Four small terminal techniques can make routine work feel more responsive: suspend and resume a running command, watch output refresh automatically, see data move through a pipeline, or run independent tasks concurrently. The examples below are adaptable demonstrations; shell behavior, installed utilities, and the job itself determine what will work safely.
1. Pause and resume a foreground command with Bash job control
If a command is running in the foreground and you need the prompt back briefly, Bash job control lets you suspend it without terminating it. Press Ctrl-Z, then use bg to continue the stopped job in the background. Use jobs to inspect the shell’s job list and fg to bring a job back to the foreground.

fgBash associates jobs with pipelines and tracks them for commands such as jobs. See the Bash Reference Manual’s job-control section for details. Ctrl-Z suspends rather than ends the foreground job, but suspension can be unsafe if a command is in the middle of a sensitive operation. This is Bash behavior; other shells may offer similar controls with differences.
2. Refresh a status check with watch
watch reruns a command and displays its output repeatedly. For example, this refreshes a directory listing once per second and highlights differences:

watch -n 1 -d 'ls -lh ~/Downloads'The changing display can show a new file or a changed listing without repeatedly retyping the command. The watch manual documents a default interval of two seconds and gives watch -d ls -l as an example. It displays the first screenful of output and keeps running until interrupted; press Ctrl-C to stop it. Availability and options depend on the installed implementation.
3. See data move through a pipeline with pv
pv monitors data flowing through a pipe and can display information such as elapsed time, percentage, throughput, amount transferred, and estimated time remaining. For example, an archive pipeline can pass its stream through pv before compression:

tar -cf - project/ | pv | gzip > project.tar.gzThis offers visible feedback while data moves instead of leaving you with no indication of pipeline progress. The pv manual describes its pipeline-monitoring features. pv must be installed, and progress details depend in part on whether the input size is known. This example writes project.tar.gz in the current directory, so check that destination and any existing file before running it. The same approach can help with long transfers or archive pipelines, but it does not guarantee faster processing.
4. Run independent repeated tasks concurrently with GNU Parallel
GNU Parallel takes input and builds and executes shell command lines in parallel. The GNU Parallel documentation describes it as a tool to “build and execute shell command lines from standard input in parallel.” A simple example applies an image conversion command to matching JPEG filenames:

This example assumes ImageMagick is installed and that the generated PNG names are suitable for your files. GNU Parallel can process lists of files and can replace some shell-loop or xargs workflows; consult the GNU Parallel manual for its syntax and installation guidance.
Concurrency is useful only when the tasks can run independently and your machine and other services can handle the extra work. Shared output files can collide, and rate-limited services may respond poorly to simultaneous requests. Parallel execution is not automatically faster for every workload.

These tools address different kinds of waiting: job control gives you a way to manage a command, watch automates repeated checks, pv makes pipeline progress visible, and GNU Parallel dispatches independent work concurrently. Choose based on what the command is doing, what your shell or system has installed, and what would happen if the job were interrupted or split up.
