Apurva Aggarwal built Argus Friend Brief to turn a complex stock-research dashboard into a plain-language briefing for his father. The application reads one company’s structured evidence, runs a local Gemma 3 4B model through Ollama, and produces a cited explanation organized around five questions: what changed, why it matters, what supports the bull case, what supports the bear case, and what to monitor next.
Aggarwal describes the project in his October 2, 2026 DEV Community article. His claims describe his implementation and testing; they are not an independent security, privacy, performance or investment-quality audit.

What Argus Friend Brief does
The underlying Argus dashboard follows 53 companies across AI infrastructure, semiconductors, power, cooling, networking and emerging compute. It combines prices, technical metrics, peer-relative valuation, news, SEC filings and bull/bear theses. That information can be useful to an experienced analyst but difficult to digest as a single narrative.
Argus Friend Brief is a translation layer rather than a stock-picking engine. Its output is intended to help a family reader connect existing evidence and understand the current state of a company. The five prompts are:

The author explicitly says the app does not generate buy, sell or hold advice, price targets or position-sizing guidance. An internal opportunity score is treated as a research-ranking signal, not expected return and not a recommendation.
How the local pipeline works
- Read the database safely. The application opens the Argus SQLite database with read-only and immutable options, reducing the chance that the briefing tool changes the source data.
- Create a sanitized snapshot. It exports the selected company’s evidence into JSON. The export includes current and prior metrics, signals, fundamentals, peer valuation, deterministic theses, recent news and SEC filings.
- Remove sensitive material. The snapshot deliberately excludes personal watchlist notes, authentication data and credentials. These are the creator’s stated exclusions, not the result of an independent privacy audit.
- Generate locally. One company’s evidence catalog is sent to Gemma 3 4B through Ollama. The model is instructed to use only that catalog and runs at temperature zero.
- Validate before display. Streamlit presents the brief, while Pydantic defines its response schema. Citation and language checks run before anything appears in the interface.
Each fact in the snapshot receives a compact evidence identifier, label, value, date and source. Generated claims must cite one to three of those identifiers, allowing a reader to reveal the cited value and source date.
Why citation validation is central
Aggarwal reports that an early real-model run returned valid JSON but mistyped long citation IDs, including during a repair attempt. He replaced them with shorter deterministic IDs such as NVDA.E001. According to his account, citation validation then passed more reliably.

The application also checks language that could turn a ranking signal into apparent investment advice. When the model treated the internal opportunity score too much like an investment opportunity, the author added a deterministic language guard and clarified the instruction. If an unknown citation or disallowed wording appears, the app attempts one repair. If the repaired output still fails, it shows an error instead of displaying the unsupported brief.
That fail-closed behavior is a design safeguard described by the creator, not proof that every unsupported statement would be detected. The quality of the result still depends on the underlying data, the prompt, the model and the validators.
Local inference versus a hosted model
The project’s main argument for local inference is control over where data goes. After the model is downloaded, Aggarwal says inference occurs on the user’s machine and the available data is not sent to a model provider. He also reports no per-request model API fee.

A hosted service may be more convenient or faster, but the article supplies no reproducible hardware, speed or quality comparison. The meaningful trade-off is therefore architectural: local control and a predictable inference path versus the convenience of an already-hosted system.

What users can actually try
A hosted preview contains saved, citation-validated examples for NVDA, VRT and CEG, with those examples labeled in the interface. Saved examples are not the same as fresh generation. Aggarwal says generating a new brief requires a local clone and Ollama.
The author says the committed sanitized snapshot covers all 53 active companies and was refreshed after the October 2, 2026 market close. That date makes the preview time-sensitive: prices, filings, news and signals can change after the snapshot was created.

Hardware and privacy limits
Aggarwal says the downloaded-model application can run on a laptop, but he does not specify an operating system, processor, memory amount, GPU, response speed or compatibility list. Readers should not infer that every laptop will deliver acceptable performance. Exact requirements would need to be checked against the repository and a reproducible device test.
He also describes optional Sentry tracing limited to operational metadata: latency, token counts, validation outcomes, repair attempts and generic error types. Prompts, tickers, responses, evidence, URLs, exception messages and personal notes are excluded, and tracing is a no-op without a Sentry DSN. Those are implementation claims rather than an independent audit of the deployed system.

Aggarwal reports 20 repository tests, a full-flow test with the real local model and verification of the browser interface. These figures indicate deliberate validation work on this project, but they do not establish general reliability across models, machines, datasets or future code changes.

Why this project is useful—and where it stops
The strongest idea is not that a small local model can replace an analyst. It is that structured evidence, compact citations and deterministic checks can make a technical dashboard easier for a non-specialist family member to read without handing the underlying data to a remote model provider.
The boundary matters just as much: the brief summarizes and connects supplied evidence. It does not verify filings, forecast prices, assess suitability or decide whether anyone should trade. Readers using it for investment research still need to inspect the dated sources and make their own decisions.
