Give an AI agent a stable, attributable identity when it starts, then re-check its identity, authorization, task context, and state before each meaningful execution pass. That “fingerprint at load, pulse before every pass” approach is an engineering pattern—not a vendor-standard protocol or a substitute for access controls.
What the fingerprint and pulse are meant to verify
The fingerprint is the agent’s trusted identity, established through an identity platform rather than a name or label in a prompt. The pulse is an application-level check before a pass that asks whether the expected agent, permissions, task or session context, and any state or credential being relied on are still valid and fresh.

Keep three layers distinct:
- Identity establishes which agent or principal is authenticating.
- Authorization determines which resources and actions that identity may use.
- Application state carries task instructions, conversation context, and other runtime information between turns or after interruptions.
A matching identity does not prove that an action is authorized, and saved conversation state does not prove who is making a request. OpenAI’s running agents documentation describes application-managed session state and server-managed continuation options; it also advises choosing one conversation strategy per conversation unless you deliberately reconcile multiple layers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose an identity and authority that fit the agent’s job
Use an agent identity where the platform supports one
Microsoft recommends agent identities for most AI agents, with a paired user account only when a resource requires a user object. Its guidance distinguishes agent identity from service principals, which it describes as designed for deterministic, static workloads. These are Microsoft Entra recommendations, not a rule that applies identically across all identity platforms. See Plan your agent identity architecture.

Decide whether the agent acts independently or for a signed-in user
For autonomous background work, the agent uses authority assigned to it. For work performed on behalf of a user, use a delegated model that represents that user’s authority where the platform supports it. Microsoft differentiates autonomous application permissions from interactive delegated permissions. Google Cloud’s Agent Identity overview likewise describes agent-owned and user-delegated authentication choices, and says audit records can distinguish the agent from the user when acting for that user.
Choose the model based on whose interests and permissions govern the action—not simply which option is easiest to implement. Apply least privilege, and do not treat a copied identifier, prompt label, or agent-supplied claim as cryptographic proof of identity.

- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Set isolation around trust boundaries
Microsoft’s architecture guidance says, “Default: use one blueprint per trust boundary.” That is Microsoft’s recommendation for its architecture, not a universal standard. It also recommends, by default, one identity per logical agent. Separating identities and blueprints along meaningful security boundaries can make permissions and audit attribution easier to reason about than sharing one broad identity across unrelated agents. Microsoft’s Fundamental concepts in Microsoft Entra Agent ID describes owners as technical administrators and sponsors as business-accountability roles.

- At startup, load a trusted identity reference. Identify the agent through the platform’s identity mechanism; do not rely on a display name supplied in a prompt.
- Acquire or refresh credentials through that platform. Keep credential handling and rotation with the identity system where possible rather than embedding long-lived secrets in task state.
- Before each meaningful pass, check the requirements for that pass. Confirm the expected agent, task or session, authorization context, and freshness and integrity of the state or credential the action depends on. The exact checks depend on the platform and the risk of the action.
- Run only after the required checks succeed. If a check cannot complete, define an explicit failure behavior—such as stopping the action or requiring reauthorization—instead of silently proceeding with stale assumptions.
- Record attribution. Log the agent identity and relevant user or task attribution, along with enough execution context to investigate the action under your organization’s logging rules.
There is no universal heartbeat cadence or failure policy established by the cited vendor documentation. A check before every meaningful pass is a design choice; define “meaningful” around your agent’s work and the consequences of an incorrect or unauthorized action.
Make the heartbeat survive restarts without confusing state for identity
A process that sleeps, is evicted, or resumes later may not retain all of its runtime data. Cloudflare’s long-running agents documentation describes agents that wake on requests, messages, or scheduled alarms, and distinguishes durable state from in-memory variables, timers, open requests, and closures that may be lost during hibernation or eviction. Its documented SQLite state survives those lifecycle transitions.

For a restart-aware design, persist only the state needed to resume safely, and re-establish or validate identity and credentials through the relevant platform when execution resumes. Do not assume that a surviving task record authenticates the agent, or that a credential or authorization context captured before a sleep remains suitable for the next action.

| Design concern | What to decide |
|---|---|
| Identity isolation | Whether each logical agent needs a distinct identity, and where trust boundaries require separate blueprints or equivalent isolation. |
| Authority | Whether the agent acts autonomously or with a signed-in user’s delegated authority, and which permissions each mode needs. |
| Credentials | How credentials are acquired, refreshed, and rotated; avoid treating a static copied string as proof. |
| Audit attribution | What logs must identify the agent, the user when applicable, and the task or action being performed. |
| Restart behavior | Which state must survive sleep or eviction, and what must be revalidated when the agent resumes. |
| Platform compatibility | Whether the identity and authorization mechanisms work for the services, endpoints, or other agents the runtime needs to contact. |
What vendor examples establish—and what they do not
Google Cloud describes Agent Identity as a strongly attested cryptographic identity based on SPIFFE, with uses including authentication to MCP servers, cloud resources, endpoints, and other agents. Its documentation says each X.509 certificate is valid for 24 hours and Google Cloud automatically keeps it current. That certificate lifetime and renewal behavior apply to Google Cloud Agent Identity; they should not be generalized to other providers or treated as a recommended heartbeat interval.

Microsoft and Google document identity, authority, and attribution mechanisms in their respective platforms. Cloudflare documents lifecycle and durable-state behavior for its agent runtime. Together, these examples support the design considerations above, but none defines a cross-vendor “pulse before every pass” standard or a universally effective cadence.
