The right real-time AI avatar platform depends on whether you need a conversational agent, a live avatar renderer for an agent you already run, or simply a prerecorded avatar video. HeyGen LiveAvatar and Synthesia Interactive Avatars have the clearest documented details among the six options here; the available information for Tavus CVI, D-ID Agents, Simli, and Liforma is less conclusive. Treat this as a use-case comparison, not a tested ranking. Product terms below reflect vendor information available on October 5, 2026, and may change.
What counts as a real-time avatar platform?
A real-time avatar platform streams an avatar during an interactive session, typically in response to an agent’s conversation. That is different from generating a video in advance and delivering a finished file. A prerecorded video can be useful for explainers or personalized clips, but it does not by itself provide a live, turn-taking experience.

There is also an important difference between a platform that supplies the conversational loop and one that renders an avatar for an agent you operate. The latter may expect your application to handle the language model (LLM), speech recognition, session logic, and sometimes text-to-speech (TTS). Before comparing prices, determine which side of that boundary each product covers.

| Platform | What the available information supports | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| HeyGen LiveAvatar | HeyGen describes a real-time interactive platform using WebRTC that can connect to your LLM. It has separate plans and credits. | Current credit conversion, session-duration limit, plan availability, concurrency, and the exact integration mode you will use. |
| Synthesia Interactive Avatars | Synthesia documents an avatar-rendering service for a customer-managed agent, with LiveKit sessions and optional built-in TTS. | Current billed rate, whether LiveKit and Python fit your stack, session-management needs, and the documented avatar and framing limitations. |
| Tavus CVI | An official pricing page is available, but current capabilities and terms are not established in enough detail here to compare them reliably. | Supported agent architecture, pricing unit, usage limits, transport, concurrency, and session duration in current official documentation. |
| D-ID Agents | D-ID’s official API reference supports agent creation; the available details do not settle the product’s current live-streaming behavior or commercial limits. | Whether the specific Agents offering supports your required live stream, its billing model, limits, and integration requirements. |
| Simli | Official developer documentation exists, but the available details do not establish its exact feature set, limits, or pricing. | Input and output contract, supported integrations, concurrency, billing, and how the avatar behaves between turns. |
| Liforma | A September 2026 vendor-authored overview names Liforma, but that alone does not establish product capabilities or support comparative claims. | Current first-party product documentation, supported deployment model, pricing, limits, and integration details. |
For Tavus, D-ID, Simli, and Liforma, “not established” does not mean a feature is absent. It means you should get the answer from current vendor documentation or sales support rather than treating an unverified comparison as a specification.

HeyGen LiveAvatar: a documented WebRTC option with its own credits
HeyGen describes LiveAvatar as a real-time interactive platform using WebRTC and says developers can connect their own LLM. It is separate from HeyGen’s standard prerecorded video product and uses a separate credit system.
HeyGen Help Center information accessed in 2026 lists one credit at US$0.10, with one credit corresponding to 30 seconds in Full mode or one minute in Lite mode. It lists Essential at US$99 per month with 1,100 credits and sessions up to 20 minutes, and Business at US$475 per month with 6,000 credits and sessions up to 60 minutes. These are vendor plan terms, not independent performance measurements. The Help Center also says the US$19-per-month Starter plan has been unavailable to new customers since September 25, 2026.

Synthesia’s operational documentation, accessed in 2026, states a charge of US$0.10 per avatar-use minute and a limit of 100 concurrent sessions on paid plans. Its product page displays US$0.12 per minute. Those official pages conflict, so neither figure should be treated as a settled rate without confirmation from Synthesia or in-account billing information.
The operational documentation also says there is no no-code embed, LiveKit is the only transport, and Synthesia does not provide a vendor session list, transcript, recording, or webhook system. It supports synthetic and personal avatars; framing is bust-only, without gesture, hand, or full-body controls. These constraints matter if you need a managed monitoring layer, a different transport, or expressive full-body performance.

How to choose between a bundled agent and a renderer
Choose a bundled conversational platform when
- You want the vendor to supply more of the interactive experience rather than wiring every agent component yourself.
- You need a defined integration path and can accept its supported transports, session model, and customization boundaries.
- You have verified what the platform actually bundles: “agent” can mean different things, and an avatar product may still rely on your LLM or speech services.
Choose a renderer for your own agent when
- You already operate the LLM, speech recognition, and conversation logic, or need to retain control over them.
- Your engineering team can implement the required SDK or transport and manage session state, failures, and observability.
- You have checked whether TTS is included or must come from your existing voice stack.
The available evidence most clearly places Synthesia in the customer-managed-agent category. HeyGen says LiveAvatar can connect to your LLM, so clarify which conversation components you must supply for your intended integration rather than assuming it is a fully bundled agent.
Build a realistic cost and capacity comparison
Monthly subscription prices alone are not comparable when one vendor bills by credits, another by avatar-use minute, and a third has terms you have not yet verified. Build a forecast around your expected active sessions and confirm:
- The billable unit: avatar-use time, session time, credits, or another measure.
- How the unit converts in the exact mode you plan to use, including idle time, pauses, and reconnects.
- Whether the stated plan price recurs monthly, what is included, and how additional usage is billed.
- Concurrent-session ceilings, maximum session duration, and what happens when a limit is reached.
- Whether there are separate costs for LLM, speech recognition, TTS, LiveKit, storage, or other services in your architecture.
Do not infer a platform’s concurrency or overage rules from a listed session-duration limit. They are different constraints and should be confirmed separately.
Test the experience in the environment you will ship
No consistent independent benchmark establishes which of these six platforms has the lowest latency, best lip sync, or most reliable turn-taking. A vendor specification cannot answer how the experience will feel on your target devices and network, with your voice stack and agent configuration. Test a representative workflow before committing.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the integration path. Build a small session using the intended browser or client, transport, SDK, LLM, speech recognition, and TTS configuration.
- Measure end-to-end response time. Record the interval from the user finishing a turn to the avatar beginning its reply, and note network and device conditions.
- Try interruptions and rapid turns. Speak over the avatar, interrupt it, and send follow-up turns quickly. Check whether speech stops promptly and the conversation recovers coherently.
- Inspect synchronization and continuity. Check lip sync during speech and what appears between turns, including pauses or connection interruptions.
- Exercise operational limits. Test realistic concurrency and session duration, then confirm how errors, reconnects, transcripts, recordings, and webhooks are handled by the vendor or your own application.
- Estimate usage from observed behavior. Apply the confirmed billing rules to realistic sessions, including idle time and retries, instead of extrapolating from a headline rate.
Questions to get answered before implementation
- Which components are vendor-managed, and which must your application provide?
- Which transports, SDKs, browsers, and deployment environments are supported for your product tier?
- What are the current per-minute or credit rules, concurrency cap, and maximum session length?
- Can you use stock, synthetic, or personal avatars, and what consent or approval requirements apply?
- How are session state, transcripts, recordings, webhooks, errors, and support handled?
- What does the vendor guarantee about availability or response time, and what is merely a product description?
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
