Hytale customization has three distinct layers. Use the Avatar Creator for your character’s appearance, Creative Mode for hands-on terrain and structures, and the technical Node Editor plus world-generation assets and an Instance.bson configuration for reusable biome and generator changes. The right route depends on whether you want a different look, a changed play space, or a new definition that worlds can load.

Because Hytale is in Early Access, the available cosmetics, creator tools and world-generation templates can change between builds. The documentation currently labels its release as 0.7.2; Update 2 and the July 2026 update added several customization-related changes. Treat the current build and its patch notes as authoritative when a menu or option is not where this guide describes it.

The practical dividing line is play-space editing versus asset authoring. Creative Mode changes a world directly and is the fastest way to shape a build. The Node Editor and instance files change reusable definitions that a world can load, so they require more technical care and the correct permissions.
Customize your character in the Avatar Creator
Open the Avatar Creator and work through the categories available in your current build. Hytale describes the system as freeform customization intended to support everything from modern styling to rugged adventuring gear. The item range is designed to expand during Early Access, so a category or cosmetic shown in a guide may not exist in every release.

What you can adjust
- Clothing and cosmetics: assemble the outfit and appearance pieces exposed by the current Avatar Creator.
- Colors: choose from the color controls attached to supported items. Update 2 added color-name tooltips, making it easier to identify a selected color instead of relying only on the swatch.
- Armor visibility: Update 2 added visibility toggles beside equipped armor slots. Use them when you want armor bonuses or equipment equipped without displaying every visible piece.
- Hands and eyelashes: the July 2026 update said more detailed hand and eyelash options were being added. Their exact selection set is therefore build-dependent.
A reliable avatar workflow
- Enter the Avatar Creator from the character-customization entry point in your current Hytale build.
- Set the base appearance and then add clothing or cosmetic items.
- Use color controls and read the color-name tooltip added in Update 2 when you need a specific shade.
- Check each equipped armor slot and switch its visibility according to whether you want the model shown.
- Review the hands and eyelash categories if they are present in your build; the available choices are expanding during Early Access.
- Save or confirm the avatar using the control displayed by your build, then check the character in-game under normal lighting and equipment conditions.
Do not treat any online list as a permanent catalog. Hytale’s own product wording promises a continuously expanding item range, and the July 2026 update specifically called out additional hand and eyelash detail. If an option is missing, first verify the build and patch notes before assuming the account or world is malfunctioning.
Build and reshape terrain in Creative Mode
For ordinary construction, Creative Mode is the least complicated and most immediate route. It lets you edit the world in play rather than authoring a reusable generation asset. The tool set is broad enough for large terrain passes and precise structure work.
Scripted Brushes: fast, repeatable terrain passes
Scripted Brushes are asset-defined brushes that you can drag into your inventory. The documented examples include brushes for creating mountains, grassy paths and procedurally generated ruins. They are useful when you need a recognizable landform quickly or want a repeatable operation rather than placing every block by hand.
Use a scripted brush for the first pass of a landscape, then refine the result with other Creative Mode tools. Because the brush is asset-defined, the exact set available depends on the assets installed in your build.
Paintbrush: shape, material and density control
The Paintbrush provides a more controlled way to draw forms. Its documented shape options include pyramids, cones and squares, with controls for:

- wall thickness;
- axis locking; and
- masks.
These controls let you choose between a solid mass, a more open or hollow form, and a constrained edit along selected axes. Masks are useful when an operation should affect only a defined portion of the target area. Axis locks help keep a shape aligned while you work from different camera angles.
Selection Tool: move complete pieces instead of rebuilding them
The Selection Tool handles three-dimensional selections and the operations that follow them. Documented functions include saving selections as prefabs, copying, pasting, moving, rotating, regenerating chunks and related selection operations.
- Make a three-dimensional selection around the terrain or structure you want to reuse.
- Save the selection as a prefab if you expect to place it again.
- Copy or paste the selection for a quick duplicate, or move and rotate it to fit a new location.
- Use regeneration only when you intend to rebuild the affected chunk and have preserved anything you may need to restore.
Prefab saving is the bridge between one-off building and repeatable world design. It is faster than reconstructing a ruin or terrain feature manually, while the Paintbrush remains better for changing the surrounding landform.
Balance speed and control when choosing a building method

In practice, a fast workflow is to establish the broad silhouette with a scripted brush, tune the shape and materials with the Paintbrush, save important structures as prefabs, and finish small details manually. That sequence keeps large edits efficient without sacrificing detail.
Edit biomes with the Node Editor
Biome editing is a technical authoring task rather than a normal building action. The official biome tutorial requires both operator access and Creative mode. If either condition is missing, the documented workflow will not be available.

Open the editor
- Enter Creative mode with operator permissions.
- Press B to open the in-game Content Creation menu.
- Choose the Node Editor.
- Navigate to the Biomes directory and open the biome asset you want to inspect or edit.
Each biome is largely self-contained and controls what appears within it. Base Heights are the stated exception, so do not assume every terrain-height behavior is defined inside the biome asset itself.
When a biome edit is the right tool
- Use the Node Editor when you need a reusable change to a biome definition.
- Use Creative Mode brushes when you only need to reshape a particular world or construction site.
- Keep a backup of the original asset or project state before changing nodes so you can compare results and restore a known-good version.
A biome asset by itself is not a visitable world. A world instance must point to a generator that uses the relevant definitions.
Connect generators and worlds through Instance.bson
The instance configuration determines what a world loads. The official tutorial describes an Instance.bson file that selects the generator and other world settings. Generation assets alone are not enough to enter a custom result; the instance must reference a provider and supply the required world information.
Fields and providers documented for instances

The exact serialization details belong to the instance schema used by your release. Preserve the field names exactly as documented by the version you are running; do not rename a provider or structure key because it looks more readable.
Test a custom structure without overwriting the basic instance
- Back up the working instance configuration.
- Duplicate the basic instance configuration used by the tutorial.
- Keep the generator and spawn settings consistent with the known-good copy.
- Change the
WorldStructurekey to the custom structure you want to test. - Load the duplicate instance and verify the generated result before replacing any default configuration.
Duplicating the basic instance isolates an experiment from the known-good setup. If the test fails, restore the original rather than trying to reconstruct it from memory.

World-generation templates and version checkpoints
Version labels matter because Hytale’s creator systems are changing quickly. The documentation currently identifies Release 0.7.2. Update 2 added preparation for WorldGen V2, the Default_Flat and Default_Void templates, armor-slot visibility controls and avatar color-name tooltips.
Those additions are checkpoints, not a promise that every menu looks identical in a later build. When a tutorial references a template or provider, compare its name with the entries exposed by your installed release. A missing template can mean the build has renamed, replaced or moved it rather than that the world-generation system is broken.

The Flat and Void providers are useful when you need a controlled environment for testing a structure or creator asset. A flat provider gives you a simple surface for placement; a void provider removes the normal terrain context. The documented Update 2 templates provide named defaults for these provider types, while the HytaleGenerator provider is the route for a generated world structure.
Use seeds deliberately
An optional SeedOverride on a HytaleGenerator instance is useful when comparing two edits against the same generated starting point. Without a fixed override, a change in the input or generation setup can be harder to distinguish from a different random result. Record the seed with the test instance so you can reproduce the comparison.
Common problems and fixes
The Avatar Creator does not show an option from a guide
Check the current release and patch notes first. Cosmetic categories are expanding during Early Access, and the July 2026 update described additional hand and eyelash detail rather than a permanently fixed catalog. Also confirm that you are looking at the current armor, color or cosmetic category; Update 2 placed armor visibility controls beside equipped slots and added color-name tooltips.
The Node Editor or biome directory is unavailable
Confirm that you are in Creative mode and have operator status. Those are explicit requirements of the official biome workflow. A normal player session will not provide the same technical authoring access.

A biome edit has no visible effect
Check the world instance. A biome asset is not independently visitable; the instance must point to a generator that uses the relevant world structure and settings. Verify the provider, the WorldStructure key and, when testing reproducibility, the optional SeedOverride.
A custom structure fails to load
Start from a duplicated basic instance rather than a blank file. Compare the provider and field names with the working configuration, then change only the WorldStructure key. Keep a backup before each experiment so a malformed edit does not destroy the known-good instance.
A regenerated chunk removes work
Regeneration is one of the Selection Tool’s documented operations. Save important selections as prefabs and preserve a backup before regenerating. Paste the prefab back only after confirming that the regenerated terrain is the result you want.
A practical end-to-end customization workflow
- Decide the scope: avatar appearance, an in-world build, a reusable biome asset, or a generator-backed world.
- Start with the least technical tool: Avatar Creator for appearance and Creative Mode for ordinary terrain and structures.
- Prototype large forms: use a scripted brush for a mountain, grassy path or procedural ruin, then tune it with Paintbrush controls.
- Capture reusable work: use the Selection Tool to save a finished section as a prefab before moving or rotating copies.
- Move to asset authoring only when needed: open the Node Editor with B from the Content Creation menu, then work in the Biomes directory.
- Prepare a safe instance test: duplicate the basic
Instance.bsonconfiguration, retain its working provider and spawn settings, and change theWorldStructurekey. - Make tests reproducible: use an optional
SeedOverridewhen comparing generator changes. - Validate against the installed release: check the Release 0.7.2 documentation label, Update 2 additions and later patch notes before diagnosing a missing option.
What the future creator economy means for customization
Hytale has described a future Mod Browser direction in which players may be able to support mods directly and receive official cosmetics, with a rewards ecosystem intended to help creators earn income. The same update says more details are forthcoming. This is a planned creator-support path, not a live affiliate program or a guaranteed payout system. Do not treat a current cosmetic or mod as proof that those rewards are already available.
