Microsoft says its service fix finished rolling out on September 25, 2026. Close all open Office apps, reopen Word, and try again. If you were saving somewhere else—or the problem continues—check the destination selected in Word’s save dialog; a wrong-folder result does not necessarily mean you hit this bug.
Does your PDF save match Microsoft’s documented bug?
The reported issue had a specific set of conditions: Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, version 2609 (16.0.20430.x), saving as a PDF through Save or Save As, with SharePoint Online selected as the destination. Microsoft says Word could show no error while placing the PDF instead in C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCacheContent.MSO under a random filename. See Microsoft’s notice about the SharePoint PDF issue.

If you were saving to a local folder or OneDrive, or using Word for the web or Mac, the notice does not establish that this bug is the cause. Word may open a cloud-focused save experience, and Microsoft says signed-in files may default to OneDrive. Check the selected location for that save rather than assuming Word will use the source document’s folder.
Fix the SharePoint PDF issue
- Close every open Office app. Close Word and any other open Office applications.
- Reopen Word and retry the save. Microsoft says its service change was fully rolled out on September 25, 2026, and instructs users with remaining cases to restart Office apps so the fix is picked up.
- Verify the saved file in SharePoint. If the retry still puts the PDF elsewhere, use the destination-selection steps below and confirm the location shown before saving.
Microsoft’s fix applies to the documented SharePoint case; it is not evidence that every unexpected PDF destination has the same cause.
#1 Best Overall
Choose and verify a destination for a Word PDF
Word desktop on Windows
- For an existing document, select File > Save a Copy. For an unsaved document, select File > Save As or Save a Copy.
- Select Browse, then navigate to the folder where the PDF should go.
- Select PDF as the file type, and check the destination shown in the dialog before selecting Save.
Using Browse makes the location explicit for that save. A default-folder preference does not guarantee that every export route will use the document’s current folder.
Word for the web and Word for Mac
The steps differ by platform. Microsoft’s PDF guidance describes Word for the web as File > Print > Save as PDF, followed by choosing a location. For Word for Mac, it describes using Save As or Save a Copy and choosing PDF format. Check the location in the flow you are using; Windows menu paths do not apply universally. See Microsoft’s instructions for saving or converting Office files to PDF.

Change Word’s default save location
If Word repeatedly opens at an unwanted location, you can configure a default, but distinguish a recent cloud location from Word’s local working folder.
Set a recent folder as the default
In Word’s save experience, use the location dropdown to set a recent folder as the default. The available choices depend on the save experience and locations available to your account.
Rank #3
Set Word’s default local file location
- In Word, select File > Options > Save.
- Enter or browse to the intended path in Default local file location.
- Save the change. This working-folder setting is for Word, not every Office app or every save/export route.
Microsoft also documents a way to show the classic save dialog: in File > Options > Save, select Don’t show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts. Its save guidance says F12 opens Save As. Even with a default configured, check the destination shown for each PDF save. See Microsoft’s guidance on customizing the Office save experience.

If you still cannot find the PDF
- Return to the save dialog and confirm the selected folder and file type before saving again.
- If your case matches the SharePoint incident, close all Office apps and reopen Word before retrying.
- If you used a local or OneDrive destination, treat it as a separate default-location or dialog issue unless the same SharePoint-specific conditions apply.
