“Hydration failed” and STATUS_DELETE_PENDING During a Windows Update: What the Logs Mean

Windows CBS logs may show “Hydration failed” alongside STATUS_DELETE_PENDING, but the pair does not establish a cause. Learn what to capture for diagnosis.

“Hydration failed” and STATUS_DELETE_PENDING can appear together in Windows update servicing logs, but their proximity does not prove that one caused the other. The messages point to activity recorded by Windows component servicing; they do not, by themselves, identify a universal cause or confirmed fix. To diagnose a specific failed update, capture the Windows build, KB number, and complete CBS log entries around the first hydration error.

What these Windows update errors mean

Windows records component servicing activity in CBS/CSI logs. In those logs, “Hydration failed” indicates that CSI reported it could not hydrate a component file while processing an update. The surrounding entries matter: one reported case included an invalid-data error during delta processing, hydration failures, and a missing matching component binary.

STATUS_DELETE_PENDING is a status observed during the servicing operation. It appears in reported logs alongside hydration errors, including for a file under a temporary WinSxS InFlight directory. That co-occurrence does not establish that the pending deletion caused the hydration failure or the overall update failure.

Why the exact log context matters

The same phrases have appeared in user-submitted reports involving different KB updates and components. A report about KB5016616 described a Windows Defender Offline component, a missing matching binary, and an ERROR_INVALID_DATA servicing failure. Reports about KB5032189 and KB5035845 also contain hydration-related messages and STATUS_DELETE_PENDING. These historical cases are examples, not proof of a single cause or of current Windows Update behavior.

#1 Best Overall

For the original reports, see Microsoft Q&A on KB5016616 and error 0x8007000d, Microsoft Q&A on KB5032189, and Microsoft Q&A on KB5035845. They are individual support reports, not prevalence data or official explanations of the paired messages.

What to collect before troubleshooting

  1. Record the affected system. Note the Windows edition, version, and build, along with the exact KB number that failed.
  2. Locate the first hydration failure in CBS.log. Preserve the complete nearby section before and after it, rather than only copying the single error line.
  3. Include the identifying details. Keep the component name and version, any HRESULT or NTSTATUS codes, and whether Windows reports the update as pending or failed.
  4. Record what happened after a restart. Note whether the same component error recurs, the update remains pending, or a later/superseding update changes the outcome.

This context can help distinguish a component payload or delta-processing error from a cleanup status that happens to appear nearby. It does not prove a cause on its own, but it makes a machine-specific diagnosis more useful.

What not to infer or do

  • Do not treat the status as the root cause. The logs establish that the messages can occur in the same sequence, not that STATUS_DELETE_PENDING caused hydration to fail.
  • Do not assume one fix applies to every case. The reports involve different updates and components, and the error phrase alone does not identify a universal remedy.
  • Do not manually delete WinSxS or InFlight files. The cited reports do not establish manual deletion as safe or effective.

The cited reports do not validate a particular repair command or reset procedure. If you pursue repair steps, use Microsoft guidance for your specific Windows release and error code rather than treating these log examples as confirmation that a generic procedure will work.
