I Built an Atlassian Forge Major-Version Predictor on a Guess—and Review Found the Answer in My Commit

A review challenged a guessed Forge major version and pointed back to a commit. Here’s how Forge version history, environments, and installed versions differ.

I guessed at an Atlassian Forge app’s next major version and built a predictor around that guess. A review exposed the better place to look: the answer was already recorded in my own commit. The lesson is practical, even without the private commit details: treat a prediction as a hypothesis, then verify the app’s recorded major-version history for the environment you mean.

What a Forge major version tells you

Atlassian Forge tracks app versions separately for each environment. A deployment to an environment creates a new app version, so a version observed in development does not establish the version in production. Forge versions have major and minor segments; the first segment of the displayed version is the major version.

The distinction matters to app installations. A major change may require a site administrator to review and consent to an upgrade. Minor updates to an installed major version are applied automatically. It is therefore not accurate to assume that every deployment or version change triggers an admin review.

New Forge apps start at major 1, minor 1, according to Atlassian’s app version documentation. That documented default does not identify the version of any particular app.

How to check an app’s major-version history

Use the Forge CLI

Run forge version list to get a summary of the app’s major versions, as documented in Atlassian’s CLI reference. Use the result to check recorded history rather than infer a major version from a guessed pattern.

Check the relevant environment and installation

Forge version records are environment-specific. Confirm that you are looking at the environment relevant to the question; do not treat a development version as the production version. Atlassian also documents forge install list for checking major versions installed on sites. The developer console’s Installations and Deployments views provide installation and deployment context.

What the review revealed—and what it does not establish

This postmortem’s central correction is to separate an inferred answer from evidence already preserved in the repository. If a commit contains the value or change that resolves a version question, inspect that recorded source before relying on a predictor. The specific commit, predictor logic, review comments, and correct version number are not publicly available here, so none can be responsibly supplied.

For a version decision, use the evidence that matches the question: the app’s major-version history for recorded Forge releases, the target environment for deployment context, and the installation listing or console when the question is what a site currently has installed. A predictor can suggest where to look; it cannot substitute for those checks.
