The quickest safe method
An .ovpn file is an OpenVPN client profile. It can include certificates, private keys, usernames, or embedded key material, so treat it like a password: transfer it over an encrypted SSH channel, keep it out of shared folders, and delete unnecessary copies.

scp user@VPS-IP:/home/user/client.ovpn ./The final ./ means “the current local directory.” To place the file directly on a desktop, use the desktop path for your operating system instead. For a non-standard SSH port, put an uppercase -P before the connection:

scp -P 2222 [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn ./The OpenBSD scp manual documents this syntax. A VPS setup guide shows the same pattern with a home-directory profile: scp vpnadmin@<YOUR-VPS-IP>:~/myvpnuser.ovpn ./ (LiquidWeb’s VPS VPN guide).
What you need before copying
- The VPS address: use its public IPv4 address, DNS name, or an address that resolves from your computer.
- An SSH account: the username must be able to log in and read the profile, or you must prepare a readable copy as described below.
- The SSH port: port 22 is the default. If your server listens elsewhere, record that number;
-Pis required for the transfer. - Authentication: have the SSH password or the private key and passphrase used for that account.
- The remote path: know the exact location and filename, including capitalization. Installer scripts often create a profile in a user’s home directory, but the location depends on the installer.
- A local destination: choose a private directory before you run the command. Avoid a shared Downloads folder on a multi-user computer.
Do not confuse the SSH port with an OpenVPN service port. scp connects through SSH, so its -P value must match the SSH daemon’s listening port.
Find the .ovpn file on the VPS
First connect to the VPS normally:
ssh user@VPS-IPIf SSH uses another port:
ssh -p 2222 user@VPS-IPNotice that ssh uses lowercase -p, while scp uses uppercase -P. Once logged in, check the home directory:
ls -la ~/*.ovpnIf that reports no matches, search likely locations that you are allowed to read:

sudo find /root /home -type f -name '*.ovpn' -print 2>/dev/nullUse the path returned by the command exactly in your local scp command. Tilde expansion is performed by the remote shell, so ~/client.ovpn refers to the home directory of the account named in the command, not necessarily the directory you expected. If a filename contains spaces, quote the remote argument:

Linux or macOS
- Open Terminal on your local computer and change to the private destination directory, for example
cd ~/Downloadsor a dedicated VPN folder. - Run the command with the account, host, remote path, and optional port:
scp -P 2222 [email protected]:~/myvpnuser.ovpn ./- Accept the host-key prompt only when the fingerprint matches one you trust. If you have never connected to this VPS, verify the fingerprint through your provider or another trusted administration channel.
- Enter the SSH password, or let
scpuse your SSH key. A key that is not in the default location can be selected with uppercase-i:
scp -i ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519 -P 2222 [email protected]:~/myvpnuser.ovpn ./- Wait for the transfer to finish. A returned shell prompt without an error normally means the file was written to the local directory.
- Confirm the local file exists and inspect its permissions:
ls -l ./myvpnuser.ovpn
chmod 600 ./myvpnuser.ovpnThe second command makes the file readable and writable only by your local account on Unix-like systems. Use it when the profile contains private keys.
Windows PowerShell with OpenSSH
Current Windows installations commonly include the OpenSSH client. Open PowerShell and run the same command, using a Windows destination path:
scp -P 2222 [email protected]:/home/vpnadmin/myvpnuser.ovpn "$HOMEDesktopmyvpnuser.ovpn"$HOME expands to your Windows user profile. You can also copy to Downloads:
scp [email protected]:/home/vpnadmin/myvpnuser.ovpn "$HOMEDownloadsmyvpnuser.ovpn"If your private key is a file such as C:UsersAlex.sshvps_ed25519, specify it with a quoted path:

scp -i "$HOME.sshvps_ed25519" [email protected]:/home/vpnadmin/myvpnuser.ovpn "$HOMEDesktop"PowerShell treats the colon in a Windows path as local syntax, so quote the destination when it contains spaces. If scp is not recognized, install or enable the OpenSSH Client optional feature in Windows Settings, then open a new PowerShell window. The exact Settings wording can vary by Windows release.
Use a custom SSH configuration
If you regularly administer the VPS, an entry in ~/.ssh/config (or the equivalent SSH configuration used by your platform) lets you use a short host alias:
Host my-vps
HostName 203.0.113.10
User vpnadmin
Port 2222
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519After saving it with permissions restricted to your account, the transfer becomes:
scp my-vps:/home/vpnadmin/myvpnuser.ovpn ./This does not change where the file resides; it only centralizes the connection settings and reduces typing errors.
Why uppercase -P matters (and lowercase -p does not)
In scp, uppercase -P selects the SSH port:
scp -P 2222 user@VPS-IP:/path/client.ovpn ./Lowercase -p has a different purpose: it asks scp to preserve the source file’s modification time and mode bits. It does not select a port. The distinction is easy to miss because the SSH command uses lowercase -p for its port option. The option definitions are listed in the OpenBSD scp manual.

Since OpenSSH 9.0, the standard scp command uses the SFTP protocol for transfers by default, while retaining the familiar command-line interface. This implementation detail usually requires no change to your command; it matters mainly when troubleshooting an unusually restrictive or old SSH server.
Method 2: use an SFTP desktop client
A graphical SFTP client is useful when you want to browse the VPS, confirm the directory visually, or avoid shell syntax. The workflow is the same whether you use WinSCP, FileZilla, or another SFTP-capable application:
- Create a new connection and select SFTP, not FTP or plain SCP.
- Enter the VPS hostname or IP address, SSH port, username, and password or private-key file.
- Connect and complete the host-key verification. Compare the fingerprint with a trusted record when possible.
- In the remote pane, open the directory identified earlier and locate the file ending in
.ovpn. - In the local pane, open a private destination such as your user profile’s VPN folder.
- Drag the profile from the remote pane to the local pane, or use the client’s Download command.
- Confirm that the transfer completed, then close the session and check that the local file is present.
Do not select an anonymous or unencrypted FTP connection. The profile may contain client key material, and SFTP protects the transfer through SSH. Graphical interfaces change over time, so labels such as “New Site,” “Login,” or “Download” may appear in different locations; the required connection values remain the same.
Fix “permission denied” errors
A permission error generally means the SSH account can log in but cannot read the remote file, or cannot traverse one of the directories in its path. A community troubleshooting thread describes this situation when copying OpenVPN keys to a local machine (Linode Community discussion).
Check the file and directory permissions
On the VPS, inspect the path:
namei -l /path/to/client.ovpn
ls -l /path/to/client.ovpnYour account needs execute permission on each parent directory and read permission on the file. Avoid making a private key world-readable just to complete a transfer.
Copy to a temporary readable location as an administrator
If you administer the VPS and the profile is root-owned, copy it to a directory your transfer account can read:

sudo install -o vpnadmin -g vpnadmin -m 600 /root/client.ovpn /home/vpnadmin/client-transfer.ovpnReplace vpnadmin with the account you will use for scp. The install command sets the owner, group, and restrictive mode in one step. Then, from your local computer, transfer the temporary file:
scp vpnadmin@VPS-IP:/home/vpnadmin/client-transfer.ovpn ./After verifying the local copy, remove the VPS copy:
sudo rm -- /home/vpnadmin/client-transfer.ovpnIf policy requires preserving the original ownership and path, an administrator can instead grant narrowly scoped access through an appropriate group or ACL. Change only the permissions needed for this one transfer and remove temporary access afterward.
When you cannot use sudo
Ask the VPS administrator to place a copy in your home directory with ownership or read access for your account. Do not paste private key contents into chat, email, or an issue tracker as a workaround.

Verify the transfer before importing the profile
Check the file size and name locally:
ls -lh ./client.ovpnOn Windows PowerShell, use:

sha256sum /path/to/client.ovpnOn macOS:
shasum -a 256 ./client.ovpnOn Windows PowerShell:
Get-FileHash "$HOMEDesktopclient.ovpn" -Algorithm SHA256The hashes should match exactly. A mismatch can indicate that you selected the wrong profile, copied an incomplete file, or checked different files. Do not edit the profile in a word processor; line endings and hidden characters can affect parsing. Import it through your OpenVPN client using that application’s documented profile-import control, and keep the original file as a backup only if it remains in a private location.
Common errors and their fixes

Security checklist for .ovpn files
- Use SCP or SFTP over SSH; never transfer the profile through unencrypted FTP or an untrusted web upload.
- Keep the local copy in an account-private directory and restrict permissions where your operating system supports it.
- Assume that anyone who obtains a profile containing a private key may be able to use the VPN account. Revoke or regenerate the profile if it is exposed.
- Delete temporary VPS copies, duplicate downloads, and shared-computer copies after you confirm the intended installation.
- Do not post the file, its private-key blocks, or screenshots of credentials in support forums. A community question about copying an OpenVPN file to a local computer illustrates the sort of problem people commonly troubleshoot publicly (DigitalOcean Community question), but the profile itself should remain private.
- Back up the profile only in an encrypted storage location. Include the filename and the date it was issued so you can identify and retire old credentials.

Bottom line
Locate the profile on the VPS, confirm that your SSH account can read it, and run scp from the destination computer. Use uppercase -P only when SSH uses a non-default port, verify the resulting file, and handle every copy as sensitive VPN credential material.
