Steam currently displays TBD MB RAM and TBD MB storage in the recommended-requirements area. That means there is no authoritative recommended CPU, GPU, memory capacity, storage figure, or FPS target to quote. A computer that exceeds the minimums may still show hitches if another process consumes memory or if a platform-specific game bug is involved.

Windows baseline
The Windows minimum combines hardware that is now old with a 64-bit operating system requirement. Meeting the Core i5-750 or Phenom II X4 965 class of CPU and the GT 630 or Radeon HD 6670 class of GPU establishes only that the machine is in the listed compatibility range. It does not establish that every scene will hold a chosen FPS, that modern integrated graphics will behave identically to those named cards, or that background applications will leave enough memory available.

macOS baseline
For macOS, the published minimum is macOS 11 Big Sur or later with either an Apple M1 or an Intel Core M processor. The memory information needs care: the main field states 2 GB RAM, while the graphics field displays 4 GB RAM. Treat 2 GB as the explicit minimum and regard the 4 GB entry as a separate value shown by the listing rather than silently converting it into a new official requirement. No Apple GPU or Intel GPU model is named.
Linux and SteamOS baseline
The Linux section names Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 18.04, or CentOS 7, an x64 architecture with SSE2, and 2 GB RAM. It explicitly says integrated graphics should be enough. That is useful for older laptops and many handheld configurations, but it is not a measured FPS guarantee. Driver quality, compositor behavior, translation layers, thermals, and memory pressure can still change the experience.
Storage headroom
The listed 500 MB is the game’s stated storage minimum. Keep additional free space for Steam’s download, unpacking, updates, shader or texture data, and the operating system. The listing does not publish a separate space requirement for updates, so no larger official number can be substituted.
Will Hungry Horrors run on Steam Deck or integrated graphics?
Steam Deck
The Linux requirements and the statement that integrated graphics should be enough make Steam Deck a plausible configuration, but the listing does not promise a Deck frame rate or a particular graphics preset. A Deck owner should use the Linux troubleshooting path: keep the game and Steam current, reproduce the issue after an update, and note whether it is a short hitch, sustained low FPS, a long-session freeze, or a crash.

Patch 0.3.3 documented a Steam Deck/Linux problem in which the game could freeze after one to two hours because textures failed to load. That patch added texture caching and its notes describe a small performance boost as well. If a Deck freezes only after extended play, first confirm that the installed build contains the 0.3.3 fix or a later build. If the freeze remains, report the duration, location, save, game version or branch, and whether restarting temporarily clears it.
Hotfix 0.3.4 disabled game analytics on Linux because analytics were causing crashes. Therefore, a Linux or Deck crash should begin with an update check rather than a graphics-hardware purchase. A current build may already contain both the texture-caching and analytics changes.
Integrated graphics on laptops and desktops
The Linux listing is the only platform entry that explicitly says integrated graphics should be enough. Windows and macOS name different hardware conditions, so do not treat that Linux sentence as a universal promise for every integrated GPU on every operating system. If an integrated-GPU system meets the operating-system, CPU, RAM, and storage entries, test with reduced visual settings when available and watch memory use while the hitch occurs.

Identify the symptom before changing anything

Steam Support recommends first testing whether the computer itself is the source of a performance problem before reporting it. Record the operating system, GPU, RAM, game branch or version, and the exact symptom. This turns a vague report such as “it lags” into information that can distinguish a resource limit from a reproducible game defect.

Fixes in the safest order
- Check the platform minimums. Confirm the operating system, processor architecture, RAM, graphics hardware where specified, DirectX 11 on Windows, and available storage. A machine below a listed minimum is not a good candidate for a reliable performance expectation.
- Leave more than the stated storage minimum free. The listing says 500 MB, but updates and temporary files need working room. Do not interpret exactly 500 MB free as comfortable headroom.
- Update Hungry Horrors and Steam. The official notes document fixes for texture-loading freezes, Linux analytics crashes, and a sewer-cooking crash. Updating is reversible and addresses known software causes before any hardware change.
- Reproduce the issue with background load reduced. Close browsers, launchers, recording tools, overlays, and other memory-heavy applications. Test the same save and location so that the comparison is meaningful.
- Check RAM while the hitch occurs. Steam Support explains that when system memory is low, a game or Steam can be swapped to disk, producing repeated frame-rate hitches. Note whether RAM usage rises near the system limit at the same time as the stutter.
- Lower available visual settings. Reduce resolution or quality options one change at a time, especially on a machine that only meets the minimum. The sources do not publish a universal preset or a guaranteed FPS improvement, so judge the result on the affected computer.
- Test again and document the result. State which change helped, by how much subjectively, and whether the problem is repeatable. If nothing changes, preserve the exact trigger and version information for a useful report.
Why low memory causes stutter
A low-RAM system can appear to meet the 4 GB Windows or 2 GB Linux/macOS minimum and still hitch in normal use. The minimum describes the game’s listed baseline, not the memory consumed by the operating system, a browser, a launcher, recording software, or an overlay. When available memory runs short, Steam Support says that the game or Steam may be swapped to disk. Disk-backed swapping is much slower than keeping active data in RAM, so the result is often a repeating hitch rather than a permanently low frame rate.
Practical RAM check
- Start the game with browsers, chat clients, launchers, cloud-sync tools, and recording software closed.
- Open the operating system’s task or activity monitor and watch total memory, not just the game’s own process.
- Play until the hitch appears and note whether memory pressure rises at that moment.
- Repeat once with the largest background application closed. If the hitch disappears, background memory pressure is a stronger lead than the GPU.
When a RAM upgrade is reasonable
Consider a desktop RAM upgrade kit only when the computer is near the game’s minimum and measurements show sustained memory pressure after unnecessary applications are closed. Match the kit to the system’s DDR generation, capacity limits, channel configuration, and physical form factor. A random kit cannot be assumed compatible, and additional RAM will not repair a reproducible game crash or a graphics-driver fault by itself.
Fixes for known crash and freeze triggers
Steam Deck/Linux freeze after one to two hours
Patch 0.3.3 attributes this long-session freeze to textures failing to load and adds texture caching. Update to a build containing that patch or a later build, then repeat a session long enough to test the original timing. If the freeze persists, record whether it happens at one to two hours again, whether changing locations affects it, and whether a restart only postpones the problem.

Linux analytics crash
Hotfix 0.3.4 says analytics were disabled for Linux because they caused crashes. On Linux or Steam Deck, update before changing graphics settings, drivers, or hardware. Include the distribution, desktop or Deck mode, game branch, and exact crash trigger in any report.

Cooking multiple times in the sewer
Patch 0.4.9 says cooking multiple times in the sewer no longer crashes the game. If that exact action reliably causes a crash, install a build containing 0.4.9 or later and test the same sequence. Do not infer that a different crash has the same cause; describe its own trigger separately.
Crashes without a documented trigger
For an unrelated or intermittent crash, update first, then test with background applications closed. Record whether it occurs on launch, during loading, in a particular room, after a specific action, or only after a long session. Include the operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, game version or branch, and whether another save reproduces it. This evidence is more useful than claiming that a RAM or GPU replacement is a proven fix.

Settings changes
If the game exposes resolution, texture, shadow, or effect controls, lower one setting at a time and retest the same scene. Resolution changes generally alter the amount of work sent to the GPU, while texture changes can affect memory use, but the available sources do not establish which Hungry Horrors setting is most demanding. Avoid promising a specific FPS result; no authoritative average-FPS, 1% low, frame-time, or benchmark table is published.

On a system close to the Windows minimum, use the lowest practical visual settings, close memory-heavy software, and avoid running recording or overlay tools during diagnosis. On Linux or Steam Deck, keep the texture-caching fix in place before judging performance. If lowering settings does not change sustained low FPS, the limiting factor may be CPU, driver, thermals, or a game-side issue rather than image quality alone.

Do not confuse low FPS with stutter
Sustained low FPS is continuously slow. Stutter is a short hitch or a sequence of hitches, often associated with memory pressure or loading. A setting reduction may improve sustained GPU load but leave RAM-related hitches untouched. Test each symptom independently and report both if they occur together.
Platform-specific checklists
Windows
- Verify 64-bit Windows 10 or a later compatible Windows installation, the processor class, 4 GB RAM minimum, and a listed 2 GB graphics card or better equivalent.
- Confirm DirectX 11 support and more than 500 MB of free storage.
- Update the game and Steam, close background applications, then observe RAM usage during the hitch.
- Use lower visual settings if the machine is near minimum and record whether the symptom is stutter, low FPS, freeze, or crash.
macOS
- Verify macOS 11 Big Sur or later and an Apple M1 or Intel Core M processor.
- Remember that the listing states 2 GB RAM in one field and shows 4 GB RAM in the graphics field; report the installed memory rather than assuming which entry reflects your case.
- Update the game and Steam, close memory-heavy applications, and test again.
- Because no separate GPU model or FPS target is published, document the Mac model and operating-system version when reporting a problem.
Linux and Steam Deck
- Check the listed Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 18.04, or CentOS 7 baseline, x64 architecture with SSE2, 2 GB RAM, and available storage.
- Prioritize a game update containing the 0.3.3 texture-caching fix and 0.3.4 Linux analytics fix.
- If the sewer-cooking trigger is involved, update to a build containing 0.4.9.
- Close background software, observe memory pressure, and test again before changing hardware.
When hardware is—and is not—the answer
Hardware becomes a reasonable suspect when the computer is below a published minimum, RAM remains exhausted with background programs closed, or lowering visual settings produces a clear improvement that points to graphics workload. Even then, match any upgrade to the system and verify compatibility first.
Hardware is not an established fix for a known software trigger. A Linux analytics crash, the pre-0.3.3 texture-loading freeze, and the sewer-cooking crash each have documented software fixes. Replacing a GPU or adding RAM before updating can add cost without addressing the cause. Likewise, there is no published recommended GPU, CPU, or FPS target against which to judge a purchase.
How to report a problem that remains
- Write down the platform and operating-system version.
- List the CPU, GPU, installed RAM, and approximate free storage.
- State the Hungry Horrors branch or version and Steam version if known.
- Classify the symptom as a short hitch, sustained low FPS, freeze, or crash.
- Describe the exact trigger, location, elapsed play time, and whether it reproduces.
- List the changes already tested: updates, closed applications, visual settings, and any RAM-pressure observation.
A report with those details helps separate a minimum-spec limitation, a memory-swapping hitch, and a repeatable game bug. It also prevents a long-session Linux freeze from being confused with a launch crash or a sewer-cooking crash.
