“Perfect peak separation” describes a specific temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) approach used in some elemental-analysis workflows: the next gas is released only after the preceding gas peak has returned to baseline. This sequencing is intended to prevent the measured gas peaks from overlapping. It is not a universal guarantee for chromatography or every elemental analyzer.
What peak separation means in this context
CHNS elemental analysis measures carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur in a sample, helping assess its composition and purity. In the TPD workflow described by the University of Padua Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences, heating releases gases at different temperatures. The next gas is released only after the previous gas peak reaches baseline, so the peaks do not overlap in the described process. The university states: “The release of a gas is only initiated when the prior gas peak has reached baseline.” University of Padua, “Elemental Analysis” (content dated June 21, 2024).

Here, “perfect” is wording for this particular separation approach, not a general scientific threshold. The available evidence does not establish a universal definition of perfect peak separation, nor does it show that all instruments or methods eliminate overlap.

- Heat the prepared sample. The method controls heating so sample components are released as gases at different temperatures.
- Measure the first gas peak. The system waits for that measured peak to return to baseline.
- Release the next gas. Only then does the next gas begin to be released, separating its signal from the prior peak in the described workflow.
Elementar describes a related, product-specific approach in its vario ISOTOPE select analyzer: dynamic heating releases target gases after the preceding sample peak reaches baseline. The manufacturer says this provides full peak separation in simultaneous NCS analysis mode. It describes the result as follows: “Because the individual target gases are only released, once the prior sample peak has reached baseline, complete peak separation is guaranteed even for extreme elemental ratios.” This is Elementar’s claim for its own instrument, not an independent performance finding. Elementar, vario ISOTOPE select.

What the stated detection limit does—and does not—tell you
The University of Padua page reports a detection limit of 10 µg/g (10 ppm) for trace carbon and nitrogen for the named vario MicroCube analyzer. That figure applies to that analyzer as reported by the facility; it is not a detection limit for every CHNS instrument or a measure of peak separation itself. University of Padua, “Elemental Analysis”.
Sample preparation and compatible accessories
Peak sequencing is only one part of an analysis. Elementar lists sample-preparation tools for compressing samples into tin foil or cups, as well as a press for sealing tin or silver capsules. Use such accessories and consumables only when they are compatible with the instrument and specified by the method; the available product information does not establish universal capsule dimensions or fit. Elementar, vario ISOTOPE select.
How to interpret “perfect” claims
Check which instrument, analysis mode and method the claim refers to. A manufacturer’s statement about its analyzer should not be generalized to other products, and a baseline-triggered release sequence is a description of a workflow rather than proof that every real-world measurement has zero interference under all conditions. A resolution value sometimes labeled “perfect” in a particular method evaluation likewise does not define a universal standard.
