Can ordinary automation satisfy a human-in-the-loop gate without crossing the interaction boundary it is meant to enforce? Keniel Zep’s account of a local Python project shows why a gate and its tests can both appear to work while failing to answer that question. The crucial distinction was between standard streams that pytest reported as non-TTY and a controlling terminal that the process could still open—and between testing a real interaction path and replacing it with a mock.
What was the gate supposed to prove?
The intended rule was that an operation should require confirmation through a terminal, rather than accept identifiers supplied by an automated caller. That sounds straightforward, but the implementation’s meaning depends on exactly what it checks and where confirmation comes from.

Zep describes an earlier check based on stdin.isatty() and stdout.isatty(), with confirmation read separately from /dev/tty. In the author’s reproduced default pytest capture, the standard streams reported that they were not terminals while /dev/tty remained openable. Those results are not contradictory: the standard streams and the process’s controlling terminal are distinct interfaces, and their availability need not match.

That mismatch created the central problem. A check on one interface did not necessarily describe the path used to obtain confirmation on another.

How the gate changed—and what each version could establish
| Approach | Condition checked | Did the test reach the real interaction path? | What it could establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caller-supplied identifiers | Values passed into a function | No; the test could provide the values directly. | That the function handled supplied values, not that a person had interacted. |
| Separate standard-stream predicates | stdin.isatty() and stdout.isatty() |
Not necessarily; confirmation was read from /dev/tty. |
Whether those standard streams reported terminal status, not whether the confirmation path was available. |
| Controlling-terminal check | Whether the controlling terminal could be opened and used for confirmation | Only if the test exercised the unmocked terminal-reading path. | Terminal availability for that path—not human identity. |
The table describes the versions in Zep’s project, not a universal implementation recipe. The author reports that a broad except OSError also treated an io.UnsupportedOperation case as though no human were present. The revised handling narrowed the errno cases, and the function was renamed from require_human() to require_controlling_terminal(). The new name better matched what the check actually observed.
Why passing tests did not mean the control worked
In Zep’s account, the tests changed along with the implementation in a way that kept avoiding the boundary. One version accepted typed identifiers as function parameters. In a later version, approval tests replaced the terminal-reading function. Both arrangements could verify behavior after values were available, but neither demonstrated that the real terminal path worked.

The author reports a full suite result of 131 tests passed and 25 subtests passed. A mutation that deleted one explicit guard still left all 131 tests passing. That result does not mean every test was useless; it shows that this particular guard was not distinguished by the suite.
Mutation testing asks a practical question: if a meaningful part of the implementation is broken or removed, does the test suite fail? Zep reports these results for the project’s v3 suite:

What changed when a test crossed the boundary?
Zep reports that a test calling the actual terminal path caught a broken version that used open("/dev/tty", "r+"); restoring that broken behavior made four tests fail. The reported v3 suite included five tests using a pseudo-terminal and one additional test that opened /dev/tty in-process.
The useful principle is not that every test must use a pseudo-terminal. It is that at least some tests need to exercise the unmocked boundary whose behavior the control depends on. A mocked reader can still be useful for ordinary approval logic, but it cannot stand in for a test of opening and reading from the actual terminal path.

- Use a test that exercises the real terminal-reading path to check that the gate and confirmation work together.
- Use mutations or deliberately broken variants to see whether important guards are actually enforced by the suite.
What a terminal check does—and does not—prove
A controlling terminal is not a person, an identity, or a security credential. Zep notes that a process with access to pseudo-terminal facilities can satisfy a terminal path. The narrower claim supported by this design is that the revised check blocked the author’s ordinary noninteractive automation path from passing merely by supplying values.

The post quotes the machine’s sudoers(5) manual on requiretty: “If set, sudo will only run when the user is logged in to a real tty. When this flag is set, sudo can only be run from a login session and not via other means such as cron(8) or cgi-bin scripts. This flag is off by default.” That description concerns a login-session context; it should not be read as proof that a terminal establishes that a human is present.
As Zep puts it: “If a rule in your project is enforced by someone remembering it, it is a request, not a control.” The practical implication is to define the boundary precisely, enforce it in the path that matters, and avoid naming the check as if it proves more than it does.
Why test isolation mattered too
The interaction boundary was not the only failure mode in the project. Zep reports that earlier tests wrote to production state. The author’s later response was to use an autouse fixture that redirected state paths to a temporary directory by default, reserving live-state tests for those explicitly marked to use it.

Defaulting to isolated temporary state makes that safer path automatic, while an explicit marker makes tests that need live state visible.
Quick Recap
How to evaluate a similar gate
- State the claim narrowly. Decide whether the requirement is terminal availability, a human confirmation step, or actual identity verification. A terminal check alone supports only the first of those claims.
- Align the check with the interaction. If confirmation comes from a controlling terminal, do not treat the status of separate standard streams as a substitute without verifying that their behavior matches the intended environment.
- Test the real boundary at least once. Keep mocks for logic that benefits from them, but include tests that use the unmocked path the control depends on.
- Try meaningful mutations. Remove a guard or restore a known-broken path and check whether the suite fails. A mutation that survives points to a test gap, even when the normal run is green.
- Isolate side effects by default. Redirect state paths to temporary locations automatically, and make any test that must use live state opt in explicitly.
