I Stopped Uploading Research to NotebookLM: What a Local LLM Can and Can’t Replace in Gemini Notebook

A local model can keep your documents out of Google's hosted notebook, but it doesn't rebuild citations, audio outputs or source handling by itself. Here is what each part does and what to test.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving document questions from Google’s hosted notebook to a model on your own machine can keep those files out of Google’s service. It does not, by itself, rebuild what Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) offers. A local model runtime answers questions only from the text you give it, and the source handling, citation display, and audio or slide outputs that make the hosted product convenient each have to be assembled separately. Whether the local version matches the hosted one depends on the parts you add, the settings you lock down, and the documents you test with.

What Gemini Notebook actually promises

NotebookLM is now part of Google’s Gemini line. Google’s Workspace product page says “NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook,” so this article uses Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) for the hosted product. The product label may change again, so check Google’s current page before you publish or cite it.

Google describes the product as source-grounded. You select the sources in a notebook, and the summaries, answers, and idea generation are built from those sources. Answers can show citations pointing back to the original material. Google’s product announcement also tells users to check the AI’s responses against the original source material. That caution comes from Google itself: “While NotebookLM’s source-grounding does seem to reduce the risk of model ‘hallucinations,’ it’s always important to fact-check the AI’s responses against your original source material.”

The Workspace page lists these source types: Google Docs, Google Slides, PDFs, text and Markdown files, web URLs, pasted text, public YouTube URLs, and audio files. It states a per-source ceiling of 500,000 words or 200 MB for uploaded files. Those are the page’s figures as of October 2026, and plans and product surfaces can differ.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

The Help Center lists the outputs built on top of those sources: Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, flashcards or quizzes, infographics, slide decks, and reports. The Help Center establishes that these features exist. It does not establish that every account gets identical access, limits, or output quality.

Two other Google surfaces are easy to confuse with this one. The broader Gemini Apps notebook feature can include web searches and Gemini tools in notebook chats, and its source count depends on plan, with up to 600 sources stated on its Help page. Google Cloud’s Enterprise offering is separate again: it holds data in the customer’s Cloud project, limits sharing to that project, and analyzes uploaded or imported documents as static copies. Don’t carry limits or privacy terms from one of these surfaces over to another.

What a local LLM stack is made of

“Local LLM” describes where a model runs. It doesn’t describe a research tool. A working replacement for a notebook usually needs four layers:

Sensitive workloads can remain on-device, while cloud AI adds larger models and deeper reasoning when needed.
  • A runtime that loads a model and answers prompts. Ollama is a common choice; its documentation covers model storage on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and it lets you move the model directory with the OLLAMA_MODELS setting.
  • A model whose size and quantization fit your memory. The model’s own maximum context is separate from the runtime’s default.
  • An ingestion and retrieval layer that reads your files, splits them into passages, indexes them, and passes the relevant passages to the model. Ollama does not provide this layer on its own, so you need a separate application or script for it.
  • A front end that shows answers with the passages they came from. This is where citation quality is decided, and it is also where a plugin or sync feature can send data somewhere you didn’t intend.

Each layer has its own failure modes, so a local setup can be strong in one place and weak in another. A runtime can run a good model on your machine and still give poor answers if the retrieval layer hands it the wrong passages.

Where your documents actually go

Privacy is the reason most people switch, so it deserves the most precision. The statements below come from the sources named, and each covers only that product.

Google’s hosted notebook

Google says uploads in Gemini Notebook stay private unless you share the notebook, and that uploaded data is not used to train its models. That is a statement about Google’s handling of your data within that product. It is not a claim that no processing occurs. If you stop uploading, documents already in a notebook remain there until you delete them, so check that deletion is complete for files you no longer want Google to hold.

Ollama’s local mode

Ollama’s privacy documentation says local execution keeps prompts and data from being visible to Ollama. Its policy also covers cloud-hosted model requests, which it says are processed transiently, and limited usage metadata. The FAQ documents a setting that disables Ollama’s cloud features: OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 as an environment variable, or disable_ollama_cloud: true in configuration. Check the exact syntax for your installed version, since names and locations can change.

What can break the local promise

  • Changing the server’s bind address. Ollama’s server binds to 127.0.0.1 by default. A change that exposes it to your network means other devices can send it prompts.
  • Running a front end, browser extension, or chat app that calls a cloud API or syncs your chats to a service.
  • Using a cloud-hosted model. Those requests leave your machine even though you launched them from a local tool.
  • Syncing your model or index folder to a cloud drive, which copies your documents even if the model never sends them out.

Local processing is not the same as an air-gapped or secure environment. It reduces one data path. It does not make your computer safe from malware, shared accounts, or backups you have not reviewed.

A quick configuration check

  1. Set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 or disable_ollama_cloud: true and restart Ollama.
  2. Confirm the server is still bound to 127.0.0.1, using your operating system’s network tools to see which address the port listens on.
  3. Turn off cloud sync for the folders holding your documents, index, and model files, or exclude them.
  4. Disconnect or disable any front end plugin that makes outbound requests, then confirm it still answers from local files.

Hardware: what you need and what you don’t

Ollama’s hardware list includes NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 cards among supported NVIDIA GPUs, several AMD GPU families, Apple Metal acceleration, and Vulkan. That confirms the card is supported on Ollama’s documented software stack. It does not establish speed, the VRAM any given model needs, or whether the card is a good buy. A GPU is not required. Ollama’s FAQ describes CPU inference as a valid path, and inference can use system memory, GPU memory, or a mix of the two.

Memory decides which models load comfortably and how many run at once. Ollama’s FAQ says available memory affects concurrent loading. The default context window is 4,096 tokens, and you can change it with OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH. This is a runtime default, not a claim about each model’s maximum. A longer context lets the model see more of your sources at once, but it costs more memory and time, so raise it only after you know your machine can handle it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Can a local model answer across PDFs and cite its sources?

The runtime alone can’t do this. A local model answers from whatever text you put in the prompt. Whether it can answer across several PDFs, and whether its citations point to the right passages, depends entirely on your retrieval layer and front end.

  • Factual extraction: ask for one specific figure or date that appears in a single source. Compare the answer to the original page.
  • Cross-document synthesis: ask a question whose answer requires combining two or more sources, then check that each claim maps to a source.
  • Conflict finding: give it two documents that disagree and ask it to name the disagreement. A model that smooths over conflicts is a warning sign.
  • Citation check: open every cited passage and confirm it supports the sentence it’s attached to. Count the citations that point to the wrong place or to nothing.

Save each prompt, the model identifier, the settings, and the output. Hosted and local answers can then be compared against the same passages rather than against your impression of which one sounds better.

Is a local setup as good as Gemini Notebook?

No independent comparison establishes that. Google describes internal evaluation categories for grounded Q&A, multilingual support, long-document analysis, artifact creation, and web research, but the published material does not give comparative scores against any local setup. Ollama’s documentation covers its runtime, not the quality of a research workflow built on it. Any claim about accuracy, speed, or cost has to come from a test you can describe and reproduce.

The gap is largest in the features the hosted product bundles: audio and video overviews, web research inside a notebook, and sharing. A local stack can reproduce some of these with separate tools, but each one is a separate project to build and maintain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decision rule

  • Stay with the hosted notebook if you want audio or video overviews, web research in the same workspace, sharing with collaborators, and no maintenance work. Your main task is to check cited passages against the originals.
  • Consider a local setup if the documents are sensitive enough that you want to control every data path, you accept that the citation and output layers are yours to build, and your machine has enough memory to load the model you plan to use.
  • Don’t switch on the strength of the headline. A local runtime is one part of a research tool. Keep the hosted version available until your local workflow passes the same tests on your own documents.

A reproducible setup record

If you publish results from your own local workflow, record enough that someone else can rerun it:

  • Machine, operating system, RAM, and GPU or VRAM
  • Runtime version and exact model identifier, with quantization if used
  • Retrieval or indexing application, its settings, and chunk size
  • Whether cloud features are disabled, and how you confirmed the bind address
  • Source count, formats, and dates
  • The exact prompts and the four check tasks above
  • How you verified citations, and every failure you found

Without this record, a claim that a local model “does everything” can’t be tested by anyone else, including you.

Ollama’s documentation and Google’s product pages change, so confirm the setting names, the source limits, and the product label on the day you rely on them.
