If your PC can reach the internet but cannot find another computer, printer, or shared drive on your home network, check its Windows network profile before replacing the router. A connection marked Public is designed to limit discovery by other devices; on a trusted home network, Private is usually the appropriate profile when you want local discovery or sharing. Microsoft says a Windows network reset can change known connections to Public. That makes this a credible cause of some LAN symptoms, not proof that every connectivity problem—or the specific incident in this headline—comes from this setting.
Why a Windows setting can look like a router problem
“LAN connectivity” can mean several different things. A PC might have no internet access, be unable to reach the router, or be online but unable to discover another device or use file and printer sharing. Those symptoms point to different parts of the connection.

Windows uses network profiles to apply security and firewall behavior. Public is intended for networks you do not trust, such as public Wi-Fi, and limits how discoverable your PC is to other devices. Private is intended for a trusted network, such as your home network, where you may want device discovery and sharing. Windows also has a Domain profile for managed networks. Microsoft explains the profile types in its Windows Firewall overview.
Microsoft notes that after a network reset, known connections might be set to Public, making the PC undiscoverable to other PCs and devices on that network. If internet access still works but local discovery or sharing does not, checking the profile is a sensible early step. It does not establish that the profile caused any particular person’s router or LAN issue.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How to change a Windows network from Public to Private
Set a network to Private only if you trust it. Leave a hotel, café, airport, or other shared network set to Public.
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- For Ethernet, select Ethernet, then select the connected network.
- Find Network profile type and choose Private for a trusted home network.
- For Wi-Fi, open Wi-Fi, select the connected network, and inspect its profile setting. Choose Private only if you trust that network.
- Try the local task that failed, such as opening a shared folder or finding a printer.
Microsoft documents the profile setting in its Windows Ethernet connection troubleshooting guidance. Windows menu wording can vary by release; if these labels are missing, check the instructions for your Windows version rather than changing unrelated network settings.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Public or Private: which profile should you use?
| Profile | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Public | You are on a network you do not trust, such as public Wi-Fi. | Your PC is less discoverable to other devices on that network. |
| Private | You trust the network, such as your home network, and want local discovery or sharing. | Discovery and sharing can be available, subject to applicable firewall rules and other settings. |
| Domain | Your PC is connected to a managed domain network. | Windows applies the domain profile; follow your organization’s network guidance. |
Changing a profile affects how Windows treats that network; it does not repair a disconnected cable, a router fault, or every application-specific block.
If changing the profile does not restore LAN access
Separate local access from internet access
Check what actually fails. If websites load but a shared drive or printer does not appear, focus on local discovery, sharing, and the rules for the app or feature. If the PC cannot reach the internet either, investigate the connection itself rather than assuming the profile is the cause.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check the Ethernet connection
If you use Ethernet, make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends and connected to a router LAN port—not the router’s Internet port, which is used for the modem connection. Microsoft includes these checks in its Ethernet troubleshooting steps.
Review the firewall rule for the feature
Keep Windows Firewall enabled. If a particular sharing feature or app remains blocked, check whether its firewall rule allows the active network profile. Microsoft recommends against turning the firewall off: doing so removes other protections, including protections related to connection security and network attacks. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows Firewall overview.

Save Network reset for broader problems
Network reset is more disruptive than changing a profile. Microsoft says it removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after a restart. VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches might need to be reinstalled or configured again, and known connections might become Public. Try narrower checks first, and use Microsoft’s network troubleshooting guidance for the reset procedure and version-specific steps.
