I Built an Interactive 3D PC Anatomy Tool to Learn What’s Inside a Computer

PC Anatomy takes a desktop from assembled tower to individual components and logical structures, showing what each part does—and where the model’s limits are.

An interactive 3D PC anatomy tool can make a desktop computer easier to understand by showing how a complete tower separates into components—and how some components contain their own logical structures. PC Anatomy is an open-source explorer built around that idea: start with an assembled ATX-style desktop, inspect its parts, then follow the hierarchy down to a GPU streaming multiprocessor. It is a learning model, not a scan of one exact PC or a map of every transistor. PC Anatomy’s repository describes the project’s scope, while its visual guide explains how to explore it.

How to explore the 3D PC anatomy tool

The project includes an interactive explorer, an assembly guide, component education pages, and a readable guide that works without JavaScript. To get oriented, move from the whole machine toward its individual parts rather than opening with the most detailed view.

  1. Start with the assembled computer. Orbit around the tower and zoom in or out to see its overall layout.
  2. Move the disassembly control. Follow the animation from assembled through dissection to inventory, or use Auto to watch the sequence.
  3. Open a component. Select a part to inspect it more closely and learn its role.
  4. Follow the hierarchy. Use the scale navigator and breadcrumbs to move between the whole system, components, and deeper logical structures.

The project says its models follow published ATX dimensions where those dimensions are standardized. That supports learning how a typical desktop is organized; it does not make every depicted part a precise representation of a particular retail machine.

What the major PC components do

The clearest way to understand a gaming PC is to connect each part’s job to where it connects and what it contributes. The PC Anatomy guide presents these relationships component by component.

Component Job Connection or useful distinction
Motherboard Connects and coordinates the major components through sockets, slots, and other connections. The CPU sits in its socket; RAM goes in DIMM slots; a graphics card uses a PCI Express slot; and compact SSDs can use M.2 slots.
CPU Executes program instructions and coordinates system tasks. It must be compatible with the motherboard’s CPU socket. Clock speed by itself is not a reliable way to compare different processor designs.
GPU and graphics card Performs many operations in parallel, including graphics work and other workloads. A graphics card is more than its GPU: the guide also shows video memory, power delivery, and cooling on the card.
RAM Provides fast, temporary working space for programs and data currently in use. It holds active work and loses its contents when power is removed; it is not long-term file storage.
Storage Keeps files and programs when the computer is turned off. The guide shows both SATA and M.2/NVMe examples, which connect in different ways.
Power supply (PSU) Converts incoming mains electricity into the DC power the computer uses, then distributes it through cables. Its job is essential even though it is often less visible than the processor or graphics card.
Cooling Transfers heat away from chips, spreads it through fins, and moves warmed air away from components. Cooling is part of how processors and graphics cards operate, not just a cosmetic addition.

Why component relationships matter more than a single spec

Seeing the motherboard’s socket and slots alongside the CPU, memory, storage, and graphics card helps explain why a PC is a system of compatible parts rather than a pile of individually impressive specifications. For example, a CPU must fit the motherboard socket, and its clock-frequency number cannot be treated as a universal measure across different designs. NVIDIA’s component guide also discusses socket compatibility and cooling.

For someone moving from virtual exploration to planning an actual build, Intel recommends starting with intended use, budget, case, and CPU compatibility; its PC building guide also points to the motherboard and case manuals as useful assembly references. Intel describes the educational value of hands-on building this way: “Building a PC using separate, easy-to-follow steps is a great way to learn about how each individual component works.”

What the models show—and what they do not

PC Anatomy names examples including a GeForce RTX 5090, Radeon RX 9070 XT, Intel Arc B580, Ryzen 9 9950X, Core Ultra 9 285K, and two ASUS TUF power-supply examples. Those named products are distinct from the project’s representative parts in its illustrative desktop build. The repository’s accuracy and sourcing notes explain that the CPU and GPU floorplans describe documented logical architecture; they are not semiconductor mask layouts and do not claim exact transistor placement. The project also says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the named manufacturers.

That boundary matters: the tool is useful for understanding how parts relate and how logical structures are organized, not for treating its graphics as a bill of materials, a silicon scan, or a guarantee that every pictured detail matches one particular computer.

A safety boundary for real hardware

The virtual model is not an invitation to open every component in a real PC. The PC Anatomy guide states: “The virtual disassembly is an educational model, not a guide to opening a real power supply.” Its interactive view teaches component relationships; it does not replace safe hardware-handling guidance.
