Work through those checks in that order. A dedicated server currently needs Java 25, at least 4 GB of memory, and (unless you changed the bind) UDP port 5520. Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, not TCP, so a TCP port-forward alone will not let players connect.

Use this three-minute triage order
Do these checks before changing advanced settings. They separate the common, reversible problems from deeper network or hardware issues.

- Restart and compare builds. Close the launcher and restart the server. Check that both are on the same patchline. Hytale protocol hashes must match; after an update, an old server can reject every connection even when the address and port are correct. Update the server before inviting players. The official Hytale Server Manual documents the update system.
- Check authentication. In the server console, run
/auth status. If the installation is new or the credential has expired, run/auth login device, open the displayed device URL, enter the code, and wait for Authentication successful! Mode: OAUTH_DEVICE. - Confirm Java and resources. A dedicated server requires Java 25 and the manual lists 4 GB of memory as the minimum baseline. CPU load rises with player and entity counts; RAM load rises with the amount of world loaded and the view-distance setting.
- Verify the network path. The default bind is UDP 5520. Forward UDP 5520 to the host, allow it through the host firewall, and use the same custom UDP port everywhere if you changed
--bind. TCP forwarding is not required. - Isolate crashes. Read the first meaningful error in the console, move recently added files out of
mods/, and start once with a clean mod set.
Change one thing at a time and retest. That gives you a reliable cause-and-effect trail instead of several simultaneous changes that are difficult to undo.
Players cannot join a dedicated server
Check the exact error and server state
First make sure the server process is still running and has finished loading the world. A closed console, a process that exits immediately, or a server that is still generating a world is not a port-forwarding problem. Have one player try while you watch the console; a connection attempt usually produces a more useful message than the client’s generic failure dialog.

Then compare the client and server versions after every game update. Restart the launcher as well as the server so a partially downloaded client build is not being used. A protocol-hash mismatch is expected to reject the connection, and changing firewall rules cannot fix it.
Forward QUIC traffic on UDP 5520
Hytale’s dedicated-server transport is QUIC over UDP. The default port is 5520. Create a router rule that sends UDP 5520 to the computer running the server, and create a matching inbound firewall rule on that computer. If you selected a different bind port, substitute that port in the router, firewall, launch command, and the address given to players.
On Windows, the manual’s example rule is:
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Hytale Server" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 5520 -Action AllowOn Linux, allow 5520/udp with your firewall tool (for example, an iptables rule or a UFW rule), then verify that the rule is active. Do not create only a TCP rule: TCP forwarding is not part of the dedicated-server connection path.
Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A connection that works only from inside your home network usually indicates a router, firewall, double-NAT, or carrier-grade NAT issue rather than a Hytale account problem.
Look for double NAT or CGNAT
Double NAT occurs when two routers both perform address translation. Forward the chosen UDP port on both devices, or put the upstream device into bridge mode and keep routing on one router. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) is different: the ISP does not give your router a publicly reachable address, so ordinary inbound forwarding cannot work. Ask the ISP for a public address, use a private overlay network such as Tailscale, or move the server to managed hosting.
If both players have working IPv6, Hytale’s friend-connection guidance says IPv6 can provide a direct path without an IPv4 port-forward. This depends on correctly configured IPv6 at both ends; it is not a workaround for a broken local firewall.

Authentication failed or the server keeps asking you to log in
Complete device authentication correctly
- Run
/auth statusand read the reported mode and state. - For a new or unauthenticated installation, run
/auth login device. - Open the URL printed by the server, enter the one-time code, and finish the sign-in flow.
- Leave the server running until it reports Authentication successful! Mode: OAUTH_DEVICE.
- Run
/auth statusagain to confirm that the authenticated state persisted.
The device flow waits up to 900 seconds for authorization. Do not repeatedly start new login attempts while one is pending; first check that the displayed URL was opened, the code was entered on the intended account, and the server clock is correct.
Understand session and refresh-token expiry
Hytale game sessions last one hour and are refreshed five minutes before expiry. The OAuth refresh token has a 30-day time-to-live. A server that has been offline longer than 30 days may therefore need the device login again. If authentication fails unexpectedly, correct the host clock, stop duplicate server processes, and perform one fresh login rather than spamming commands.
Java, memory, and startup prerequisites
Install the required Java version
Dedicated Hytale servers require Java 25. Confirm the runtime used by the server process, not merely the Java version installed somewhere else on the machine. A service, wrapper script, or hosting panel can select a different executable than your interactive shell. If the console reports an unsupported class version or fails before loading server files, point the launch configuration at a Java 25 installation and restart.
Meet the memory baseline without treating it as a capacity guarantee
The manual lists 4 GB as the minimum memory baseline. That is a starting requirement, not a promise that every world, view distance, mod set, and player group will run smoothly with 4 GB. Leave headroom for the operating system and other services. Watch actual memory use while players explore, because loaded area and view distance—not only the number of connected players—drive RAM pressure.

Friend hosting and share-code failures
Regenerate a valid share code
For a friend-hosted world, add each player as a Hytale friend before generating a new code. Codes expire, so an old code can fail even when the host is online. On the host, open Online Play, choose Copy Network Report, and follow the named cause in that report. It can identify a direct-route failure or a relay condition more precisely than the join dialog.

Allow the game through local security software
Check Windows Firewall and antivirus exceptions on the host. Temporarily using the USB-Ethernet test described below can also distinguish a wireless-driver problem from a blocked or misrouted connection. Restore normal security settings after testing; an exception should be limited to the Hytale executable or required traffic.
Choose hosting appropriate to the group
Friend hosting is convenient for a small group, but the world normally depends on the owner’s computer and connection. A dedicated server is a better fit for a persistent world or a larger group because it can remain online while the owner is offline and exposes more configuration. If your ISP uses CGNAT or your router cannot forward UDP, managed hosting or a private overlay network may be simpler than trying to force an inbound route.

Hytale support notes that some Intel and Realtek network devices have rare driver issues. QUIC is a modern protocol and is not fully supported by every computer or driver combination. The safest diagnostic is a temporary hardware comparison:
- Connect a USB Ethernet adapter to the affected Windows computer.
- Use the adapter for one join attempt without changing any other setting.
- If the join succeeds, the original adapter or its driver path is implicated; if it still fails, continue with authentication, version, and network checks.
When the adapter test points to the built-in adapter, change one setting at a time and test after each change:
- Disable Priority & VLAN.
- Disable Receive Segment Coalescing for IPv4 and IPv6.
- Then, if necessary, test disabling Advanced EEE, ARP Offload, Energy-Efficient Ethernet, Flow Control, and Green Ethernet.
Record the original value before every change. The support guidance warns that its most invasive final configuration can be difficult to reverse, so use staged tests and stop once the fault is isolated. Update the adapter driver from the computer manufacturer when possible rather than applying several undocumented registry tweaks at once.
Server crashes during startup
Read the first real error
Scroll to the first exception or explicit failure, not the cascade of “shutdown” messages that follows it. Capture the complete error, the server build, Java version, and the last change made. A missing file, incompatible Java runtime, authentication failure, and mod exception require different fixes.

Remove recent mods first
Mods are a leading cause of boot crashes. Stop the server, move the newest file out of mods/ (keep it in a separate backup folder), and start again. If the clean server starts, reintroduce files one at a time until the failing change is identified. Hytale accepts .zip and .jar mods in mods/. The manual warns that early plugins are unsupported and can cause stability problems, so treat plugin additions as a likely fault line after an update.
Protect the world before experimenting
Before removing mods or applying an update, stop the server cleanly and copy the universe/ directory plus configuration, permissions, bans, and whitelist data. A backup lets you roll back a bad mod or update without sacrificing the world or access lists.
Lag, stutters, and rising memory use
Reduce view distance first
The manual states that “View distance is the main driver for RAM usage” and recommends limiting maximum view distance to 12 chunks (384 blocks). Lower this setting before adding memory or blaming the network. A high view distance keeps more terrain loaded around each player, and players exploring in separate directions multiply that loaded area.
Separate CPU pressure from RAM pressure
- CPU pressure: often follows high player counts, many entities, or concentrated activity. Check CPU telemetry while the lag occurs and look for entity-heavy areas.
- RAM pressure: follows large loaded areas, high view distance, and players spreading out. Watch memory usage and garbage-collection behavior while the group explores.
- Change-related spikes: a newly added mod can increase either workload or tick time. Reproduce the lag with that mod removed before changing several server settings.
Ask players to test while staying near one another, then repeat while traveling in different directions. That comparison reveals whether loaded-area growth, rather than connection quality, is the dominant trigger.

Use the built-in updater deliberately
The updater checks for releases by default every hour and stages files before applying them. The available commands are:
/update check— check for an available update./update download— download and stage the update./update status— inspect the staged update state./update apply --confirm— apply the staged update after confirming.
When a wrapper script is responsible for restarting the process, the server can shut down with exit code 8 so the wrapper can launch the new binaries. Do not interpret that code as a world-corruption error without checking the wrapper log.

Back up and verify parity after applying
The wrapper preserves configuration, saves, and mods while replacing server binaries and assets, but keep a backup before applying any update. After the restart, confirm the server build and client build are on the same patchline, authenticate if required, and only then let players reconnect. For production installations, the Hytale Downloader CLI is the supported automation path; use it with a tested backup and restart procedure.

When to stop troubleshooting and change the setup
Use a dedicated installation when the owner’s computer must not be the availability bottleneck, when more than a few friends need reliable access, or when repeated world loading exceeds the host’s memory. Use managed hosting or a private overlay when CGNAT prevents inbound forwarding. Keep your own backups and verify the provider’s current software version and terms before migrating; hosting does not remove the need for matching builds, authentication, Java 25, or mod compatibility.
If a clean, authenticated server on matching builds still fails only for one network, focus on that network’s firewall, NAT, IPv6, or adapter path. If every client fails in the same way, return to the server console, bind port, authentication state, and version parity rather than changing individual player settings.
