It can—if the interruptions are caused by your router leaving a DFS channel after detecting radar or completing its channel availability check. Disabling DFS is a plausible fix for that specific problem, not a universal remedy for Wi-Fi drops. Check your router’s 5 GHz channel and status or event logs first; if they point to DFS or a channel change, try excluding DFS channels or selecting an available non-DFS channel.
How DFS can interrupt a Wi-Fi connection
Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) is used on some 5 GHz Wi-Fi channels that share spectrum with radar. Which channels are available depends on your country or region. A router using one of these channels monitors for radar and may have to move to another channel if it detects a signal. During that change, connected devices can lose Wi-Fi briefly and reconnect. ASUS describes this behavior; TP-Link also explains the channel check and radar-triggered move.

A router may also delay making 5 GHz available while it checks a DFS channel at startup. ASUS says its Channel Availability Check can take 1–10 minutes depending on the country. TP-Link gives channel-specific examples: about one minute for channels 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 132, 136 and 140, and about ten minutes for channels 116, 120, 124 and 128. These are manufacturer examples, not a universal timing guarantee; local rules and available channels vary.

How to tell whether DFS is a likely cause
Before changing settings, note your router model and firmware, country or region, whether the affected connection is 5 GHz, and whether all devices disconnect or only particular ones. Then look in the router’s status page or logs—if available—for entries mentioning DFS, radar detection, a channel change, or a channel availability check. Not every router exposes those events.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
A DFS-related cause is more plausible if the problem affects 5 GHz and the router records a radar event or channel move at the time of a drop. If only one device is affected, or the drops continue without a related router event, DFS may not explain the symptom. Treat the setting change as a test: note the current channel and behavior, change only the DFS-related setting if possible, and see whether the interruptions change.
How to avoid DFS channels
There is no universal menu path: labels and controls vary by router model, firmware and region. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device before changing the 5 GHz channel.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Check the router’s 5 GHz wireless settings. Look for a DFS option, an automatic channel-selection control, or a channel list. Some routers let you exclude DFS channels; others let you select a fixed channel but offer no DFS toggle.
- If supported and permitted in your region, exclude DFS channels or select an available fixed non-DFS channel. TP-Link recommends a fixed non-DFS channel as a way to mitigate DFS effects where available. ASUS’s instructions apply to supported firmware and describe unchecking 160 MHz bandwidth in that interface. That bandwidth step is specific to ASUS’s described settings, not a universal requirement.
- Save the change and reconnect devices if needed. Check whether 5 GHz remains available and whether the unexpected drops stop. Router menu wording and behavior depend on the model and firmware.
For example, ASUS publishes model- and firmware-dependent instructions in its DFS FAQ, while TP-Link discusses fixed non-DFS selection in its support FAQ. Linksys documents a DFS toggle for supported mesh routers in its mesh-network support article. These are examples of manufacturer guidance, not interchangeable steps for every router.

DFS can give a router more channel choices, and Linksys says DFS channels are typically less congested. That does not guarantee better performance in a particular home. Excluding DFS may reduce interruptions caused by radar-triggered moves, but the non-DFS channels available to you may be more crowded. Channel congestion, signal strength, router placement, client support and bandwidth settings also affect results; avoiding DFS does not promise faster Wi-Fi.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Device compatibility matters too. Linksys warns that some devices do not support DFS channels and may use the 2.4 GHz radio instead of 5 GHz. It also notes possible connectivity problems for an unsupported mesh child. If one device or mesh node behaves differently from the others, check its DFS support before assuming that every disconnect is a radar-related event.

If the problem continues on a non-DFS channel, investigate other causes rather than leaving DFS as the assumed diagnosis. Check whether the router logs show a different event, whether the interruption affects one band or several, and whether it affects all devices or only one. If your router offers no DFS control, check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and firmware; a replacement is only worth considering if the existing router cannot provide a channel setting you need. Verify a prospective router’s regional model, firmware documentation and channel controls before buying.
