But his account does not provide exact counts, define the discovery-impression denominator, or report a conversion percentage. The case shows how an agent can pay for an API response; it does not establish a typical conversion rate for agent-payment endpoints.
How an agent pays for an API call
Liem describes a machine-to-machine payment handshake using HTTP 402. An agent first requests a resource; if it has not paid, the endpoint responds with a payment challenge rather than the requested payload.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Request: The buyer agent sends an unpaid GET or POST request.
- Challenge: The endpoint returns HTTP 402 and a JSON payment specification identifying the network, asset, amount, and destination address.
- Payment: A buyer agent that understands the protocol submits the specified payment on-chain.
- Retry: The agent retries the request with a signature or other payment proof in a header.
- Verification and fulfillment: The server verifies payment before returning the requested resource.
That sequence explains how payment can happen without a person completing a checkout screen. It does not mean any AI agent can pay any endpoint: the buyer must understand the challenge, support a compatible network and asset, and be able to construct the expected retry.

What Liem reports—and what he does not
In his October 1, 2026 DEV Community account, Liem says the service was live for a month, routable and health-checked by a public agent directory, listed in a discovery index, and had completed a small number of real on-chain payments from other agents. He characterizes the funnel as a handful of paid calls compared with a much larger number of discovery impressions. Read Liem’s account on DEV Community.

The available article text gives no exact numerator or denominator, does not define what counted as an impression, and states no numeric conversion rate. “A handful” should remain qualitative; it cannot responsibly be converted into a count or percentage. Nor is this a benchmark for other endpoints: it is one first-person case report, without the figures needed to calculate a rate.
Liem says settled transaction block hashes are public and re-checkable, but the indexed article text does not show those hashes or a transaction ledger. The payment claims therefore cannot be independently counted or validated from the material available here.

- iPad to POS in Minutes: Slide in an iPad and download the included Square point of sale app to get started. No training or service visits needed.
- Your entire business in one place: Power every part of what you do, all on one device. That’s payments, your website, daily reporting, and so much more.
- No extra readers required: Super fast built-in payments mean far fewer cords, zero fears of disconnecting, and a cleaner counter from here on out.
- Keep selling, even offline: Keep taking payments with offline payments even when your Wi-Fi or connectivity is down. Just reconnect to the internet within 24 hours to upload transactions. Terms and conditions apply.
- Stay powered even without power: if you need to unplug or if you lose power, Square Stand can run off a full iPad battery. iPad-powered mode only on USB-C compatible version.
Why discovery traffic may not turn into purchases
Liem’s explanation is that many agents discovering the endpoint are scanning what services exist, rather than looking for a particular service to buy. He puts it this way: “A buyer agent only pays an endpoint it has a reason to call, and most of the traffic that finds me is scanning for what is out there, not trying to buy.”

That is the author’s interpretation of his funnel, not a demonstrated cause. Without a defined impression measure, exact counts, or an experiment comparing different traffic or product approaches, the account cannot establish why the paid calls were few or how much any one factor affected conversion.

- Product Dimensions: You will receive 5 USB-C connector. Current: Maximum support 3A current; dimensions approximately 0.98x0.39 inches/25x10mm. The quantity is ample and sufficient for your daily needs.
- Reliable Materials: The USB-C adapter is made of plastic and brass, providing insulation. The metal construction is robust and stury for long-term use. It is for powering devices only and not for data transfer.
- Practical Design: This USB-C breakout features a solderless design, requiring no soldering tools. It's simple to use; a screwdriver is all you need for easy wiring, saving installation time and effort. Disassembly is also very convenient.
- Easy DIY: The loose USB-C port fix charging plug is clearly marked with positive "+" and negative "-" for easy soldering. It is compatible with USB interfaces and Type-C adapter boards.
- Versatile Use: This USB-C male to male adapter can be used to repair most USB-C devices, such as mobile phones, game consoles, tablets, speakers, LED lights, small household appliances, etc.
What the case suggests for endpoint design
Liem says that, if starting again, he would put less effort into reach and more into making the response useful before payment. He describes a free tier or sample as a way for an agent to assess quality, and says he added a free scan endpoint. These are his product lessons, not evidence that a free sample increases conversion.
A separate AWS Builder Center account about building AgentPay offers general implementation context, not independent validation of Liem’s endpoint or payment results. It highlights details that matter to both sides of an agent transaction: AWS’s AgentPay implementation account.

- Type C Male With Screw Terminal Block Cable can extend the length of the USB cable and DIY high-quality cables for data transmission and charging. The cable is 30cm long.
- USB-C Solderless terminal is fixed with screws, no soldering required. You only need to use stranded or solid wires and a small screwdriver (give screwdriver) to create custom wiring jigs. Simple and convenient, saving time and effort.
- This typec cable of 5 Pin pluggable screw terminal can connect a shielded wire, made cable has shielding function, can effectively shield the interference of external signals.
- This Type-c terminal cable plug is USB2.0, the bandwidth is 480MB/S, theoretically it can transmit 60MB of data per second (actual speed is about 20MB-60MB/S according to different cable lengths), the signal is stable and safe.
- Compact design and reliable connection are compatible with wide, suitable for mobile phones, tablets, computers and other devices with USB Type-C interfaces.
- Make the offer legible: State what the endpoint returns, what inputs it requires, and the exact price before payment.
- Make compatibility explicit: Identify supported networks and assets so a buyer can tell whether it can pay.
- Handle retries safely: Define what happens when payment succeeds but a request is retried, and protect against replaying payment proof.
- Verify before fulfillment: Confirm payment according to the endpoint’s rules before returning the paid resource.
- Give agents a way to judge value: A useful sample or free endpoint may help an agent decide whether a paid call is relevant, though its effect on sales must be measured rather than assumed.
These are practical design considerations, not a conversion formula. To report a meaningful rate, an operator would also need to define a consistent funnel—for example, what qualifies as a discovery impression and what counts as a completed paid call—and publish the corresponding counts over the same period.
