1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft’s documentation does not explain error 0x80040304 for the Windows Backup app, so there is no verified, error-specific fix to apply. What you can do is identify which backup feature is showing the error, then follow Microsoft’s general guidance for that feature. Below is how to make that identification, the checks that apply to each tool, and where the available evidence stops.
What the code does and does not tell you
Searching for the exact code turns up a third-party article dated September 17, 2026, which says the code can appear in both Windows Backup and File History. That article recommends unlinking the Microsoft account, clearing caches, deleting stored credentials, resetting the Microsoft Store cache, or changing File History destination settings. Microsoft’s documentation does not corroborate those causes or recommend those steps, so treat them as unverified. Several of them change account links or stored credentials, which is far more disruptive than the checks below. If you try any of them, back up important files first.

Microsoft Open Specifications also lists 0x80040304 as “UnexpectedType,” but in an Exchange protocol context. That definition describes a different protocol and does not establish what the code means in Windows Backup, so it should not be applied to this problem.
Step 1: Identify which backup tool shows the error
“Windows backup” can refer to two separate features. Their troubleshooting paths are different, so start by noting exactly where the error appears.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Plug-and-Play Expandability】 With no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use in Windows(For Mac,first format the drive and select the ExFat format.
- 【Fast Data Transfers 】The external hard drives with the USB 3.0 cable to provide super fast transfer speed. The theoretical read speed is as high as 110MB/s-133MB/s, and the write speed is as high as 103MB/s.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
| Item | Windows Backup app | File History |
|---|---|---|
| What it protects | Certain files, folders, settings, credentials, and apps, sent to the cloud (Microsoft Support, KB5032038) | Files saved to an external drive or network location (Microsoft Support, Reconnect Your File History Drive in Windows) |
| Destination | Cloud, with OneDrive involved in OneDrive-related backup errors | External drive or network location |
| Account context | Personal Microsoft account used with Windows; not supported for Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory users | Not stated in the Microsoft File History article reviewed |
| Where settings live | Settings > Accounts > Windows backup | Control Panel > System and Security > File History |
If the message appears in the Windows Backup app or on the Windows backup page in Settings, follow the Windows Backup section. If it appears on the File History page, follow the File History section. Do not mix the two.
If the error appears in Windows Backup
Confirm the account type
- Windows Backup is described by Microsoft as primarily designed for consumer devices that use a personal Microsoft account.
- Microsoft says backed-up information is associated with the Microsoft account used with Windows. Confirm that you are signed in with that account.
- If you use a work or school account on Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory, Microsoft says the app is not supported for those users. Contact your IT administrator.
- A Microsoft account blocked by Group Policy can prevent the app from running at all. This is also a question for your administrator on managed devices.
Check OneDrive
Microsoft’s consumer backup guide says a OneDrive error during backup can occur when you are not signed in to OneDrive, when your OneDrive storage is full, or when there is another OneDrive problem. Check these in order:
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Confirm that OneDrive is signed in with the Microsoft account you use with Windows.
- Check your OneDrive storage. If it is full, free space or add storage before running the backup again.
- If sign-in and storage look correct, check the OneDrive status in the notification area for any sync problem.
These are preliminary checks drawn from general guidance. Microsoft’s documentation does not link them to code 0x80040304 specifically.
Review the backup settings
Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and confirm which items are enabled. Microsoft’s settings-backup documentation notes that organizational policy can control these options, so on a managed device you may not be able to change them locally.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

If the error appears in File History
Microsoft’s File History guidance covers external drives and network locations. Work through the matching case:
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > File History.
- For an external drive, make sure the drive is connected to the PC and then wait for the next scheduled backup, or select Run now.
- For a network location, reselect the network location from the File History page. Then wait for the scheduled backup or select Run now.
Microsoft’s File History steps do not include changing drive letters, deleting the File History configuration, or replacing a drive, and nothing in the documentation reviewed links those actions to this error.
Rank #4
- USB-C and USB 3.1 compatible
- Innovative style with refined metal cover
- Password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- Formatted for Windows
- 3-year manufacturer's limited warranty
Before you try any recovery option
Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive recovery option that applies to your situation, and backing up important files before recovering. Its Recovery options in Windows page notes that the options differ in effect. For example, reinstalling Windows through Windows Update on supported Windows 11 versions keeps files, apps, and settings, while other options can remove or roll back changes. Do not use a reset or reinstall as the first response to a backup-app error.
