Huh? is a macOS menu bar app designed for one small meeting problem: you miss a useful detail while taking notes, then need to hear it again. Instead of recording a whole meeting, the app keeps a short rolling audio buffer and lets you replay the recent past with Option-Command-H. That is the concept described by developer Varshith V Hegde; the available evidence does not establish whether the app has since become generally available.
What Huh? does
Huh? is meant to help when a conversation has moved on before you can ask, “Sorry, can you repeat the link?” Its menu bar app keeps between 30 seconds and two minutes of recent audio in memory. Pressing Option-Command-H opens a heads-up display and plays that audio back. Hegde describes the idea this way: “You’re not deciding to record, you’re deciding to replay.”

The capture source can be one application, system-wide audio, or the microphone, according to Hegde’s September 13, 2026 DEV Community article. Playback can be slowed to 0.75x or 0.5x without changing pitch, which may make a fast name, URL, or instruction easier to catch.

Transcription is optional
The app is described as offering two on-device transcription options. Apple’s SFSpeechRecognizer is presented as the no-setup choice; Whisper through WhisperKit requires a one-time model download. A user can click a word in the transcript to seek to that point in playback.

Those figures are the developer’s measurements, not an independent benchmark. The article also describes a bug encountered with Apple’s recognizer on long audio and says the developer addressed it by splitting audio into roughly 40-second chunks; that is a report about this app’s development, not a general claim about Apple speech recognition.
What happens to the audio
Hegde says the rolling buffer stays in RAM and is not written to disk or uploaded unless the user explicitly saves a clip. Saved clips can be exported as AAC, with WAV as a fallback. The article identifies downloading a Whisper model from Settings as a possible network request.

These are the developer’s descriptions, not the result of an independent security audit. The implementation account names a lock-free ring buffer and Apple audio frameworks, but that does not by itself verify how a particular build handles audio. Anyone considering the app for sensitive meetings should check its current privacy details and test policies against their own requirements.
Memory and hardware trade-offs
Hegde estimates that the buffer uses about 5.5 MB at 30 seconds and about 22 MB at two minutes with a 48 kHz source. On an M1 Pro with 16 GB, the developer reports about 13 MB idle, roughly 16 MB more with a full 120-second buffer, around 46 MB after an Apple transcript settled, and about 200 MB with Whisper Base loaded. Hegde also says idle Whisper pipelines are dropped after about 150 seconds.

The released build is described as intended to support both arm64 and x86_64 Macs, but with Whisper transcription hidden on Intel because of the reported model-loading crash. These are implementation and measurement claims from the developer’s article, not independent testing.
