than the error going quiet. Error rate back to baseline after one hour
Recurrence Records whether the fix held, which is the most valuable signal for later matches. Not recurred in the following 30 days

Preserve structured metadata alongside the free text. Operators can then compare environment, version, and timestamps directly instead of inferring them from prose.

Treat every match as a lead

Semantic similarity shows that two pieces of text resemble each other. It does not show that two incidents share a root cause. Before applying a recalled fix, work through the following checks:

  • Compare the full error trace with the match, not only the top-ranked summary.
  • Confirm the service version and environment match the stored incident.
  • Check whether the preconditions of the old fix still hold, such as a configuration value that has since changed.
  • Review changes made since the stored incident, including deploys, dependency updates, and infrastructure changes.
  • Check the recurrence and verification fields to see whether the fix held in practice.
  • Record whether the operator accepted, rejected, or modified the suggestion, so the bank learns from the outcome.

A simple decision rule follows from these checks. If the match agrees on error, version, and environment and the preconditions still hold, try the fix in staging first. If the match agrees on error but differs on version or environment, investigate the difference before acting. If nothing relevant comes back, treat the failure as new, work it through normally, and retain the outcome afterward.

Choosing where the memory bank runs

The official overview lists three deployment options. The described workflow needs no special hardware; it needs a memory bank and a way to reach it. The overview does not provide a complete cost or security comparison, so the table lists what each option makes your team responsible for.

Option Who operates it What your team must decide
Hindsight Cloud (managed) The vendor operates the service Data handling and residency requirements, ongoing cost, and dependence on the vendor. The cloud offering has advertised free credits; confirm current terms directly before relying on them.
Embedded local use Your team, alongside your own code Whether a local footprint meets your persistence, access, and availability needs.
Your own cluster Your team, on your infrastructure Upgrades, backups, access control, and scaling.

Choose based on your data-control requirements, how much operational work your team can take on, and how much integration effort you can absorb. Those trade-offs depend on your environment, so compare the options against your own constraints.

Speed claims need a measurement

The walkthrough reports triage dropping from more than 20 minutes to under a second. That is the author’s published claim, and it has not been independently verified. Query latency and mean time to resolution are different measures. Recall can be fast while a human still spends most of the time validating a candidate.

To test the claim in your own setting, define a baseline from past incidents, such as the median time to an accepted fix. Assemble a fixed incident set. Measure recall latency separately from total resolution time. Count how often the top match was the fix that was ultimately accepted, and record the human validation step as part of the timing.

Hindsight’s overview also publishes benchmark figures, including 94.6% on LongMemEval-S. The overview gives no publication year for these figures and no full methodology. They measure general memory retrieval, not incident triage, so they do not establish how the approach performs on your error logs.
