What you are setting up
All in One [Modded One Block] is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5. Its central progression is divided into 12 One Block phases. Minecraft 1.16.5 was released on January 14, 2021, so this is not a current-version server: do not install it with a newer Minecraft release or a different mod loader.

The project page lists pack release 1.5.4b as its latest listed release, while the server archive used for this setup is the separately published AllinOneServer-1.5.1.zip, uploaded May 3, 2022. That distinction matters. A client profile that automatically updates to a newer pack release may not match the 1.5.1 server files. Use a client installation that matches the server pack you actually deploy.
| Component | Requirement or value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game edition | Minecraft Java Edition | Bedrock clients cannot join this Forge Java server. |
| Minecraft version | 1.16.5 | Mods and Forge are version-specific. |
| Loader | Forge | The server archive includes a preinstalled Forge server. |
| Forge build in the archive | 36.2.34 | Keep this build with the supplied pack files. |
| Server archive | AllinOneServer-1.5.1.zip |
Use the server pack, not only a client profile. |
| Java guidance | Java 8 through Java 11, excluding Java 8.0.321 and Java 11.0.14 | This is the pack listing’s compatibility guidance; verify the exact runtime on the host. |
| Included launchers | start_4GB.bat and start_4GB.sh |
The Windows and Linux scripts request 4 GB; the Linux script is marked not tested. |
| Default remote port | 25565, unless your server.properties specifies another query port |
The router and firewall must allow the same port. |
The project page records 4,212,748 downloads, but that number says nothing about how many players a particular computer can run. No independent performance benchmark or tested player-capacity figure is published for this pack. Treat the included 4 GB script as a launch default, not a capacity guarantee.

Choose where the server will run
You can run the server on a home PC, a separate machine on your local network, or a rented virtual/private server. The software setup is essentially the same; the network work and maintenance burden differ.
| Decision area | Self-hosted PC or VPS | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| File and configuration control | Full access to Forge, scripts, configs, worlds, and backups. | Control-panel access varies; some files or startup options may be restricted. |
| Maintenance | You handle Java, Forge, pack changes, backups, firewall rules, and uptime. | The provider handles much of the machine and panel maintenance, while you still manage the world and mod compatibility. |
| Network access | A home server may require router port forwarding; a VPS still needs its firewall configured. | The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, so home-router work is usually avoided. |
| Cost pattern | Existing hardware and internet access can reduce recurring cost, but electricity and administration are yours. | A recurring hosting fee buys convenience; verify current pricing, location, limits, and support. |
| Pack compatibility | You can preserve the exact 1.16.5 Forge files yourself. | Confirm that the service supports this exact pack and version, rather than only generic Forge or newer modpacks. |
Self-hosting is the better fit when you want direct access to files and are comfortable administering Java, Forge, backups, and networking. A managed service is preferable when continuous availability and reduced machine maintenance are worth the recurring fee. Neither option removes the need for matching client files.
Prepare the host machine
Use a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only for this server, such as C:MinecraftAllInOneServer on Windows or ~/minecraft/all-in-one-server on Linux. Keeping the server separate from the client installation makes backups, permissions, and troubleshooting much easier. Do not extract the archive into your regular launcher or modpack profile folder.
Install and verify Java
Install a Java runtime supported by the pack listing and check the version from a terminal or command prompt:

java -version
For this pack, the stated range is Java 8 through Java 11, with Java 8.0.321 and Java 11.0.14 specifically excluded. If the command reports one of those excluded builds, install another supported build before diagnosing Forge or mod errors. If the command is not found, Java is either missing or not on the host’s PATH; use the full path to the Java executable in your custom launch command or correct the PATH setting.
Download and extract the correct server pack
- Open the All in One [Modded One Block] project on CurseForge and locate the server file named
AllinOneServer-1.5.1.zip. The listing identifies it as a Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge release uploaded May 3, 2022. - Download that server archive rather than assuming that the client profile contains a usable server.
- Extract every file into the dedicated server folder. The archive includes the Forge server, the pack’s
config, defaultconfigs, andkubejsdirectories, plus other override content. - Keep the supplied files together. Do not replace the Forge directory, copy configuration files from another Minecraft version, or merge this pack with a different loader.
If a hosting control panel asks you to upload a modpack, select the exact server-pack archive when supported. If the panel offers only a generic Forge installer, check that it can run Forge 36.2.34 on Minecraft 1.16.5 and lets you upload the archive’s override folders. A one-click “latest Forge” option is not an equivalent installation.
Start the server for the first time
Windows
- Open the server folder and run
start_4GB.bat. - Watch the console while Forge creates its files and prepares the world directory. The script’s 4 GB setting is simply the included startup default.
- If Windows blocks the script, use the file’s Properties dialog to unblock it, then run it again. Keep the console window open while the server is running.
Linux
- Open a terminal in the server folder.
- Make the supplied script executable with
chmod +x start_4GB.sh. - Run
./start_4GB.shand monitor the output.
The pack listing marks start_4GB.sh as “not tested.” If it fails, do not assume the pack is unusable: inspect the error, verify Java, and use the Forge server’s generated launch arguments in a manually created script. Preserve those Forge arguments when changing memory or the working directory.
Accept the Minecraft EULA
The first launch normally creates eula.txt and stops. Open that file, change eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start the server again. This records your acceptance of Minecraft’s EULA; it is not a setting that should be bypassed with a different file.

Configure server.properties
After the initial launch, open server.properties in a text editor. Change only the settings you understand, and stop the server before editing them.
motd: Set the name or welcome message players see in the multiplayer list.difficulty: Choose the desired difficulty for the world.gamemode: Set the default mode for new players.pvp: Enable or disable player-versus-player combat.max-players: Set a limit appropriate to the machine after observing real performance. No published benchmark establishes a safe number for this pack.query.port: Note this value for firewall and router configuration. Mojang’s help guidance says to forward the port listed inserver.properties; the usual default is 25565.server-ip: Leave this blank unless you have a specific binding requirement. Binding it to the wrong local address can stop outside or even local connections.
Save the file and restart the server so every change is loaded. Keep a copy of the original file before making extensive edits.

- Start the server and wait until the console reaches a stable running state rather than continuing to print startup errors.
- Launch the matching Minecraft Java 1.16.5 Forge client with the same pack files.
- On the same computer, connect to
localhost. If the server is on another computer on your home network, connect using that computer’s private LAN address. - Create or load the One Block world and verify that blocks, recipes, quests, and other pack features load correctly.
- Stop the server with the console command
stop; do not close the window or kill the process while the world is saving.
Solving Java, Forge, and mod-loading problems locally is faster than trying to debug them through a router. Do not configure public access until a local player can join reliably.
Allow friends to connect remotely
Open the host firewall
Create an inbound rule for the same TCP port shown in server.properties (25565 by default). On Windows, add an inbound rule in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security and allow the Java runtime or the chosen port. On Linux, add an equivalent rule in the firewall tool used by that distribution. If the server works on localhost but not from another device on the LAN, check the host firewall before changing the router.

Forward the router port
- Give the server computer a stable private LAN address, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Open the router’s Port Forwarding or NAT page.
- Forward the port listed as
query.portinserver.propertiesto the server computer’s private address. Mojang’s official help guide identifies 25565 as the default. - Use the same external and internal port unless you have a deliberate reason to translate them.
- Save the rule and restart the server if the router requires it.
Friends outside your home should use your public IP address (and the port if it is not the default). Give that address only to people you trust. Do not publish it in a public chat or expose unrelated router administration services.
When port forwarding is not possible
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT, and some providers block inbound connections. In that case, a normal port-forward rule will not make the server reachable. Options include asking the internet provider for a public IPv4 address, running the server on a VPS with its firewall configured, or using a managed Minecraft host. A VPN overlay can also connect a private group, but every player must install and configure the same networking tool.
Make every client match
Every player needs Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5, the same Forge build, the same mod files, and the same configuration. In practice, the safest approach is for everyone to install the client pack version intended to accompany the server archive, then compare the mods, config, and kubejs contents if connection errors occur.
- Do not let one player use a newer project release while the server runs 1.5.1 files.
- Do not add client-only or server-only mods casually; a missing or extra required mod can produce a “mismatched mod channel” or registry error.
- Do not copy a configuration from another Minecraft version.
- Back up the world before changing any mod, Forge build, datapack, or KubeJS script.
Backups and routine administration
Back up the world correctly
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and important server files to a separate disk or host, and then restart. A useful backup set includes the world folder, server.properties, config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, the mods directory, and the launch script. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine so a disk failure or accidental deletion does not remove every copy.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Change one thing at a time
Record the date and the exact file changed when updating a mod or configuration. Start the server, allow it to load completely, and test the world before making another change. If the change breaks startup, restore the previous file and the matching backup rather than repeatedly adding and removing mods on the live world.

Use the server console to grant operator privileges only to people who need them. Consider enabling a whitelist for a private friends’ server, and remove players who should no longer connect. Keep the operating system, Java runtime, and router administration account protected with strong credentials. Never share RCON or panel credentials with ordinary players.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The window closes immediately
- Run the script from a command prompt so the error remains visible.
- Check
java -versionand replace excluded Java 8.0.321 or Java 11.0.14 builds. - Confirm that you accepted the EULA and that
eula.txtis in the server folder. - Make sure the script’s working directory is the folder containing the Forge server files.
Forge starts but reports missing or mismatched mods
- Verify that the server is running Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge 36.2.34 from the supplied archive.
- Re-extract
config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, and the mod files from the same server pack. - Compare the client’s mod list and versions with the server’s list.
- Remove only a mod you can identify as optional; deleting an unknown dependency can make the error worse.
Local connection works, but friends cannot join
- Confirm the server is running and that the host can still join with
localhost. - Check the host firewall rule and the router’s forwarding destination.
- Verify that the forwarded port exactly matches
query.port. - Ask a friend outside your home network to test; testing your own public address from inside the LAN can fail on routers without hairpin NAT.
- Check whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound ports.
The world stops loading after a change
Stop the server, restore the last known-good mod and configuration files, and restore the most recent world backup if necessary. Do not continue launching the only copy of a world with a removed or downgraded content mod; that can permanently remove blocks or entities.
Self-hosting versus a managed server: a practical choice
Choose a self-hosted PC or VPS when you need complete access to scripts and files, already have suitable hardware or a server, and can handle Java, Forge, backups, firewall rules, and occasional downtime. Choose managed hosting when you prefer a control panel, a provider-managed public endpoint, and less machine maintenance. Before paying, verify that the provider explicitly supports Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge 36.2.34, custom server-pack uploads, scheduled backups, and the memory allocation you need. “Forge support” alone does not prove compatibility with this pack.
Whichever route you choose, the operational responsibilities remain: keep clients aligned, back up the world before changes, and preserve the exact server-pack files. The official Minecraft server software itself is free to download, but electricity, VPS resources, or managed hosting are separate costs.

Final setup checklist
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5 is selected.
- A supported Java 8–11 runtime is installed, excluding Java 8.0.321 and Java 11.0.14.
AllinOneServer-1.5.1.zipis extracted into a dedicated folder.- Forge server 36.2.34 and the supplied override directories remain together.
- The first launch created
eula.txt, andeula=truewas saved. server.propertieshas the desired gameplay settings, withserver-ipleft blank unless specifically required.- A matching client joined locally before public networking was attempted.
- The host firewall and router forward the port listed in
query.port(25565 by default). - Every player uses the same Minecraft, Forge, mod, and configuration versions.
- A clean world backup exists before updates or configuration changes.
The bottom line
The reliable path is to treat All in One [Modded One Block] as the specific 1.16.5 Forge server it is: download its dedicated server archive, run the included launcher with a supported Java runtime, accept the EULA, test locally, and only then configure firewall and router access. Self-hosting gives maximum control; managed hosting reduces infrastructure work. In both cases, exact file and version matching—not the choice of host alone—is what determines whether friends can join successfully.
