You can control an Alexa-compatible thermostat with an Echo by connecting the thermostat in the Alexa app, then using voice commands, app controls, or routines. For Amazon Smart Thermostat, the setup path is Devices > Add Device > Thermostat > Amazon. Check HVAC and wiring compatibility before installation; the Amazon model requires a C-wire and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
Check compatibility before installing
Thermostat setup depends on your HVAC system as well as the Alexa connection. For Amazon Smart Thermostat, first use Amazon’s system compatibility guidance. The thermostat supports air-to-air and geothermal heat pumps, but not heat pumps paired with a gas or oil backup furnace (dual fuel). It requires a C-wire, also called a common wire; Amazon says an adapter may provide the required connection in some cases.

Check the thermostat manufacturer’s compatibility information for a third-party model. Alexa support does not mean every thermostat works with every HVAC system or offers the same controls.
Connect an Amazon Smart Thermostat
- Check the system and wiring. Confirm that your HVAC system is supported and identify whether a C-wire is present. Review Amazon’s wiring instructions before opening the thermostat.
- Open the thermostat setup flow. In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Add Device > Thermostat > Amazon.
- Choose the installation status. Select No if the thermostat is not installed; the app provides guided installation and wiring directions. Select Yes if it is already installed to continue with Wi-Fi and Alexa setup. See Amazon’s setup instructions.
- Complete the guided steps. Follow the app’s directions for wiring, Wi-Fi, and connection. Once setup is complete, the thermostat appears among your Alexa devices.
Stay safe around HVAC wiring
Turn off HVAC power at the breaker or primary switch and verify it is off before removing the thermostat faceplate. Photograph the existing wiring and label the connections before disconnecting anything. If you are unsure about the wiring or installation, contact an HVAC service company.

Troubleshoot connection and installation problems
Alexa cannot find or connect to the thermostat
- Check Wi-Fi. Amazon Smart Thermostat requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; 5 GHz is incompatible. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance also says to turn off the router’s WPA3 setting.
- Check compatibility and power. Confirm the HVAC system is supported and that HVAC power is on when required for setup.
- Restart the setup flow. Use the Alexa app to restart or reinstall the device where appropriate.
See Amazon Smart Thermostat Installation Isn’t Working for the official troubleshooting steps.
The thermostat powers on but installation fails
Check that wires are in the correct terminals, the R jumper position matches the number of R wires, and the C-wire is connected at the HVAC control board. If the thermostat displays “SEt” with a blinking yellow light, Amazon says it may be installing updates. Avoid changing wiring unless HVAC power is off and you are confident in the work.
