To use Dashlane on a Mac, install its app from the Mac App Store, then enable the separately managed Dashlane extension in Safari if you want browser autofill. Both require macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later. Installing the app also installs the extension, but Safari autofill will not work until the extension is enabled, granted website access, signed in, and verified.
What you need before installing Dashlane
- A Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later. Dashlane lists this minimum for both its macOS app and Safari extension in its macOS installation instructions.
- Access to the Mac App Store. Dashlane says its Mac app and Safari extension are distributed together there; use official distribution rather than an unofficial download.
- Your Dashlane account credentials and access to the email address or authenticator app you use for device verification.
Before you begin, set up at least one account recovery option as Dashlane recommends. Recovery is a preparation step, not a promise that every forgotten credential can be recovered.

Install Dashlane and enable it in Safari
- Install the app: Open the Mac App Store, find Dashlane, and install it. Installing the app also installs the Safari extension, according to Dashlane’s Mac installation guide.
- Open Safari’s extension settings: In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions. Turn on Dashlane. Dashlane notes that the extension is not enabled by default for a new Safari user.
- Grant website access: When Safari asks whether Dashlane can access websites, allow the access needed for sites where you want autofill.
- Turn off Safari’s built-in AutoFill: Go to Safari > Settings > AutoFill and turn off the built-in AutoFill checkboxes, following Dashlane’s Safari setup instructions. This helps avoid competition between Safari’s own saved information and Dashlane.
- Sign in to the extension: Select the Dashlane icon in Safari and sign in. Verify the extension as a device separately from the Mac app; Dashlane says verification can use a code sent by email or a token from an authenticator app. Its browser extension onboarding guide explains the process.
Mac app or Safari extension: which part does what?
The desktop app and browser extension are related but distinct. The app opens a standalone vault window and works independently of the extension. The extension provides Dashlane in Safari, including browser autofill; installing or signing in to the Mac app alone does not enable Safari autofill.

Use Dashlane autofill in Safari
Once the extension is active and signed in, open a website’s sign-in or form page and use the Dashlane prompt or extension to select saved information. Dashlane describes its autofill engine as analyzing page content to identify field types and offer relevant stored data. That is the company’s description of how the feature works, not an independent performance test; its autofill guide covers the feature.
If autofill does not appear, check the setup in this order:

- Confirm Dashlane is enabled under Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Check that Safari has granted the extension access to the website.
- Confirm you are signed in to the extension and that its device verification is complete.
- Make sure Safari’s built-in AutoFill options are turned off under Safari > Settings > AutoFill.
- Check that your Mac meets Dashlane’s macOS Sequoia 15.0 minimum.
Safari-specific limitations to expect
Dashlane’s Safari and macOS FAQ, updated September 16, 2026, lists several differences from other ways of using Dashlane:
- No Touch ID unlock for the Safari extension. Touch ID cannot be used to unlock the extension.
- Some settings are not available in the Mac app. You cannot change or view two-factor authentication (2FA) settings in the macOS app.
- AI protection features are unavailable in Safari. AI-Powered Scam Protection and AI phishing alerts are not available in the Safari extension.
- Self-hosted SSO is not supported by the Safari extension. Dashlane attributes this to Apple limitations; it says self-hosted single sign-on can be used through its macOS app. This distinction is most relevant to organizational users.
See Dashlane’s Safari and macOS FAQ for its current account of these limitations.

What Dashlane says about its security model
Dashlane describes its system as zero-knowledge: vault data is encrypted locally and decrypted on authorized devices. Its technical architecture overview specifies AES-256-CBC encryption with HMAC-SHA256 and a device-specific authentication key. These are vendor descriptions of its design, not independent validation or a guarantee against risks such as a compromised Mac, weak account secrets, or unsafe recovery practices. Use the official app distribution, complete device verification carefully, and establish an account recovery option.
